Boy!!! Dumb thumbs today
Went to the field today, got so excited NO WIND!!! Seemed like everything I wanted to do looked like I was flying on Mode 1. Start a maneuver that needs full throttle, what do I do reduce the throttle. Start a roll and half-way through cut the throttle. What I could do wrong I did. The sad thing is I did it with two planes. Guess I can't blame the planes. Made my landings kinda OK, said this is it for today. Packed up and went home. Anybody ever have a day like this. Glad I was by myself. Now I can tell the guys how great the flight was with no wind. You can keep a secret can't you?

RE: Boy!!! Dumb thumbs today
I have seen others that do not pack until they totalize their planes, you were smart, I bet that there will be more good weathered days in the future, and you still have your planes to enjoy.

RE: Boy!!! Dumb thumbs today
Could not believe how lousy I was today. I must have, had my brain someplace else. Our field is surrounded by 10' + ft of corn on three sides and a line of trees behind the flight line. Like landing on a postage stamp. I guess I was watching the corn on my landings because I sure was coming high and hot. The landing area is great, grass and very smooth and short grass.

Everybody has days like that. They're good things. Complacency kills models.
What I like to do when I'm not feeling very in tune with what I'm doing is to just slow down and work on the basics. Making lazy figure eights. Simple things like that where I don't have to think, but the practice is still good to have. I'll also just hang around and enjoy the day. Often times it helps to have a specific goal for a flight, where you'll work on one specific thing. Many people recommend that for every flight, as opposed to just boring holes in the sky. The real advantage in it is that you can think through what you'll be doing before you do it. I think that helps to build reflexes and muscle memory. |

I think everyone has a day like that once in a while...I may not pack up and go home....but I am done flyin for the day

RE: Boy!!! Dumb thumbs today
I was the only one thereand I probably would have gone up again if I stayed. So I left. Maybe I will go out this evening when some others are there.

RE: Boy!!! Dumb thumbs today
Mornin' Irish. "I feel your pain". A couple weeks ago, I went out early in the AM. I was headed to work but had to drop off my trainer for our annual FAA Careers in Aviation Day at the field. 34 kids ranging from 9 to 17 years old, gifted kids, that have aspirations for engineering or aviation or both. Anyway, I wanted to make sure all was right befor I turned it over to the one of the club AMA instructors. So, I fueled it up, check everything, and put it in the air.
Shortly thereafter, it fell out of the sky. I was on channel 48, which has been a bit troublesome at times at our field for some reason, and lost everything but the throttle when I was going from right to left after take off and initial turn. When I hit mid field, things started to happen, and by the time I was to the left, all I had was throttle. So, I watched it go in. Painful. This was the only 'real' trainer that was going out that day, so it was painful to both me and for the kids. But, the club managed with a Tiger II I believe, and another low-wing aircraft that was easy to control.. and of course, on the buddy box for the kids. So, things happen. In my case, I gotta say that most of my crashes, (not that many.. but it sounds bad) have happened in the early morning, and on the first flight, with the exception of my Venus 40 pattern trainer. I did that in on the 5th or so flight. Aaaanyway, cheer up. Think of that cup of Starbucks Komoto Dragon, a nice plate of pancakes, butter, maple syrup, and a couple of over-easy eggs and some nice Virginia Ham to go with it. Yum.. jeech.. is it breakfast time yet? Dick. |
RE: Boy!!! Dumb thumbs today
Gosh!!! I just ate and now you are making me hungry again. I didn't hurt anything yesterday other than landing on the front wheel. I guess I did a reverse "wheelie" Will try again this morning. Again no wind this morning. But suppose to be windy in the afternoon. Rain tomorrow and probably the rest of the week. Gee, that ham sounded good. I had poached eggs, thick sliced bacon and whole wheat toast.

RE: Boy!!! Dumb thumbs today
I got brave and went out again this morning. Seems like it was back to normal.. Greased the landings and executed the maneuvers OK this time. Sure had me worried the other day, thought I was going backwards in my flying.

From the sounds of all that food you are eating, I'd think you guys had your cholesterol and blood pressure so High the planes couldn't keep up !!! :) ENJOY !!! RED

RE: Boy!!! Dumb thumbs today
Hey Bruce I got that too. It only affects me when I move or stay still.

RE: Boy!!! Dumb thumbs today
Buy a simulator and practice at home. This will help prevent mistakes at the field.
Best Regards, Flak |
RE: Boy!!! Dumb thumbs today
I don't think he needs a sim.. like some of us, he would be better off if we could reverse the clock by about 30 or so years.
Hey Irish.. You awake yet? BP 117/78 Cholesterol: 177 Not bad for 62, and somewhat oversized.. oops.. :D Thus the egg-white omlets! My only cheat is the english muffin, which, incidentally, is what's on for this morning. Care to join me? If you read my post on the Alpha Trainer, well, I can fully understand after crunching in my Super Star trainer. But, with that, I never even made it past the first orbit!!! Ouch [:@] I noticed that the fuselage has guide tubes for the rear linkage. That's a plus because I like using Sullivan Goldenrods rather than wood dowels. The OS .46 SF looks just fine. It was on my Goldberg Wildstick 40... which has seen better days. It has been stepped on, dropped, and had it's share of rough landings. And, in spite of numerous attempts to secure the covering with an iron, CA, whatever, it has lost most of it's trim and really looks ragged... I know.. a few hours with new covering would do wonders.. I had been using Sullivan Flex Mounts.. one side was bent!! I didn't even realize that. It was bent so badly that the engine was actually tilted to the lower right!! And it flew 'fine'. I had been using for fun fly events, though, and it was a real fun flyer. But, since it was stepped on (not by me, by the way), the stab is not what it used to be.. my re-build skills are not that great. So, it's time to retire it, so I removed everything from it and will put it in the 'to be sold at the next club 'flea market' shelf. Aaaanyway.. time for breakfast. Dick. |
RE: Boy!!! Dumb thumbs today
Hey CG==Look at them numbers they are great. But you are just a youngster. Yea I am ready to join you. Having a poached egg this morning with 9 grain toast and real "Allen County Pure Sorgum" made the old fashion way: horse powered mill and wood furnace, Scottsvill KY. How's that for an education this morning. Again no wind today so I will probably run out to the field, well maybe drive.
Flak: I have FSOne and when I want to work on a particular maneuver I practice it first on the sim. Boy have I saved lots of planes. |
RE: Boy!!! Dumb thumbs today
:D
I will be down in Florida again next week.. more ADS-B work.. flight tests, flying down in an old Convair 580, escorted by a new Bombardier Global 5000. Jeech.. why can't I fly in the Global!!! ha.. And, next month, I'm headed back to England for more FAA testing activities. THEN, when I get back, the following week, Julie and I are taking off back across the great salt pond, to Salzburg, Austria for a week visit with her brother. Uh-oh.. lots of good coffee and pastries in Salzburg!!! Oh yeah, some pretty good beer too!!! :D BUT, I'll watch those numbers!!! [:o] ;) Never a dull moment! |
RE: Boy!!! Dumb thumbs today
I like the CV-580. Airline I used to be with had them and I got to drive one once from BPT to DFW. FUN!!! :) Helps to be buddies with airline chief pilot and director of ops.:D Didn't do T.O. or Ldg though, got to know your limits. Flight attendants would have probably snitched us out anyway. I was supposed to be just in the jumpseat.[X(]
