setting flaps on dx7
 

ive completed my hangar 9 ultra stick 40 with the quad flap feature installed im useing a dx7 radio and a ar7000 receiver with ds821 servos. this is my first time useing flaps and i would like to set it up kinda basic first, i would like to set it up on a 3 position switch (the long toggle switch in the middle on the top left of my radio) setting it up like this: position (1) for takeoff position (2) for flying and position (3) for landing. im not at all familiar with how to set this up ! could someone help me or tell me where i can get this info ? my owners manual leaves alot to be desired on how to do this for a newbie! if you like you can pm me and maybe it wont take up so much room on here! thanks in advance!

Joco1: Not familiar with QUAD flaps? Anyhow this is the way I set up my flaps on my AT-6. Go to function (flap system). This enables you to set % of throw for each normal, mid, land. I like normal 0%, mid 55%, land 125%. While on that screen set auto 10%. That determines at what point flaps will deploy from throttle position and with the 3 position switch flipped. Now to set the elev. mix you will have to make a test flight to determine what degree of elev. up or dn you may need. Some planes require up, others dn. Naturally do the test flight at good altitude. These adjustments will require a bit of testing to get things as you want them. I also mix some rudder in with ailerons when flaps are used on landing. At low landing speeds ailerons lose effectiveness so rudder helps. This is called the auto land feature that enables flaps to be controlled thru throttle position. pg.54. Generally I use this same set up when using flaperons. good luck and good flying.

thanks, tedmo for the info! i havnt flown this plane l yet, and ive never flown with flaps at all, i was wondering can i put some gorilla tape on the flaps and tape them to the ailerons and fly the plane without the flaps and break it in a little or is there a better method of flying and holding the flaps in place until im ready to hook them up?

JOCO1: As I previosly said I'm not familiar with what is quad flaps so don't know what is correct to suggest. Seems to me though for any type of flaps to deploy a switch would have to be switched on? Therefore, just fly in normal manner without deploying flaps untill you wish to try them. Perhaps you can explain to me what quad flaps are and why this cannot be done?

im not saying it cant be done .........im just saying i dont know how!!!!!! i just want to fly the plane since i finally finished it up, i was just wanting to fly it without the flaps hooked up and get it tuned and trimmed! and eventually figure out my dx 7 to set the flaps properly!

if you look up hangar 9 ultra stick 40 arf you can see it has to types of build, one with just ailerons and the other with half flaps half ailerons thats what they are calling quad flaps.

JoCo1: I looked it up on Hanger 9 web pg. but didn't actually find an explanation of the quad flaps. Perhaps there is more info there but didn't bother to look for everything. No problem there. I interpret quad flaps as possibly cutting the ailerons into 2 separete sections but don't really matter for me to understand. However, my next question would be for someone not ever having used flaps why not go with flaperons? No need to have separete flap servos for that. Hey not trying to argue about this just want to be helpfull if I can.
Your decision not mine. Most important thing is for all of us to have fun and learn what we can when we can.
By the way this Stik design has been in existance for many many years with several slight variations by several manufactuers. I had my first one about 30 years ago and have just this week ordered one from Great Planes. An electric version. They have always been great fun planes.

The US40 ARF comes with two sets of ailerons. One set is full span for conventional ailerons. You could use that with the flaperon feature on the DX7 to get ailerons and flaps. Or you can install the quad flap option and utilize more complex programming to get features such as crow.

Since you've built this with the 4 flap option, do you have 4 servos in the wing? You can fly it just fine by leaving the servos to the inboard flaps unplugged and stationary. Just fly with the outboard ailerons operating as normal.

FWIW, you can fly the US40 with the quad-flap arrangement with a 7 channel radio and receiver but you might be lacking some mixes to get it to do everything it's capable of.
