Help Me Pick My Next Plane: Intermediate 60 size
I've been flying my Hobbico TOWER™ Trainer™ 40 MkII RTF for the last couple of months. I picked it up cheap. Wing had a couple of tears in it rudder and stabilizer had to be replaced and fixed but she flies great. It's been a lot of fun. Anyway I'm kind of getting ready to retire her and move on to something a little more advanced I also want to move onto a little bigger plane like a 60 size. Can you guys make some recommendations on an intermediate plane 60 size? I don't want to put it together either an ARF would be about the most patience I have to put these kits together.

Pulse XT .60.
Wonderful second plane. You'll never tire of it! |
RE: Help Me Pick My Next Plane: Intermediate 60 size
Sig Four Star 60. Match it up with a .91 Four Stroke engine, swing an APC 14x6 prop and you'll thank me later. :D

I'd have to agree with millertym2000. The Tiger2 in the 60 size is almost a PERFECT plane! It's definitely a "sport" aircraft (these are actually used in precision patern flying as well as being acrobatic as heck! This is NOT a 3D plane, but it SURE does mimic one pretty darned well!). It's got a wing loading of 20.2!!!! That's RIGHT at the upper edge for a trainer! so it can be a VERY gentle plane to fly and it won't do anything "weird" like stall when you're going too slow for a turn, it'll just sail through it! A trainer typically has a wingloading of 17 to 20 and this is only 0.2 higher! That's REMARKABLE for a sport/aero plane and the ONLY plane I've ever seen with such incredibly LOW loading (trainers = 17-20; sport 21-25; warbird = 25-34;( to get the wing load -measured in oz/sq ft- just convert the weight to oz by multiplying the weight (lbs) by 16 (1 lb=16oz) and then take the wing area and divide by 144 (1 sq. ft. = 144 sq.inches). This makes it GREAT for "Sunday flying" just taking your time, conver
Read this article on it. This article REALLY sings it's praises but doesn't skip over any rough spots it might have: http://www.masportaviator.com/ah.asp?ID=174&Index=0 If you want to see it and get more information , just type "Tiger 60" into the "Search" at the top rt hand portion of the "home" screen. It's absolutely an incredible plane and Goldberg planes last a LONG LONG TIME! (I've got a Goldberg Senior Falcon from 1977-78 (it's my icon!) !!!! Goldberg ALWAYS makes a good, quality product that you'll get MORE than your money's worth out of - you CERTAINLY won't find ANYTHING NEAR this caliber for only $180!!! http://www.rcplanet.com/SearchResult...earch=Tiger+60 The 1st chance I get, I'm getting a Tiger2 .40 (although the .60 model IS incredibly tempting :D ) Just read the article and you'll have all the info you need. Don't count this one out! Goldberg has been around a LONG time and there's a reason: they make darned good planes that people thoroughly enjoy and are ALWAYS high quality in material, fitment, and value. You will NOT regret this plane. And if you do, PM ME and I'll be glad to talk about taking it off your hands :D |

If you don't mind putting a kit togethere. The Top Flite Contender is just a dream to fly. Tough, easy to build, and if you want to get crazy it is up for anything. It also has a HUGE cenetr flap that makes things fun. I built mine in about a month. Or if you want a little more pattern action SIG KING KOBRA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The best 60 size plane I have ever flown. It a blast to build lands like no other plane I have ever flown. Check out my gallery for the picture of the KING. I hope you go for a kit. It truly is a great experiance

Tiger 60 ARF..... All the way! Love it!

RE: Help Me Pick My Next Plane: Intermediate 60 size
I also have to vote for the Tiger 60. It is one of my "Top 10 Airplanes of All Time" and it's #1 in the Intermediate Group.

Four Star .60 or a Tiger .60

RE: Help Me Pick My Next Plane: Intermediate 60 size
I'm a huge fan of Goldberg airframes and the Tiger in particular. I'd certainly second the suggestion for a Tiger .60 ARF.
Just to throw another very good option into the mix, you might consider the Kyosho Calmato Sport .60 ARF. It's very reasonably priced at $159.99, and to say it resembles the Tiger .60 would be kind. http://www.kyoshoamerica.com/airplan...part_num=11216 Our friends at the AMA Sport Aviator website recently posted a nice, thorough review: http://www.masportaviator.com/ah.asp?CatID=1&ID=212 The Tiger .60 ARF is a classic airframe well worth considering, and the Kyosho Calmato Sport .60 ARF is an homage/copy/knockoff of the Tiger .60 that is well worth considering also. http://www.kyoshoamerica.com/picture...1216/11216.jpg |
RE: Help Me Pick My Next Plane: Intermediate 60 size
Four Star 60, don't want you flying any ugly plane like that Tiger. :D OK, truth is these are two of the better flying second planes. That Tiger is kinda ugly though!!!
|
RE: Help Me Pick My Next Plane: Intermediate 60 size
Uglier than the 4*???
I didn't think that was possible |
RE: Help Me Pick My Next Plane: Intermediate 60 size
The 4 Star is so ugly I wouldn't fly one if ya gave it to me!
Including the engine! |
RE: Help Me Pick My Next Plane: Intermediate 60 size
I guess ugly is in the eye of the beholder. I think the Four Star looks better than the Tiger, but others like the Tiger's looks better.
|
RE: Help Me Pick My Next Plane: Intermediate 60 size
You can't go wrong with the Four Star .60.
I prefer it with the OS .91FX swinging an APC 13x8. Standard servos will work fine. |
RE: Help Me Pick My Next Plane: Intermediate 60 size
I luv the way my 4* 40 looks. When I build a the 60 size 4* I'm going to round all the conners and add some wing tips and then it will be perfect. The tiger might make a better second plane because it's a trigear, taildraggers can be a little more tricker to take off.Hope this helps.

RE: Help Me Pick My Next Plane: Intermediate 60 size
I fly A Hots, Nuff Said!!!!:)

RE: Help Me Pick My Next Plane: Intermediate 60 size
So it's either a 4 star or a Tiger. I've got a 91 4stroke Magnum engine. Should work well with either. Thanks for all the input.

To be honest I don't know. I'm just tired of doing the boring old loops around the field. I think I'd like a plane that's a jack of all trades a little bit of everything is there such a thing. What about a big stick I saw one at the field the other day and that guy was doing all sorts of crazy things. It seemed to be a jack of all trades and the Red and black with german markings was real cool. I like to fairly slow and controled but would like the ability to do cool aerobatics too.

Concider a Hanger 9 Ultra Stick on low rates and move them up as you get used to it.

I like the Stik planes with the Big Stick being #1 for me.

RE: Help Me Pick My Next Plane: Intermediate 60 size
If you want to build, scour the internet for a BTE Venture 60. Same guy that designed the 4* built this sister plane with better mods. Looks way better than the 4* and flies like a dream. You can't go wrong!
