Good engine .40 or .46
 

I'm looking for an engine for my newest project, Sig Mid Star 40. My question is which engine would be perfect for this kit.

Would you rather buy new Super Tigre G40 or ST 45 or used OS 40...., TT 46?

The TT46 is a good engine and I've never owned a ST, but in my opinion the OS 46AX is the best engine in it's class. It will cost a few dollars more, but you will be very happy with the difference.

cant beat the tt 46 powerhouse plus reliablity great all around had one in a cap 580 pulled nicely good luck

I'd happily take the "worst" engine mentioned so far, whatever that might be. The Super Tigre G-40 and G-45 both have great reputations for power and reliability. The Thunder Tiger Pro .46 is a fantastic engine. O.S. Max also makes great 2-strokes in the .40~.46 size range.

I'd probably pick the TT Pro .46 myself, but the G-45 ABC would a really great alternative. I might lean toward the new G-45 if I couldn't pick up a used Pro .46 for the same or less money. It's nice to have a warranty and to know you're not buying somebody else's problem.

I went with the ST .51 in my mid star. It was cheaper than the TT 46, WAY cheaper than the OS, and plenty of power for a more aerobatic plane later. Breaking it in was rough (liked to die a lot), but it's a great engine now that it has about a gallon of fuel through it. Just my 2 cents.

The OS 46AX is a great little engine. It will never cut out on you and it starts first time.

Each person has his/her favorite/s. Like buying a car, sometimes you get whtever you really want, and sometimes whatever is the most practical for your job to be done.

The Mid-Star has Wing Area 630 in², and weighs around 5 Lb. That is well below the rule-of-thumb that defines a SPORT model which is 100 square inches wing area per 1 # of model weight. That is a 5# model should have at least 500 sq. ins. wing area to be less than a fire-breathing monster. ;) (This rule begins to fade out with models having over 800 square inch wings.)

IMO, the TT pro is a very favorite engine. I have one NIB for a year now. I still run OLLLDDD Super Tigres. The ST 45 is an ABC engine and, considering it is ABC, is a very long life engine as much as the ST Ringed engines. The ST 51 is an outsatnding sport or scale engine. ST carbs are bored for the .51 and will give excellent handling. The 40 and 45 require a bit more attention, however the 45 ABC requires less break-in.
For your selected model, the ST .45 will be a reliable engine and give many hours of excellent performance. Do a fast break-in using a 9-6 or 7 wood prop, well balanced. Fly the machine with an 11-5 first time. After that you are on your own and as aircraft Captain, use whatever prop your little heart desires. :D

I have and like the TT-46 PRO, but I have a Aviastar .51 on order from Sig too.

I fly the ST GS-40, TT .46 Pro and OS .46 AX. The GS-40 and TT .46 Pro start on the first flip, but the OS requires the use of an electric starter. All 3 are dependable, good running engine, and you can't go wrong with either one.

From the cost perspective the GS-40 would be a great engine, and its power output would be more than adequate for the Mid Star. I've flown mine on a Sky Raider until I retired the airframe, now it's getting ready to serve duty on a Jemco Fun Scale Mustang.

Thanks for the post! I was going to ask the same question. I was wondering if the TT 46 pro was TOO much power for the .30-.40 Midstar? Would a .40 be more suitable? What about the Magnum .46?

I'm thinking of getting .40 for my Mid Star. I want to keep it as light as possible. Maybe OS 40fp or ST 40. I'm not a big fan of overpowering my airplan

Between the choice here, personally I'd go with the ST GS-40 - it'll have more power than the 40 FP. That said, I do have each engine and both will work. The OS is lighter if you either have one or can find one (OS no longer produces a 40 size plain bearing engine, you'll have to go up to a .46 LA for a new one and that is $20.00 more expensive than the GS-40 at Tower).

I've owned TT's, os,magnums, HB's, HP's, enya's and super tigres, the super tigre has to be one of the best running and longest lasting engines I've ever owned. The TT seems to put out more power but tends to be more finicky in setup. The HB & HP engines are more of a collectors or preference engine. Enya's aren't real power hoouses but reliable, magnums tend to be lower on power than TT's but seem to be easy to tune and run. I prefer Super tigre, over all others.

We pulled out the LA .40 and installed an LA .46 this week on A Mid Star, the .46 is by far A more suited engine for this little plane. The TT .46 would have been my choice but I didn't have one on hand. With the LA .46 I can do A loop that takes up the whole sky so the TT should be A lot better. Take A peek at the SK engines too, I like them as much as OS and TT engines.

I would go with the O.S.46AX. I own a couple of these and love them. If your looking at the magnum engines, they offer pretty good bang for the buck. Though I personally would choose
the O.S. Maybe I'm biast. Just my $.02

Hey Brett how are you i am the guy that is in KC but used to live in Moore okla. I have a TT 46 I just bought do you know how many turns approximatly the low speed needle valve should be out. Just got and cannot get set right. It is in a Tucano sport plane i am addicted to this stuff!!!! LOL Thanks Mike

Hey Ken you gave me some help 6 mos or so ago on a trainer I have a new plane a Tucano spourt plane I put a TT46 pro on it having problems with low speed needle aproxamatly how many turns out is low speed. thanks Mike
