I purchased my first Airplane the other day off of craigslist. It came with an old OS MAX 35 engine and I cannot find any literature on it anywhere. I think that the carb is stuck as I dont see how it works. Does anyone have any information on this engine?? Everything from how to tune it to how to rebuild it???
The barrel valve on the carb does not open when I turn the throttle lever... is it supposed to??

Is that engine the FP model? If so, I've got one I'll look at tomorrow and get back to you. I may even have the instructions. It's been too long since I've run it to remember anything off the top of my head.

It does sound like the carb is stuck. This happens when engines sit for long periods of time. the castor oil from the fuel gums up and makes things stick. You could also have a little corrosion present. Depending on how bad it is, you might be able to get things going with a little automotive carb cleaner spray or it may be bad enough that it requires a complete tear down and cleaning. I've seen them both ways.

If the barrel valve doesn't open when you move the throttle arm, the arm is loose and the screw needs to be tightened. If it is just gummed up with old fuel, soaking it in fresh fuel for a day or two will usually loosen it up. I found the instruction sheet for the Max 35 FP engine that I have. I had an old OS .35 Max-H that was missing the muffler. I posted a question here looking for a muffler and someone advised me to look at [link=http://www.osengines.com/history/engines-wanted.html]this site[/link] and see if OS wanted my old engine for their collection. As it turned out they did! They sent me a brand new OS .46 AX in trade for my old engine and my problem was solved:D So unless you are a collector yourself you may want to see what they can do for you.

I had an older OS 61 SF engine that was gummed up. I put it in a container and filled it to cover the engine with fuel (regular RC Glow Fuel) and let it set for about a week. Then, I simply removed it, wiped it down, and shook it clear of fuel. Everything seemed to clear up. Proof of that was the enigine started and ran just fine after that. It may be worth a try.

OK, I'll be the killjoy here. You're not dealing with a harmless toy here. These engines can hurt the uninitiated. Please find a local club and get some personal help with this and learning to fly also.

if it is still clogged i found that brush cleaner works great and is safe for most RC parts. (don't ask me how i came to this it just happened ;) ) also if you arn't going to use it immediately use some after run once you get it unstuck to keep it that way.

Often just using your heat gun will soften the gummed oil and free it up. Spray a bit of WD 40 in intake as well.

As stated unless you're familiar with rc planes and engines, please seek help from a local club or experienced pilot. As for as for a stuck carb or engine (castor gummed) regular denatured alcohol works just fine. Soak it for a few minutes and move slowly until free. Blow dry (alcohol attracks water) and lube with ATF or similar oil.
