Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
Hi,
I flew planes for about a year when I was 16 and loved it but Uni and other things got in way! I've always been reading and following the hobby with great anticipation for my return but due to so many factors it been hard for me to commit and join a local club (mainly due to job and location change). But I'm so nearly there, I'll be settled very, very soon. My girlfriend and I are moving in and I already have a plan for the garge or should I say 'workshop' (tool lists and ideas are all being jotted down!). I'm also buying a new car which will fit the aeroplane transport wagon bracket nicely. Once I move I will be joining a club and getting right back into it. It's been a long time coming, and I really can't wait, just the thought of advancing to all the different types of models and genres of flying is just well...tingly!! I've already asked 'santa' for my second model (Pulse 60XT). When I was younger I went from a trainer to a mid wing aerobatic and did not bad (I'm seriously not trying to blow my own trumpet, but after reading the suggested second models and what I did, I think I did not too bad!) so think that the Pulse would be a more suitable second model! From this little beauty! [link=http://i3.iofferphoto.com/img/1156230000/_i/13837413/1.jpg]Skylark II[/link] To this! [link=http://www.pbgcomposites.com/planes/2m_laser_200/David_broad_laser_4.jpg]Laser 200[/link] So, I just wanted to give a small introduction as I think I'll be here asking questions alot! And as a matter of fact I have one now!! I bought a second hand Seagull Cessna from a friend of a friend back home to use my trainer, recently I've been getting kitted out with the starter gear and been preparing for my return. I was washing down the old bird and tidying it up, I noticed there is something rattling around in the wing but I have no way of checking! The wing looks like it has has some damage repaired on the leading edge near the centre which I suspect is the cause of the rattle, my problem is I don't really know how to tackle it, I know I'm going to have to cut it open somewhere as I need to get whatever is in there as it could problems when flying. What would be the easiest and least destructive way of doing this? Cheers, Rob |
RE: Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
Hi Robert,
Wellcome back to the addiction. From your previous experience I would imagine a short time on the buddy box should see you "good to go". If you hold the wing up to a strong light you should be able to see which bay has the loose balsa "floating" around. Cheers, Colin |
RE: Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
Hi Robert,
Do you get to fly over the "Royal Troon" golf course, would be a great photo of your RC Cessna buzzing the flag on the 18th green. Good luck and welcome back GC |
RE: Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
Hi Robert, welcome to RCU!
Feel free to ask any question you may have |
RE: Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
Welcome aboard. I remimber my first plane about 25 years ago. It was a foam Cessna with an Enya .15 engine and a three channel radio. My dad bought it for me because I nagged him to death about it. He gave it to me and told me to go learn to fly it. So that is what I did, I taught myself to fly with plenty of problems along the way. The plane is long gone but I still have the engine. Still to this day I fly by myself. I probably would not mind the friendships that develop at a flying field, I just can not stand to wait my turn to fly. I like to load all of my stuff up and go fly as much as I want without having to wait on a channel to free up. I came to fly not to wait my turn to fly. Those are my thoughts on a club, good for friendships but not for alot of flying time.

RE: Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
Welcome back! First piece of advice... If "girl friend" becomes "wife" then "airplanes" become "limited". I sudjest a prenuptual that states you are authorized no less than one new plane and all necissary equipment for it per month without any argument:D

RE: Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
Just tell her what I told my wife:
When I was single, I had one airplane and a lot of women. Now I have one woman and a lot of airplanes. Which way do you want it? :D |
RE: Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
That's good Minn. I may just spring that on her tonight:D I already have about 25 planes but when you have an excessive compulsive personality disorder that's not bad:D

RE: Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
Thanks for the welcomes and advice!
Delta3 - Unfortunately thats my folks address, I live in England so the 18th of the Royal Troon will have to wait! But well spotted!! I see your from Toowoomba, I had a long term pen friend from there!! Small world! As for the plane I took Colins advice. I now have all the bits of balsa into one end and luckily there has been a patch there already (electrical tape!) so I am going to take the balsa out of there. As for the girl friend advice its all good, she knows how much I love it and knows why we go to work each day (well.....this is at this moment in time anyway!) Thanks again Rob |
RE: Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
Whatever you do, don't marry her. I married MY girlfriend and she turned into a WIFE! :D

RE: Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
Hi Robert and welcome back to the fold.
Anyone who uses an Australian F111C for his avatar has to be a good guy :) because I worked on them for 8 years as an engine fitter (had a couple of fast rides too :D). |
RE: Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
Minn, I keep evading the subject and I figure I can do this for at least enough years so I can amas a great collection of models!!
And downunder, the vark' is by far my favourite aircraft!!! I have seen absolutley hundreads of them (via lakenheath and airshows) I plan on building a turbine version when I'm ready and will either be using RAAF or Raven colours scheme. So may need some info from you and more to the point your one lucky fella, I would give my right leg for a ride in one!! Do you still work on them? |
RE: Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
I'm retired now Robert so I haven't worked on them for quite a long time but they're a fantastic aircraft. [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4ENsDFUlQ0&feature=related]Here's[/link] a youtube video of one putting on a display at an Indy car race at the Gold Coast which is a couple of minutes flying time from the air force base where I worked. Good luck with a model, there was a guy here in Australia who had a turbine powered model with operating swing wings :).

RE: Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
Hi Downunder,
I think the guy who had the F111 with the swing wings was Kevin Dodd who is now secretary of the MAAA. Saw it fly once at Tingalpa, was amazing. Kevin is on the front cover of the latest RCM News with a Tri star jet. Don't know if Kevin still has the F111 or if it is still around. As for the WIFE thing well been there done that, someone told me that the word Wife was an acronym for Washing, Ironing, Food and Entertainment. In my experience the modern wife is far to busy going out for coffee with her friends to do the washing and ironing and the food gets worse and you enjoy less entertainment as time rolls on. Don't do it planes are a whole lot cheaper and a whole lot less hassle and you don't have to pay support for them when they crash and burn. |
RE: Re-Introduction to Aeromodelling!
Franz Walti has also recently completed his F-111 now available for purchase! This will probably be the one I use.
