OS Max 40 FP question
 

Hello all, I just bought a never used OS Max 40 FP engine, but I am having problems finding the specs and reviews on it and how much Horsepower it produces...Anyone know the specs on the little engine? Also what is the best prop to swing for a warbird?

The 40 FP was rated at about 1 HP It handles a 10x6 prop farily well. I may still have the instruction sheet to mine. If so, I can probably scan it for. That was a pretty durable engine if treated well. Mine is at least 12 years old.

The Fp and LA are very similar in operation. the FP has a higher power output due to better ports. They both have plain bearings and if I am not mistaken nickle plated bores. I would say the LA 46 and FP 40 are about the same on power.

The FP seris of engines are one of the best that OS ever made. They are not a power house, but never miss. I still have a great number of 40 and 60 FP engines and they just keep running. Kinda like the Energizer Bunny. Good Luck, Dave

Remember the old magazine ads for the 40FP? The French-Canadian guy, telling the story about how he lost his engine in the fall, then found it the next spring? Standing there with the little FP in a chunk of ice... fun stuff!

It'd have to be a pretty tiny warbird for a 40FP. They're not revvers, but will turn a slightly larger prop than a ball-bearing 40.

I found the manual that came with mine. Actually, it is just a large sheet double sided. I have it scanned to a pdf file. If you send your e-mail address, I can forward it to you.

Hey blh, the 40FP is a great engine, dont think I've ever heard a bad thing about one...What part of NC are you in?..Raindave over in the 1/2a forums is a local engine guru and probably has all the data you want, mine powered a goldberg eagle 2 pretty well, I'm guessin yours is in about a .25 warbird....Rog

I had a 40 fp a few years back. It"s still to date one of the best ongines I"ve owned!:D

My .40 FP engine is older than the hinges of Narnia and has survived a number of crashes and it is still ticking starting on the first flip. The only thing I've ever done to it is a good cleaning once in a while and kept it well lubricated and bagged when not in use. I tell you it is currently dragging a DuraPlane trainer all over the sky. In short a very durable and reliable engine.

I have a 12 year old FP40 that sat on the motor mount of my never used trainer for all those years hanging from the floor joists. Never ran it. I put some 12 year old (opened to smell it when new) 10% fuel in it and it started right up. My instructor thought the engine was 'abused' but we puttered along with my training anyway. When the 10% was gone I bought a gallon of fresh 15% and wow....what an amazing difference. I had to learn how to fly it all over again. The thought that the engine had been abused is long gone now. That second gallon is about 3/4 gone and I hope to finish it off this year. By the way, I was signed off after 8 sessions of about 4 flights each and the plane survived nicely, it's an old Hangar 9 Easy Fly 40. I owe my success and the plane's longevity to my instructor. You can, but it doesnt need it,,most .40's need 5-10% nitro as I understand it..some just figure the more nitro the better, I use %35 in my 1/2A stuff and 10% in everything else.../Rog

For what you'll spend on that kind of fuel, why not get an engine that will provide more power on much less expensive fuel? A 40FP is never going to be a powerful engine, and it may not run very well on 30% nitro fuel.

Bumber I messed around with the wrong screw, do you guys know the settings for this and what is it for?

That is the idle air bleed mixture adjustment

The screw goes half way across the hole on the front of the carb for an intial factory adjustment

Typically the screw is screwed out a little ways from this point for best idle

1/2A engines require a much higher nitro content to run properly. If you run low nitro (15%) they just don't like to run. Remember you are talking about engines with displacements of .049, .051, .061, .074, etc. For .10 - .15, I prefer to run 15% nitro, and above that it depends on the engine. My Super Tiger GS 40 is very happy on 10% while my OS .46 AX and TT .46 Pro run better on 15%. My FP .40 and LA .40 don't seem to care if they run on 10% or 15%, they just keep purring away.

When you set the idle needle 1/2 way through the bleed air hole, very seldom do you need to change that setting. My FP's have never been touched and they transition without hesitation. Even with weather changes I don't have to change them, just the high-speed needle.
