park flyer
hey all,
It's the holidays again, and everyone is looking for that new engine or plane. For me it's a park flyer. I don't have a lot of time because i'm in school, but i'd like to be able to go out and fly when my dad can't take me to my club field. I'm looking for an electric plane that can handle a little wind about 5mph and is fun to fly and not too expensive. I've never used electrics except the Hobbyzone Aerobird Challenger, so something easy to set up would be nice. any suggestions? Thanks, farr301 |
RE: park flyer
What is your level of flying skill? That will be a major factor in selecting the right plane.
If you are comfortable flying a typical trainer airplane, take a look at the Parkzone T-28 or Corsair. They are at home at a regular club field but still small and quiet enough for a decent park or school yard. Both come Ready to fly complete with radio, li-po battery and charger or plug & play which only includes the airframe, motor, ESC and servos. I flew the heck out of my Corsair yesterday in between flights on my TF P-51. Today I'm taking the T-28 out along with my larger glow planes. They are both GREAT aircraft. If you are still fairly new to flying, take a look at something like the Hobby Zone Super Cub instead. It'll will work well at a park and is great for learning flight basics. www.parkzone.com http://hobbyzone.com/ |
RE: park flyer
i'm comfortable with my trainer and have a Sig Mid Star ready to fly, and a hangar 9 Ultra Stick in the box. So any mid level plane would be nice
I'll look into those, Farr301 |
RE: park flyer
if you dont mind a little noise or a little speed you should get a parkzone f27c stryker it is an awsome plane but it does need a few inprovements:
-it needs to be either repainted or coverd in bright colers so you can see the orientation better - servos need upgraiding to either hs-81's or hitec 85-mg because the stock ones have a serious problem with striping over nothing :):D this little airplane is definitley worth a good look happy flying simmo:) |
RE: park flyer
I was considering the stryker. I saw a guy at my club fly it and it seemed like a great plane. I did some math and the RTF version costs the same as the PNP version and the lipo and charger. Weird way to do it. I could easily add something to it to make it more visible. So far, sounds like parkzone is the way to go. Any other possibilities would be great.
Thanks, Farr301 |
RE: park flyer
If you want the Stryker, get the PNP version from Ultimate Hobbies and get some LiPo packs and charger(s) from HobbyCity. That will save you some $$$ and you can use your own radio equipment.

RE: park flyer
:) the stryker is awsome i flew at a field for the first time today and had the fasest airplane there lol it was the standard stryker lol

RE: park flyer
If i get a different lipo and charger, do i need to match the discharge rate? What all needs to match the recommended battery? [link=http://secure.hobbyzone.com/catalog/HZ/parkzone_f27c/parkzone_f27cparts/PKZ1030.html]Provided Battery[/link]
Thanks, Farr301 |
RE: park flyer
no you dont have to mach the discharg rate as long as you get a higher discharge than the stock batery which is a 12c i am running 25 c fightpower packs in mine and they realy work well they dont even get warm. lol i love this bird lol its so easy o fly and kinda quick :D
onley use 11.1 volt packs aswell anything over will probley fry stuff and anything under just wont work nicley :) the stock pack is : 2200mah- im using 2170mah 12c discharg- mine are 25 c 11.1 mine are 11.1 you have to use lipo chargers and balancers with lipo packs or they will cach fire or explode good luck simmo |
RE: park flyer
Too be honest, I have flown the Park Flyer FW, and corsair, and they IMO do not fly very nice at all, one gust of wind over 5 knots and that plane is gone, its too light and for 290$ I would highly recomend getting a nitro or electric balsa plane, my first corsair was so out of trim I took off and had NO TIME to correct it and it went sky high and nose dived into the ground, there so light there is very little room for error. And the FW you have to throw and me being a lefty and the tx being made for a right handed person was a challenge, that did fly better than the corsair, so if you are set on one go with the FW, only it has no gear so you have to belly land it, and be careful not too have your pitch too low or you will go through props and engine mounts as there made to break away on those like there going out of style. If you go with a corsair I have spare parts you can have that are not damaged, 2 sets of gear and one wing and 2 props. Hope this helps my friend.

RE: park flyer
wind has very little effect on the stryker at all i fly mine in easy 20 kmh to 30 kmh wind with almoast no effect
it is very easy to land and very durable :) i have had abut 200 minuts on mine now and have not broken a prop lol touch wood :) simmo |
RE: park flyer
The stryker keeps looking better and better. does it have any bad flight characteristics? i'm currently looking for a good lipo and charger
farr301 |
RE: park flyer
I haven't noticed anything that I would call bad flight characteristics. They fly nicely fast or slow. They need a good contrasting top/bottom color scheme to see them well, especially since you'll probably fly it out farther than most park flyers with the high top speed.
I'll fly mine fast for awhile (full throttle dives and low passes), then take it up high, kill the throttle, and glide it down. You definitely want dual rates. High rates give you plenty of control at low speeds, and low rates keep it comfortable at high speeds. |
RE: park flyer
just make sure the vertical stabs are in good all of the time otherwise you will almoast definitley get side slip problems and that is bad :D
on high speed passes i noticed mine has a very small fish tailing problem but you cant notice it unless you look realy hard and you cant feel it neither :D it can get loud so dont fly early in the morning around houses:D swallow chargers are realy good by the way:) simmo |
RE: park flyer
Ok, so i've looked at a few possible battery and charger ideas, and how do these sound? I know they are cheap, and am willing to pay more for a charger, but not much more for the batteries since i wish to purchase two.

Thanks, Farr301 |
RE: park flyer
I got four of these batteries (rated 20C):
[link=http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6306&Product_Name=ZIPPY_ 2200mAh_3S1P_20C] Zippy 2200mAh 3S1P 20C[/link] and two of these chargers: [link=http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=7028]Turnigy Accucell-6[/link] The charger you show will only charge at 650mA, so that will take over 4 hours for a complete charge of a 2200mAh pack. I typically fly about 1800mAh out of my packs, but still, thats 3 hours to charge at a 650mA rate. |
RE: park flyer
Thanks pkh, that charger does look better. And how will the discharge rate affect the battery life?
thanks, farr301 |
RE: park flyer
A higher C rating means the battery should run a little cooler for a given current draw, and last longer. I believe the 20C Zippy is only $1 more than the 15C Zippy, so that's well worth it IMO.

RE: park flyer
Hey man first of all parkflyers are very very fun planes to fly...
I included som e videos of my completely stock parkzone aircraft to help you decide what you want. these first 2 videos are of my Stryker F27c very very fast plane, very stable at highspeeds, very stable at REALLY slow speed.. great durability and very reliable airplane servos have never given me any issues.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3V2W1FwHK1M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1g8Te-8pOJ8 This next video is of the Parkzone Typhoon 2... very 3d capable airplane as you can see, plenty of power, FUN plane to fly, stable plane and durable, not as durable as the F27, but a great airplane, just depends on what kind of plane you want, 3d and sport flying, or SPEED with the Stryker. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4XpMX1xJSE and the last plane is the parkzone SLO-V, very relaxing flyer, amazing how slow it will fly, and this planes only 100 dollars... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzjUZgNwa3Y I have some more planes.. the Parkzone Trojan an AWESOME all around airplane, never has given me a problem.. and also maybe a fun little plane you could also buy with your other purchase would be the Parkzone Vapor... I've had a lot of fun with this plane flying in my living room, in my room, in the kitchen, anywhere... and will actually climb forever outside... GREAT planes man and good luck you won't be dissapointed. |
RE: park flyer
chevypower1930,
That Slo-v is a nice cul-de-sac flyer, I mean park flyer!!![8D] Hemicuda |
RE: park flyer
farr301, you mentioned wanting to fly in some wind, but haven't mentioned what kind of area you have to fly in. If it's not at least football field size or larger, I'd be leary of a Stryker, they are FAST. But lets assume you have plenty of room. I have flown and/or own just about every parkzone/hobbyzone plane made, plus some other electrics. So I'll add my opinion for what its worth! The ones I would reccomend in 5mph+ winds are in order from best to worst:
1. T-28 (2lb weight makes it more stable in wind with plenty of power to handle it. If not flying gas/glow, this is the one I fly when winds are 5 to 20mph) 2. Stryker (handles great fast or slow, but will float a little worse than t-28 when landing in wind) 3. Corsair (better if using 2 blade prop, but trimming and handling is more temperamental than the t-28)) 4. Super Cub (much better power with a lipo, but still floats a little worse than the 3 above) 5. Typhoon. (plenty of power, but floats and is blown around slightly worse than Super Cub in wind) 5. Fire birds. (better with a lipo)(don't recommend these often for various reasons, but if set up and flying good, Freedom will handle wind the best of the fire birds and the prop is well protected like the Stryker) 6. J-3bl/Decathalon (plenty of power, small and hard to land in wind, prone to break a prop if you don't land perfect) 7. Slo-v (better with a lipo, but still hard to control in wind) I did not list the warbirds (fw190,p51,spitfire) because they are belly landers, otherwise I would put them between the Typhoon and the Super Cub. I also did not list Ember,Vapor, or any of the "Mini's" for obvious reasons. Hope this helps with your decision, good luck and keep us posted! |
RE: park flyer
hey all,
so christmas has come and i got the Stryker along with the Turnigy Accucell 6 charger and 2 lipos from Zippy (the ones pkh has). i'll probably get my Mid Star flying before i take this buddy out. Happy Holidays, farr301 oh and the battery seems to be a tight fit in the front and there isn't much room left, so where exactly does the receiver go? and can i pull off a standard receiver or will i need a micro? And the connector from the esc to the receiver controls the throttle and elevons with only that one connector right? my dad asked me about that and i wasn't sure. I'm new to this whole electric thing :) |
RE: park flyer
hey mate
h have an ar7000 spectrum rx in mine which is way overkill but i fit it in the plane side by side against the speed controle which in theory should not be done but i done it because i had no choice lol and i have had no problems so far that would be one of my only complaints about this airplane is that it has almoast no space for the radio gear i just jam my batery in lol :) happy flying simmo |
RE: park flyer
haha i'll try getting it in there, does the farthest back back plate come off? it looks like it is riveted in sorta??
|
RE: park flyer
not sure which plate you are talking about but i do know all of the black panles come off exept for the farthest forward one that the battery sits under :) hope this helped
