Gas engine for 1/4 scale clipped wing Cub

I am building a 1/4 clipped wing Cub and thinking about going with a 26cc gas engine. Would this be appropriate. I have never used gas before. I have looked at the 26cc and the 45cc. Not much difference in price. The 45 says it swings a 20-22" prop. Seems kinda big. I have a Mag 180 4s that I use a 16/8.

Gene,
The 45 is WAY too much engine for that plane. In fact, the 26cc is almost too much. But stay with the 26cc here. The Zenoah 26 is a great little engine that you can't go wrong with.

Thanks, that is one that I have been looking at. Wondering how well it will fit under the cowl. I have not cut it as of yet.

Do you have any knowledge about the CRRC-Pro GF26i

I have a Hanger 9 1/4 scale cub and I decided to use a RCGF engine. The G26 (and any other side carb engine) will really butcher the cowl on both sides due to the muffler and the carb, one on each side, completly messing up the looks of the scale Cub engine cylinder projections. The RCGF has a rear carb and can use a pitts style muffler that keeps everything inside the cowl. Read about the engine on the Thread on the gas engine forum, there is a lot of good reports on the performance and the support by the dealers. It sold me

I too have an 26cc RCGF and have yet to install it in my 1/4 scale Pitts S2B. I bought it for the rear induction carb and cleaner install capabilities mentioned above. The engine will be more than enough for your Cub. Zenoah of course is a no brainer for reliability and quality but you will sacrafice some scale looks due to the side mount carb.

Hangar-9 puts a G-20 in their PnP 1/4 scale cub and it flys very nice. The 26 will do well.

I see that a couple of you have RCGFwhere do you buy those?

Zenoah = flying brick. They were once top of the line. In fact, I have a g-23 that I love. Very reliable, good running engine, but they are heavy, heavy, heavy. Do yourself a favor and go with one of the newer designs. Zenoah hasn't changed their crankcase design, which makes them heavier than their competition. My brothers G-38 is almost a lb heavier than the 45 he just ordered from CRRC (or some similar company). Those are basically all chinese engines and are almost all alike.
And they run good too!

You may want to go to the gas engine forum and see what other guys are saying about the different engines. The flying bricks come out about the same as most other gassers after you weigh the newer engines with there ignitions, batteries and switches. Then if something breaks or goes wrong it's also nice to have someone to go to for help or parts. Anything over A 26 on A 1/4 scale cub is over kill. I had the RCS 1.40 22cc on mine, that wasn't A bad combo. My Brison 2.4 40cc gasser in an 80 inch 15 pound Sukhoi worked out well with the Zinger 20X8 but really came alive with the Xoar 20X8. Props are just something you have to try to find that magic one.

Check out the RCGF forum. If I were gonna go gas, it would be with RCGF. Made by a bunch of American engineers that like flying planes and offering up the best of their ingenuity. Great reviews and low prices, too!

Nice informative site Joe, wonder who wrote it?? Now go to the gas engine forum and see what users say about them. So far I have only seen one out in the real world and I liked what I saw. A year or two ago there was the way cool {spelling} Brillie?? engines that were working out great until problems started poping up. Haven't heard A lot about them in A while?? When things go wrong it's nice to have someone to go to like DA, RCS. I still have my Brisons but haven't seen anything about them in A while either?? Joe, PM me with your email address, I have something just for an engeneering student, maybe you would like/understand it??

On the back cover of Decembers issue of MA
is a 20cc Gas SAITO. A four stroke too boot.

It may be too small, but it is a Saito.

Yeah, I saw that same engine. But do you notice that the ad doesn't list the price? I was thinking about getting one of these engines, then I went to Horizon's site to get the price. $529!!!!! [X(] I'm sure I can live without this engine for awhile!!!! :D

Amen to the $500.+ I have, from the front of the firewall to inside front edge of the cowl approx. 6". Is this going to be enough to mount a gas engine? Really looking at the RCGF 26cc. If anyone has one of these let me know what you think as far as keeping it in the cowl. I bought Santa a GPS so he could find my house with a new gas engine. I even programmed it to our chimney. If you see him at your house, remind him to stop here.

I will pass the information on to Santa, I will be in two different states on Christmas day, so maybe he will stop by twice ;)

I also looked at the price of that engine, glow fuel will really have to go up to make it worth while.

Did you have a good breakfast this morning?

Gee maybe I could make a twin then.
I think the price that I saw was 219. + 10.00 shipping. Is that the same thing you saw? Pecan waffle with grilled well ham and coffee. I saved some for you, but you didn't come. Was going flying this morning but gust to 25 mph. Tiger 60 with ASP-75 on ski's.

I meant the price on the saito being $500 or so.

The Rgcf gasser was around $220

I made pancakes for myself and 4 year old, boy they were good :)

Yep that's pretty steep but that engine looks so, so cool. I'm going to try and find a way to justify it one of these days.

I have a little 30cc gas 4-stroke that's actually intended for a string trimmer. It would still be on the heavy side even after a lot of work to lighten it so I've given up on converting it to RC but the thing runs so well. It starts right up, idles forever with no sign of quitting and throttle response is nearly instant. That makes me think that something like the new Saito could work very well.

What and you didn't even invite me. Now my feelgoods are hurt. Do you know anything about the RGCF gas. I think I am interested if it doesn't stick out to far so That I can't use the cowl. I have a Mag. 180 4 stroke, but would really like to try one of the gas models.
