RC addict... Been racing RC cars for yrs. I bought a Great planes Sim over a yr ago... Hundreds of hrs on it learning to fly everything including Helis. I fly a Zaggi 400 very well... This yr I just started flying 40 size trainer... 6-7 flights... take offs and landings no problems... Then solo twice... No problems... I want to jump to 60 size 540T arf (my dream plane). It will take time to build and get ready so I should have tons of flight time on trainer by then. Everyone says go to Low wing trainer... Sig 60 / Advance 40 etc. I know it's the smart thing to do. Instructor say I will have no problem with it. If I go to the 540T and use a instructor with cord am I going to just make a bunch of fire wood. I hate to spend the money on low wing trainer and then find out I could have made transition to 540T. Know what the prudent thing to do is... LOL just looking for experienced person to tell me what I want to hear... later...

Hey bull,

You should be fine going with an Edge. They really aren't tippy or wild (unless you move the CG to make em that way.) Just move your CG a tad forward for your maiden and the couple to follow. you get her trimmed right and you'll love it. As far as using a buddy cord with the Edge, I guess that would be the prudent thing to do but it's not totally necessary if you're confident in your skill. Run a gallon or two through that trainer untill you are so bored with it you are streching the rubber bands making it do more than it was made to. If you're not confident in your abilities don't go to the Edge just yet, it's a fun fun plane but it's not worth much if it's in pieces. A thought might be to drop $120 on the Magic Extra as a second plane, it would make for a perfect transition plane and you can use all of the radio equipent you have in your trainer.

What 60 size edge are you considering??? Let me know if ya get the chance.

Although the 540T will be capable of some "wild" aerobatics, you should be able to set it up as a good low wing trainer. Not sure which companies you have your eye on but it should slow down nicely for landing. Throttle management is important when flying this type of plane. It will fly slowly but is capable of speeds you aren't used to with the trainer.

Just make sure you get those tons of experience first on your other plane. The only problem I see is that while getting experience with the 540T, you may also get some "crash experience" and you really don't want to do that with your dream plane.

As far as flying qualities go it will do most things (aerobatics) easier than a low wing trainer but this will cause you to skip the step of learning how to do the maneuvers on a less capable machine.

Yellow Aircraft makes a great plane, I think the covering job on their Edge is nothing short of hideous though. I just got a Dave Patrick Edge, granted it's alot bigger than a 60 size, but I have to say WOW awesome ARF! Giant Scale Planes has a 90 Size, but again the covering is disgusting. (to me). You're pretty limited in the 60 size. VMar makes a 46-60 size, beautiful covering but the quality is a little on the shakey side. If ya crash it though, you're not out alot of $$$, but they are HEAVY!

If you look in my gallery you can see my Dave Patrick Edge. It's a pretty plane, just pulled it outta the box on Friday though I haven't even gotten a start on it yet.

Thanks Don... your pics are great. Love your 540... A guy at the field I fly at has 120 size and all I can say is WOW!!! He flys like I dream to some day! I might go bigger in the Edge... Budget says stay smaller, but I am a guy who loves his toys!

has a seagull Models .60 size that looks decent and the price is pretty good. It even comes with fiberglass... hmm... I might just have to try it out for myself! I'm pretty sure that'll make my wife love me!

I wouldnt recommend an edge for a second plane. With all due respect to the gentleman above I think they are being overly confident in the abilities of a beginner. The best way I can think of to drive someone out of the hobby is to encourage them to buy an expensive plane that will not likely last for long. I have been flying for several years and can fly all types of planes. I own two Edges one yellow aircraft and one Patrick. I love these planes but have the experience to enjoy them. The reccomendation to buy a magic extra for a sencond plane is a wise one.

If you feel confidante with your abilities go for it by the way areoworks has what they call a 90 size edge. A friend of mine has one, it flies great but he did power it with a 1.20 glow engine.
Keep this in mind all air planes no matter what kind they are take off fly around and land. the differences are in how they handle some are slow, some fast, some are sluggish, some snappy, some will fly themselves out of trouble, some you have to fly out of trouble. the only way you will know if your ready is to do it
