I have got to be the most luckiest ( Blessed ) father on earth. Today (Sunday 6\1\03 ) My 6 yr.old son succeeded on take off and landing two times in a row! I did not have to take the plane away once during both of his 15 minute flights. These were honestly his first attempts to land and they where with about a 7 mph direct cross wind. Dead center the runway! Smooth as silk. Great planes Real Flight has guest payed for itself. G2 w\ add ons 1,2 and 3. Fly's and lands every plane on it. On the runway. My hats off to Real Flight we could not have accomplished this with out you so quick. I really think he will solo in three weeks. Congratulations Alex Porter. Thank you Mr. Roy Norris for the use of your Hobbico Trainer and buddy cord setup. Picture is Alex (left) and Roy (right).

Hey Kjemcee, which Staudacher is the 16 year old flying?

If he can take off and land alone I'd say he's ready to solo now. Keep him in the hobby and he'll be at TOC by the time he's 16.

Not to interupt this pleasant and enjoyable thread, but there are several mentions about TOC and Chip Hyde. I am reminded of when I was 13 yrs old and playing football. I was forced to go to practice and didn't enjoy the game until I was playing in high school. I'm not sure if it was my dad's dream or not, but he demanded that I play and forced me to practice. I guess Sigmund Freud might say that's why I quit in high school and passed up scholarships to play at the next level!
My point here is that if a child wants to make TOC then that's terrific! It just upsets me when I see parents use their dreams to guide a childs life. Too many people think that the greatest measure of success is having something to show for it, in this case TOC. Kjemcee, in no way do I mean that this is your case, I am just making a general argument about my experience and the experiences of others in my shoes. Congratulations to yourself and your son. I wish I could have learned to fly when I was that age. |

sdt22, I have to agree with what you said but I think its a bigger crime when a parent doesn't support a child in their dreams. True the boy is to young to even know what TOC is or who Chip Hyde is but his father will show him and he may decide on his own that this is what he wants. In highschool I was state ranked in track and not once did my parents ever see me compete. Do you know whats that like? My youngest daughter played volleyball and in 6 years I think I missed 2 games. Yes I did push her but not to persue my dreams but to make sure she didn't do something she would regret later in life ( she wanted to quit her junior year). To this day she thanks me for that argument. Sometimes a parent has to push because we were young once and made mistakes.

Congratulations. I am in the process of teaching my 8 year old to fly. He really is eager to learn. Problem has been the weather. In the past three weeks he has really only gotten to fly one day. Good news is he is looking like he is going to be a natural. Bad news is he has his eye on my Ultimate!! I hope to have him Soloing by the end of June.

Congradulations on your sons flying. I have a daughter that will be 2 here at the end of june and she loves watching the airplanes fly, she is also loves to help me work on building the planes. I keep telling my wife that in a few more years I am going to teach our daughter how to fly, maybe even my wife too!

About those parents...
I think it is called "Vicarious Living" when the parent attempts to live their life through their childs...I see nothing wrong with the father turning his son to RC...Better than turning him on to a joint.
As for the Great Planes Software, is it worth the money to invest in? I have thought about buying the basic software since my son has developed an interest in this wonderful sport. However, I know about those fathers who insist that their son/daughter participate in EVERY SPORT. Let the child dictate in these matters, and not the parents!!! Firstinflight Cary, NC |
