RX and battery
As you know i am rebuilding a plane. So i gutted it out and found out that the receiver is a kyosho PCM 5 series 91. It looks okay and has the crystals but how can i test it to see if it is okay. Also the battery is a Sanyo 4.8v nimh 600mah battery and has been sitting for 20 years so i know it's bad. So where can i get a lipo battery that will work? |

Skip the LiPo and just pick up a new NiMh or NiCd battery pack and test it with that. The cost of a LiPo would be more than the NiCd or NiMh just to try it to see if it works or not. If it works, then just stick with the NiCd or NiMh pack.
The LiPo will require a regulator to set the power level to approx. 4.8 volts (5 volts would be fine) and the cost begins to build up. There is a post with a thread about using LiPo packs to replace 4.8 volt NiMh or NiCd packs in smaller RC aircraft. You can get your NiCd pack either at your local hobby shop, Tower Hobbies, or RadicalRC.com (or anywhere else that you can get a dependable and reliable battery pack). Just be careful and don't try to build one yourself if you intend to fly with it... soldering packs together can cause serious problems with the packs if you are not very familiar with soldering battery packs in series. If you do decide to go to a lipo battery you can get a voltage increaser here. It lets you use a single lipo 3.7 volt battery. It increases the voltage to 5 volts, but it will also reduce the milliamp of the battery http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...ooster_for_BEC

Stay away from Lipos in that application. They require special attention and can be dangerous. Stay with Nicads.

LiPo's work just fine with a regulator, no problems with that...
However as CGRetired pointed out, if you do not already have them on hand, ( and it sounds like you do not... ) then you are also probably missing chargers, and the other items you need for their care and feeding... As such it would be easier and cheaper for you to get a replacement but higher capacity NiCD or NiMH pack that you could charge with a standard wall wart charger. |

Okay i think i found a good battery. Go to radical rc and type in Sanyo 1000mah NiMH 4-AAA cell 4.8volt Flat RX Pack w/Shrink & Wire. What connector would i get to fit the receiver. Also what charger should i get off [link=http://www.radicalrc.com/shop/?shop=1&cart=2247711&cat=58]this[/link] page to go with that battery and how long will it take to charge the battery?

Stay away from the AAA packs. Even though it's a 1000 mah pack, it is likely to drop the voltage too low when servos are are hard over. Low voltage = receiver cuts out = loss of control = taking plane home in a trash bag. Stick with a 1000 mah AA pack. You'll be glad you did.

Go to RadicalRC and get the standard RX pack. 1000 mah is fine. Also, the RX plugs into any of the servo channels on the RX, if it is like most other RX's, so get the battery pack with the standard receiver plug.
For the TX, well, get an exact duplicate replacement (shape and form) for the TX. Does it have an old battery pack installed? If so, just go back to RadicalRC and match it up with what they have in stock and get one of those. Your link is with Tower Hobbies. You should also be able to get a TX battery pack from them, just do a little research. Replace in kind if possible, you will avoid problems if you are trying to make something work that does not belong in that particular TX. CGr |

It's relatively cold here too.. for us that is. We're supposed to get some snow tomorrow. More North Jersey, less down here, but that could change if the weather patterm moves further south. We will see, I suppose.
Gonna be a fix and repair weekend, and if time permits, getting going on my Something Extra kit build. I broke the vert stab on my Venus II while moving it last week. Hanger rash, small break near the tip, 10 minute fix with CA and a little covering repair, no big deal. However, the Goldberg Protege needs a tad bit more work. I flew it one day a few months ago, on a rather windy day. The wind was right down the centerline, so flying was actually fun. After the first flight, I put it on the ground between the bench and my car. Well, a wind gust caught it, actually put it airborne for a moment, flipped it over, and slammed it to the ground breaking off the wing mount and took broke the wing at the wing mount. The saddle was slightly damaged, but all will take about a couple of hours of repairs and it should be just fine. We will see. Later.. breakfast time. Dick. |
