2 questions and opinions?

I canceled my kyosho p-40 and top flite at-6 and bought a Nitro Models P-47, my questions are how is the quality of those planes, they sure look sharp and the arfs are only 180$ and a 71' wing span. I got the all black model which looks sharp. Any opinions or if anyone ever flew one would be great. Also on my GP Minnow with a G75 Super Tigre I put a 13x6 prop on it, is that too small or should I go with a 14x7 or 8 or maybe a 15x6? I just want a prop that will give me max speed, so what prop should I go with? Thank you all fellas.

RE: 2 questions and opinions?

The 13-6 is the std sport prop for the G-75

If you want speed maybe a 12-8

Thanks W8 looks like I went with the right one. I may try different props after I am used to flying it but I will maiden it with the 13x6. Thanks again. Jason

RE: 2 questions and opinions?

You most likely already know this but I don't know how long you've been into RC Aircraft, but I can tell you, at least for me that is, that I have quite a collection of props. Meaning, I often go to buy one, and end up geting three, all around the size I was originally seeking... then I end up having both spares and a selection for testing. This is usually inadvertent, by the way, because I usually plan on buying one and, well, you get the idea. Sometimes, you will find that the original prop selection may work just fine, but through experimentation, you will find another size that is actually better for your flying style. One never knows.. all I DO know is that I have quite a large collection of props... ;)

If you want max speed, you're going to have to find out for yourself what prop gives it on your airplane with your engine and your fuel at your field.

Start with the SuperTigre recommended props and go from there. Unless of course, you're not actually going to time the airplane to see what speed it's actually doing. Or fly it against other airplanes.

Unless you're actually doing something that will somewhat accurately measure the airspeed, just put a louder prop on it. None of us can tell the difference between 120 and 130mph, but almost all will believe the model with the louder engine is faster. If you actually want the speed, you will have to try some props yourself, and have some means to measure the speed. Failing that, just put a smaller diameter prop on it. More pitch too? Sure, why not.

If you're looking to buy "the best" recommended prop based on someone else's advice to save time or money, then look at the ST recommendations and pick from the smaller diameters with the larger pitch. If you'd like to go a step beyond that, when you're buying that prop, get a couple of different brands with that dia/pitch. To go a step beyond, try those and pick the one that seemed the fastest. Then go get that brand in a step up in diameter and maybe another of that diameter with a step down in pitch. Repeat the testing again with the new one(s) thrown in.

Again, if you're just looking to save money and time and fun, then look at the ST recommendations and pick from the smaller diameters with the larger pitch. ;)

RE: 2 questions and opinions?

My experience with NM is that their airframes are very good, but their instructions and hardware are useless. Some of the hardware is usable, but some needs to be replaced.

And their wire landing gear is usually made of soft metal and will bend after only a few flights.

RE: 2 questions and opinions?

As was stated above Nitro Models is notorious for putting out worthless manuals. They usually leave the modeler to figure most of the assembly out for themselves. Also, customer service for them is pretty bad. I'm not sure if I could find 5 people that would say they have good service, but would have no problem finding 25 that say they have bad customer service. Your milage may vary.

RE: 2 questions and opinions?

I just finished a Nitro Models Bobcat..pusher prop on a jet airframe...looks lika BVM King Cat... I won the model as a door prize so I can't gripe,
My impression of the kit isn't so great...instructions were terrible..no words to speak of just a series of pictures...fiberglass fuselage with ply ribs inside seems to be glued in solid...however the hatch on the bottom of the fuse didn't fit well....I wouldn't use the supplied pushrods...too much slop in the threads allowing the clevises to flop around on the end of the pushrod....
the engine mounting blocks were balsa!!!!!!there was no mention of thrust lines or thrust angle....the gear seemed to be "soft".
I know this airframe needs to be lateral balanced..no mention of that either...the hardware package was medicore at best
I haven't maidened the airplane as of yet...the weather here has been windy...perfer to maiden a new airplane when its calm...I think it'll be ok
As this is the beginners forum the do you know how to fly? all of the airplanes you mentioned would not a good trainer make..
Good Luck with the airplane

RE: 2 questions and opinions?

It happened to me too..I got one of their trainers ..there is a fine line between a good flyer and a tank when it comes to airplanes...well built but a tank,,took the whole runway to get off the ground with a well run .40LA,,admittedly not a powerhouse but it did great in my tower trainer....the instructs...ha...had the cg 3mm from the leading edge..yes 3 mm...not the 3 inches it actually was...I think they are and have been improving, but personally am still wary...Rog

RE: 2 questions and opinions?

From an assembly standpoint the manual shouldn't be a big deal to the OP since he's stated that he doesn't assemble his own arfs due to time constraints, but has others to assemble them for him. Successfully flying the airplane is another issue altogether.

You've already spent the money. You have it, and it is what it is. The "quality" questions should be asked before you spend your money.

You've been posting on RCU for a couple of months. It's hard to imagine that you have missed all of the "Nitro Models is junk" threads. A few people in our club have NM planes and they do not appear to be junk. But, every one had worthless instructions and some had useless hardware. Some of the owners said they changed so many things they could have built a kit in the amount of time it took to get the ARF ready.

Thank you carrelh and Minn, you always have been helpfull, also Chaslint can you explain in detail why I am not posting in good faith? Makes me curious exactly what your trying to say.

RE: 2 questions and opinions?

I don't know what he is trying to say, but it appears to me that you seem to be moving very fast, asking questions after you have already made up your mind, just trying to justify your choices. I have seen many people in this hobby and others that jump in very very fast and deep then have some problems and just give up on everything.

I have not paid full attention to all of your post, but it appears that you have bought or want to buy at least 5 different planes at the same time, yet, I don't think you are that experienced of a pilot. You just may want to slow down' and get to know what type of plane you really like to fly.

Just my thoughts, no offense meant, keep flying and enjoy life

RE: 2 questions and opinions?

Nitro Models?? Junk hardware, missing parts, chinglish instructions. The planes themselves, about par for the course with all the other lower end ARFs, not bad for the price and if you don't do anything in the way of pilot error the air frames are good for a year or so. Depends on the pilot and how you will fly it. I never see very many old low end ARFs at the field, maybe the hot glue they use comes apart or something?? You get what you pay for!! Sometimes!!

Nitro models quality? Well you could be pleasantly surprised and very happy or you could end up very angry for having wasted your money. Some of their stuff is impressive considering the cost and some is absolute junk. It's a gamble in my opinion.

RE: 2 questions and opinions?

I bought one NitroModels plane - a $59 Piper Cub, and was really impressed by the quality for the price, but like others have said, it's a roll of the dice.

I would like to offer you some general advice, based on reading many of your threads. I understand that you are trying to buy as many planes as you possibly can because right now you can afford them, and you are afraid that you might not in a few months. My advice is to take that extra money that you are trying to spend, and put it in a coffee can. I can almost guarantee that you are going to buy a plane (or three) that you will end up regretting.

If you squirell away the money until you are really ready for another plane, then you will have a much better idea of exactly which plane you will want to fly at that time.

And, God forbid, you run into financial trouble in a few months, you are going to be kicking yourself in the butt for blowing all of your money on planes. You will not be able to recover your investment by selling anything on the used market.

And thirdly, if you save your cash, the economy stays bad, but you are in good shape, there will be many more unbelievable deals that you will be able to make.

I appreciate your enthusiasm in entering this great hobby, but I seriously suggest that you take a deep breath and rethink some purchases.

Good luck

RE: 2 questions and opinions?

MClina, you have a good point, but I just published another book and they put 100k in my bank account and another 200k when the book comes out, so I did all the obligations first, paid off the house, both cars, and am using the extra to get a few more planes, I APPRECIATE YOUR ADVICE and am thankfull you are looking out fo me, but I am not going to buy that many planes. So far this is what I have and below is what I will be getting before march and then I am done until I see how the economy is

Alpha 40
Avistar
GP Minnow G75 engine
Sopwith camel which I have for sale
P-51 100 saito
Pulse 40 55ax
FW 190 with evo engine

PLanes I will buy by march and them and done until I see the affects of this dam new president.
Kyosho spitfire 40 size decided to go with that for a more of a sport plane with a 55ax or 61fx
kyosho edge 540 50 with 61fx
H9 Hell cat 60 size

I sold all of my helicopters to help fund the new planes, which totaled 700$ which bought me the pulse complete and the engine for the kyosho, and I also have a saito 91 and all electronics for the hellcat from my sopwith, so I am selling the sopwith plane only built professionally for 300$
Kyosho Spitfire

Kyosho spitfire, yes I decided on the spit for more of a sport plane....MClina and mitt you are the only ones who really help me out and I GRETLY appreciate your concern. You have been great. And I thank you for that.

Do you often post pictures of yourself in the bathroom while asking men if they want to "meet up?"

Not that there's anything wrong with that!:)

RE: 2 questions and opinions?

You've told too many tall tales, Jason. There was your P-51, which you paid a hobby shop to build for you. Remember how upset you were when it was delivered dirty, as though it had already been flown? Fast forward a month, and your P-51 hasn't been finished. The guy you paid originally just took the parts our of the box, and lost your canopy. You tell me how those two stories square. And tonight you post about having flown for two hours today, when the temperature where you live didn't get above -7 Fahrenheit. You aren't exactly gifted with words, though you've written two books. Every week you've ordered another plane or have some incredible dilemma.

You tell me how none of that seems like BS. Your stories don't line up. You're either a troll or a very needy individual, perhaps both. People here have been extremely generous with their time and energy, and you seem to be abusing that.

Hay post a pic of yourself????? I DID.
Sorry to disappoint, but online dating isn't my thing. Again, not that there's anything wrong with that! :D
