short term "Intro Pilot" program

Other than a short term "Intro Pilot" program, is there a way for an AMA chartered club to sponsor a group of students to learn basic rc flight, ground school and the physics of flight without requiring each student to join AMA? Or is there a very low cost AMA membership for them. The students would most likely want to build/fly their own RTF aircraft. I am specifically speaking of 8th graders (13-15 years old) typically with very low, if any, parental involvement. (eg We were to take on a few students for 1 semester at a time.)

The AMA offers a Youth Membershiop level for kids under 19. This is the only option besides putting them on the AMA's Intro Pilot Program.

there is also the introductory program, in which you pay $20 for membership and it lasts 3 months. it is a one time offer and if you decide to join after the 3 months, they put the $20 toward your full time membership fee.

theoretically none of the students would need to pay this fee until they are ready to fly a plane.

club membership is another issue to consider.

The AMA Intro Pilot program is a 3 month trial for 19.95 . And if you like flying and want to stick with it all you have to do is contact them prior to the end of the three months and pay the remaining 35.00 and you're good for the year. Unfortunately, most clubs require the AMA card. I'm just a rookie and Ken sure knows more than I do, the aforementioned has been my experience thus far.

Why not just go straight to the source? Call the AMA and speak to someone in the education program, or drop an email to [email protected].

RE: short term "Intro Pilot" program

No, the AMA Intro Pilot Program does not cost anything. This is basically what it is. Instructors at a club are designated as AMA Intro Pilots, and they must turn in an application at $5/year to the AMA to be an Intro Pilot. When they are an Intro Pilot they may train a student, and as long as that student flies with the Intro Pilot Instructor they will be covered by the AMA Liability Insurance. They may not fly with any pilot other than the designated Intro pilot that is on the application. Training must be completed within 60 of the time of application. There is not fee for the student.

This is copied directely from the AMA files on this program.

A non-AMA member may fly at a chartered club site and receive member liability insurance protection as long as he/she
is flying under the direct supervision of a club-designated Introductory Pilot Instructor. The Introductory Pilot Instructor
must hold a current AMA membership with the “Intro Pilot” classification. Supervised instruction must take place at an
AMA chartered club’s site, and must be closely supervised. The non-AMA member will have the same liability insurance
coverage that other AMA members receive, solely while under the direct, one-on-one supervision of the Intro Pilot
Instructor, for a period of 60 consecutive days starting from the first session. No other AMA benefits are provided to the
non-AMA member.
Participation in this program is on a one-time basis only. This program covers assisting new modelers through education
and training activities only, and does not constitute permission to fly in any organized event of AMA members or clubs,
sanctioned or otherwise. No AMA card will be issued to the non-AMA member during the 60-day introduction period.

How much cheaper can you expect? Youth membership one buck if under nineteen, Full membership for a full year and full member insurance priviledge. If they are under 18 a parent or guardian signature is also required on the application. It they want the magazine then the membership is 15 bucks.

They only require a signature by parent or guardian nothing further. It must be an original signature not a copy so snail mail application is required. The membership applications are in every issue of Model Aviation magazine or the form is in the AMA website. Its the same form for all types of membership and there is a check box for the Youth Membership without magazine

It is not neccessary for the parent or guardians to be AMA members. Dont' confuse the check box for the Extra Family Membership.
