GP Cherokee 40
 

Hi guys I just got my new Cherokee a few weeks ago, it is my second plane and I almost ready to fly but I was waiting for my pitts muffler to arrive, I ordered it before I found RCken's review and guess what... it was the Q series from slimline... so I was in trouble, according to the review, this muffler was too big so the front wheel could not move... I found that it would not be an issue at low rate but at high rate it is impossible to move the wheel... can I just adjust the rudder with less movement at high rate? It would be too hard to get another muffler and I would have to wait weeks to get it... any advice?

I you have a computer radio w/dual rates, you can set the travel where it wouldn't hit. Switch it for flight and taxiing. Make sure that the high rate doesn't effect your rudder movement, and doesn't cause damage if do push it too far.

I would set it at the max amount of travel you can without the wheel making contact and leave it. You won't be doing major rudder manuevers with the cherokee anyway.

I havent flown a low wing yet...

this is my first low wing too... I'm a little concerned about landings as I'm too used to my avistar where hard landings are not big deal...

Yes, high for more steering capability, low for flying because you won't be knife edging it.

the cherokee is a great stable and easy flyer, its basically a low wing trainer(it has the traits) with the ability to do some great intro to aerial tricks!! dont worry, if you can fly your trainer, you will be fine, just take it slow and keep the "dumb thumbs away"! :Dgood lick

do you guys think that would be a good idea to have someone on the club next to me on the maiden flight just in case? I have been fliying my avistar for two years but I know it would be a little different with the cherokee

I wouldn't say it's mandatory, but it is definitely a good idea! No shame in having someone with experience help you out with your new plane. There are one or two guys that I like to have around me when I'm maidening a plane, or even just feeling a little shaky about something. One guy's name is Mark, and I don't know if it's his talented RC skills, or his amazingly calm demeanor no matter what's happening, but I like to invite him to the flight line when I'm trying something new.

I can assure you it's not a bother to whoever you ask!

I remember maidening my first tail dragger (heck it was only a few months ago!). There were only two flying buddies at the field (the same two had me solo when the instructors weren't there yet!) and they said 'just fly it!'. I did, and everything went fine. But I was shaking the entire time! I probably still would have shook if Mark or Tony were around, but having them next to me to ask questions, or to tell me to keep the power on until I got closer to the strip or something, would probably have made it a bit more comforting.

That just depends. The maiden is going to consist of trimming the plane also. This can be a little scary if you are already worried about flying it and have never trimmed a plane before. I have successfully maidened 3 airplanes including trimming them out, but I have always gone in saying "this is no big deal, I know how to fly". This helps calm my nerves, and lets me do what I know I am capable of doing. If you think you are capable, then you will be fine.

If you have a sim, flip your controller on its back, and upside down, and move the trims away from center. Then, without looking at the controller, take the plane up and trim it out. This will help prepare you for what the plane may do.

I myself don't like having someone next to me on a maiden (I never fly alone, I just dont like someone next to me). I do however enjoy the company after the maiden is out of the way. I just dont like the added stress on maiden.

Good Luck, I bet you'll be surprised at how similar it is to your trainer. A guy at my field let me fly his pulse xt when I was only on a trainer, I was nervous until I took control of it. Only the roll rate and the rate at which she slowed down on approaches was really different.

Hello chaps,

I am thinking about getting the GP Cherokee, and as I have seen it has foam wheels. The two flying fields that I fly from (grass and asphalt) are pretty rough for foam wheels so it wont last long, so what size wheels does the Cherokee have?

Hi guys! Well… my Cherokee had her maiden flight yesterday... It was awesome! is very easy to fly but I still need a little practice with landings... for those who just got one of this, I hardly recommend to take the wheel pants off; I made a nice hole on the bottom of the fuselage with the front wheel pant at one of those hard landings. Besides that, everything went just fine!
