It take more tools to build a great model then it dose a house. The only thing is they are smaller! LOL When you saw that Master scale P-51 on the flying feild you didn't know the guy had to have a full garage full of tools to get it there! LOL The only thing that makes sense is he bought them just like you will a few at a time till he has the garage full it takes to build like the big boys! Happy modeling!

Hey,good post!!!! It is THAT kinda stuff that does indeed surprise new guys in the hobby. But about everything you bought is much needed and not wasted money. Some of it is reusable though,but a guy will learn to expect this kinda cost with every new plane. Even ARF's will nickel and dime you many times.

Hmmmm why is it then, considering that I STARTED WITH a garage filled with tools, yet I still make near daily trips to the local hobby store? I used to visit Wal-Mart daily.... now they have a missing person's bulletin out for me. I drive by WMT on the way to the LHS. The LHS now knows me so well, I am allowed to go behind the counter to get what I want myself! I still have to pay for it, though.

Building a kit will often times exceed the cost of building an ARF but that kit plane will pay you back with self satisfaction of knowing you built it and no one has one that looks like it.

And your not done yet.
You still need (highly suggested) a heat gun. Unless you plan on crashing it on your very first flight you will also need an AMA membership http://www.modelaircraft.org/ and flying club membership to have an instructor teach you the basics. |

If the REAL costs of any hobby were properly accounted for...nobody could afford them. Let's see.... how much did fishing in that little skiff used to cost me?
Boat..used and cheap at $10,000.00 Trailer $1,200.00 or so $$$ Trailer tires every three years $$$$ Hitch for towing $$$$$ Much bigger vehicle than I otherwise would need..so I could tow the boat $$$$$$$ More gasoline costs .....for the bigger vehicle ....so I could tow the boat...even when I wasn't towing the boat..$$$$$ Storage monthly $75.00 Insurance $250 annually; Driving to the fishing site...$30.00 or so a trip; Wear and tear on the bigger vehicle $$$$$ Two trips a week; 70 miles one way an extra 280 miles every week ..that is an extra 15,000 miles annually on the vehicle...Whoops, Now I have to replace it every three years. instead of five or six years $$$$$ Lures $15.00 $$$ every other day oh..maybe just every week . ( I have dozens that were used once or twice ) Rods ( twenty at last count ) $$$$$ Reels (can't count them all ) $$$$$$ Line; weights; hooks; floats; etc. etc. etc. etc AND... extra trips $$$ to far away places to catch fewer fish than I caught near home..$$$$$; Ha ha ha Rich |

At first I was going to post and say you really didn't need all that stuff. After I went through the list I only noticed a few items that I really never use. You got some pretty good STUFF!! A man needs a lot of stuff, it's sort of how we compete. When I started in RC I just made my building board, you do have a building board don't you?? After I had that I just started out with a razor knife the two CAs and some epoxy. Wax paper for over my plans and who doesn't have sand paper?? I think guys are given enough sand paper at birth to make it through there 40s. My instructor would loan me things I didn't have like his covering iron and heat gun. It took me a couple of years but I now have everything I need to scratch build my own planes. What ever tools I don't have I go to my wood shop club and use those tools. You do belong to a wood working club don't you?? Some high schools still have wood shops and they have adult night classes. Buying things will slow down after a while but for now????

I've only been flying a year now. Took up building a few months ago to spell the winter months. Since I don't have a garage, I took over the boys old bedroom and have converted it into my hangar and building room. Stuff everywhere! Like you wzac, my wife used to call my plane that dam plane, now she says that dam room! I told her recently I needed more room and was considering taking over the living room since we really don't use it............she told me to go to my room!

Many years ago, I learned that it is never a good idea to total up the costs of a hobby. It will usually make you stop!! Just get what you need as you can, enjoy the hobby and remember, It's cheaper than therapy.

I am getting ready to leave for Afgahnistan for 6 months in about two weeks. I should be able to raise the cash required to get the shop up and running in that time and then just peice meal it together for the interior finishing after that. I am guessing I have about another 10,000-15,000 to go before it will be finished. Hopefully I will be building planes in there next winter.

Well, look at the good side of it. Many of the items on the list are not consumeable. In other words, you will use them over and over. Your second plane will only cost half as much and by the time you build your tenth plane, the cost has come down to $24.37. That's not too bad.:eek::):D

CA glue is not necessary, so you save over $20 right there. Wood glue is cheaper and less hazardous. The Hinge marking tool is nice, but not necessary. You can cut hinges fine with the hobby knive, so no hinge cutting machine. Why spend $9. on a 25 foot roll of plan protector when you can spend a couple dollars on a 75 foot roll of waxed paper that works just as well? Balsa colored filler? Just collect up some of your saw dust and mix it with wood glue. Or just use some spackle. You're going to cover it anyway. For the savings, you can buy a small scroll saw that will be far more use if you ever get into scratch building. Scratch building does not have to be expensive. Balsa is cheap. I can build a 60-90 size model from plans for far less than a quality kit would cost. With the Kit, you're paying for convenience of not having to cut parts, but thats half the fun for me. Don't get duped into buying every trick out there. With a little creativity, you'll save a lot of money to spend on the next model. Brad |

When you`re starting out in this hobby, most of what you buy in the beginning is a one time investment. You didnt waste any money in my opinion and you`l need every bit of what you ordered:)

The PT-40 is also my first plane and I think I already have over $1,000 vested in to it. But most of that was tools and building a work area. But I know my next planes will be cheaper:D.

Never ever add up what it costs to build anything.
In fact it is a good idea to promptly forget what it cost to buy any individual piece. Then; if (when) you are asked how much money you have "wasted" you can honestly answer... 'I don't know sweetie, it's not very much though' |
