Float Plane

I'd like to try my hand at float flying.
I'm in need of suggestions for a reasonable beginner float plane or even an amphibian.
I'd also like to have it electric powered.
Any suggestions on this one?
Thanks

Do you already know how to fly, or will you be learning to fly at the same time?

RE: Float Plane

i just got floats for my gws planes
anything major to worry about while on water, landing or takeoff
i know the floats will change the flight charastics a bit (more weight/drag) but should my landing approch be any different?
what part of the floats do i land on (what part should touch the water first), or should i try to land on the entire float?

RE: Float Plane

Land like you normally would, but JUST before it touches down, add a few clicks of throttle. That gives it a little extra power to overcome the drag of the water

RE: Float Plane

I have flown for many years but never off water,so in a way I'll be learning to fly at the same time.
If you have info on a rank beginner float plane for someone with zero flying experience,I have a nephew who is also interested.

RE: Float Plane

Flying from water is not for beginners. One false move and you plane and equipment is broken AND all wet.

That said, if you are an accomplished flier, the Seamaster and the Neptune (The Neptune is a newer version of the Seamaster) are my favorite all-around Glow-Engine seaplanes. They fly great and are easy to handle on the water.

I've seen those planes but my idea is to go electric not nitro, for noise reasons at the cottage

RE: Float Plane

what you might want to do as a starter float plane is look for the GWS Slow Stick. It is a great all around trainer plane. They are cheap and fly great on cheap Brushless power systems that you can find anywhere. Mate that up with a set of GWS floats ($12) and you are set. That way if you dunk it, the power system is cheap. I also believe that if not natively an aileron plane, it can be equipped with them easily.

This site helped me a lot to prepare and fly my first float plane. http://www.smilesandwags.com/Floats.html

Thanks for the info on the Slow Stick.
I have heard that the GWS floats are too small for it though

RE: Float Plane

That is what I just read too, they are 21" vs. 23". (they should be about 75% of the fuse length). Not sure what other's thoughts are on this.
I did find another site that has a couple of options for you. Take a look at the pondside or the electric scout on floats. http://www.hobbyhangar.com/test/kits.htm

Nope the GWS floats are perfect for the slow stick. The hardest part is bending up the rear struts to match the front ones and to get them to stay attached to the boom of the SlowStick.. Been flying one with a stock motor off a lake behind my house for 3 years now. Just added a lighting kit to fly on those really calm nigts.

Nice thing about the Slow Stick if it flips over it floats on the wing and the float tips keeping everything but the motor dry, IF you move the esc behind the front wing hold down.

Attached image is of the Slow Stick with floats and lights just after sunset

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Parkzone Icon yet. It's natively a sea plane but also comes with wheels you can install to fly it off pavement.
