Whats a good set of wrenches at a reasonable price to cover ALL of your plane needs?

Hmm, I have a full tool chest of wrenchs and other tools and I still don't have enough to cover ALL of my plane needs!!!! :eek: :D:D:D

Me too! I have probably over $1000 invested in hand tools, Craftsman and other brands, and when it comes down to it. I still need that other tool. :D

You have a very general question so it is really hard to answer. If you are looking to stay with ARF's you will not need as many tools as if you are to build from kits. BUT the wrenches part of it is about the same.

You can go to AutoZone or Advance Auto or Walmart, and get a decent mechanics set for under $30 dollars to include a few wrenches, sockets, and allen wrenches in metric and standard sizes, allong with screwdriver bits and handle. It comes in a case so it would make a good field set, as well as use it for your shop. Make sure that the screwdriver bits work as sometimes the handle won't fit around tight places. Then you would need to add a screwdriver set.

Other tools I find usefull are the Hobbico or similar 4 way prop wrench, and a small set of prescision screwdrivers like that from RadioShack.

I looked at your profile and you have 5 planes listed. You should have a decent idea of what tools you really need. If you are still having trouble putting together a kit, the next time you are at your local club, just walk up and down the pits and ask others what they have in their flight box. Just beware of the guy that drives the truck with tool boxes on both sides of it.:D

You definitely need both metric and SAE. Often planes come with both.

What I think I use most: allen wrenches with ball ends, needle nose, wire cutters, I have a small SAE/metric socket set, a small adjustable wrench, and a set of small open-ended wrenches.

Of course this is just wrenches.

I have a hard time justifying all-inclusive sets as usually something valuable is missing, and you get a lot of (BIG!) stuff you don't need.

I find that a set of ignition wrenches is invaluable. Both SAE and metric. Search ebay for ignition wrench.

Well i ahvent flown since about Sept. Starting to get the itch with the season approaching again. Ive built about 7-8 planes , and to this point im always missing something or stripping a allen head or whatever. I was wondering if there might have been a complete set somewhere that would cover the majority of my needs. I always seem to have problems with bolts used to mount engines/ mounts. I just wanted to find a one shot solution...but guess you guys are right. Going on season #3! Yay! Higher plane prices...Boooooo!!!!!

I like a set of metric and SAE Hex Key (ALLEN) wrenches. Bondhaus is probably the best brand. I like ball end wrenches

I use the Metric and SAE ignition wrenches too.

A thin set of metric open end wrenches up to 15mm comes in handy
