Bill:

If you are using a PC (versus a Mac for instance) use Paint. Just load up the picture in paint, then use the "image" tab and stretch/scew and set the percentage to 50%. If it's the right size, save it and upload it. If not, then load up the resized one and do that one to 50% or some percentage of the original and save it and upload it.

It's been a few years since I last did one but there was just some program that was already on my laptop that I used to crop the photo down to 75 X 75 pixles or whatever it is. I've had several avatars over the years on here including some that were animated.

I no longer use windows XP so I cannot remember the name of the program now.

Guess I don't remember how I did mine. I know I didn't use paint.

Paint isn't the best tool, but it works. Save as .JPG, by the way.

I use a free program called Irfanview. Just do a search on google and you can find a place to download it. It is a very versatile program that lets you resize pictures, and it also has a batch feature that allows you to convert, resize, and rename a ton of pictures with just one click. I use it as my default picture viewer as well, very versatile software and very handy to have, and it's free!

That was very easy with using "paint".
It took me a few tries but I finally got it to 85X85 or less.
And the file size goes down as you make the pic smaller.
I resized it with a photo edtor first but the file stayed the same size.

Thanks CGr.

I used the GIMP. It's free and a fairly powerful tool.

Well, if you have a PC with WIndows, Paint is right there in the accessories folder. And it's "free". You already paid for it when you bought a PC with Windows.

And it can't be easier to use.. just load it up, select stretch and skew, use the resize, use 50% for both settings, and resize it. If it doesn't fit, do it again on the reduced size photo until you have it the right size. Save it as JPEG (.JPG) and upload it. Couldn't be easier or cheaper.

Same here. Gimp is a very functional photo program and it is free.

Just resize to 75x75, save as a .jpg> when prompted for the .jpg quality/compression I think I told it 75% or so. Just keep playing with it until the file size is right.

If I want to really serious photo stuff I use Photoshop on the wife's Mac.
