Malfunctioning EDF
So my Exceed RC CF-18 is no longer working. I took it out for a flight yesterday and finished off with a nice landing. Brought it home, charged the battery and put the jet away for today's flight. When I plugged the battery into the Hornet today, nothing happened. I unplugged it and plugged it in again and still nothing. I even tried my other three batteries. All batteries have been tested to show good voltage (approx 12.2V). I did notice, however, that all servos would move ever so slightly everytime I would plug the battery in. Now all control surfaces are a maximum deflection, so there is some amount of energy reaching the components. However, the electronics do not make the normal chime sound to indicate functionality. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? I've looked everything over and it all seems to be connected. To be honest, I'm not sure what could have happened as I haven't tampered with anything. Thanks.

[:o] try moving your control surfaces, if you can do that they it is ^^^ problem. if you can not move the control surfaces then you might have fried your esc |
RE: Malfunctioning EDF
I would second the notion that it's probably fried. Most ESC's will still operate the servos without the motor hooked up, or with a motor wire disconnected.

RE: Malfunctioning EDF
Tried to move the surfaces and nothing happens. Tried to run the engine with the same result. Very frustrating for a brand new piece of equipment!

RE: Malfunctioning EDF
If the ESC is fried, how would that have happened considering it landed fine off the last flight? Is there anyway I can trouble shoot some items? Thanks for the help btw...nitroplanes' online help leaves a little to be desired.

RE: Malfunctioning EDF
Unfortunately it's electronics, they go bad. I do IT for a living and I hear that all the time from customers. But it's true, electronics parts just die at times.

RE: Malfunctioning EDF
could it be your rx/tx by any chance. when i connect the battery to the esc the servos do twitch a little. but it is not until the tx connects with the reciever that i can move them (tx/rx not binding?)
get a regular 4.8v or 6v battery and connect it to your reciever (if you have one) and try to move the servo's if the servo's dont move its a radio problem. that would be the first thing i would try |
RE: Malfunctioning EDF
I don't think it's a problem with the rx/tx link. Though I may be wrong. Whatever is causing this issue has something to do with that chime that normally occurs, which in this case, is not occurring. Does anyone know what that chime specifically means? I think that's my best starting point.

RE: Malfunctioning EDF
that "chime" means your esc is armed and ready to function
it it not the esc that chimes it is the motor. the esc just sends to signal to the motor to make the chime so if it doesnt chime it is usually a connection problem (between esc/motor), but the servo's would work. in your case nothing is working, the esc might not be arming because it hasnt recieved the siganl from the tx yet that is why it could be a raido problem im thinking it may not be fried, becasue it continued to work until you tried it again, but it still could have fried. the radio, i think, is your problem. because of ^^^ and the fact that your servo's jitter when you plug in the battery meaning that electricity is flowing. take the esc out of the equation and you will have your answer |
RE: Malfunctioning EDF
Great info. My brain is growing with each thread. Is there a way I can get the tx/rx to work again (if that turns out to be the issue) or will I have to get warranty service? Thanks again guys.

Thanks again guys. charge your tx battery?, are you on the right model?, transmitting in the right mode (ppm /pcm)? other than that, i solve one problem at a time. make sure it is a rx/tx problem. their are so many variables. isolate the problem before you try to fix it. |
RE: Malfunctioning EDF
The tx/rx is 72MHz. Unfortunately, I'm very new at this hobby so I know very little. I'm going to call Nitroplanes tomorrow and see what they have to say. Thankfully I'll be armed with the knowledge you've provided me. Now it's time for bed in a bad mood...

RE: Malfunctioning EDF
For those who may be curious as to what's wrong with my CF-18, the Doods at Nitroplanes are nearly certain it's a tx/rx problem. A friend of mine will be bringing me his crystals tomorrow so I can test it all. I'll keep the thread informed as to the results.

RE: Malfunctioning EDF
well i was right, maybe.
hope it all works out for ya what tx do you have? |
RE: Malfunctioning EDF
JimmyJames213...congrats Dood, you were right. A friend of mine got back from Mexico yesterday and gave me his tx'er. I tested it tonight and low and behold, the Hornet is alive yet again (until I drive it into the ground that is [>:] ).
Thanks for the input. Now if I could just get in contact with NPs so they can action their warranty department... [8D] |
RE: Malfunctioning EDF
Chad consider using another TX and RX with that plane.
The included transmitter has no Expo, which is a good idea with your EDF. Do you have another TX on hand with multiple Model Memory? |
