Planes No One Should Have !!!
The thread for planes everyone should have was popular so here is the counterpart.
What models are not worth the time or money to even try them out ???? |

Great Planes PT40 with the "A" trainer wing. I build one for my first plane and the manual "strongly recommended" building the A wing. so not knowing any better, that's what I did... Ailerons were ineffective on this plane so it was very hard to learn on. Also, it would balloon like crazy with all that dihedral. It's probably fine with the "B" wing, but instead of building a new wing I just bought a $70.00 Tower Trainer and learned on that.

Since 1968, I've never run across an R/C airplane that I felt "No one should have". Some where better then others, some where easier to build then others, some where better looking then others and some had better instructions then others.

ORIGINAL: playntraffic Hobbyzone Firebird, Aerobird, etc. All the Firebird variants like the Challenger, Swift, etc I disagree to some extent. I have the Freedom ,it is a tough bird and flies great when trimmed right. But it should not be marketed as a "begginer" level plane like it is. It is hard to get trimmed correctly due to small control surface and the anti crash is useless. By the time your are skilled enough to get this plane in the air, you don't need the anti crash. But I wouldn't classify it nearly as bad as some cheap electrics like some of the "Fly zone" planes. |
RE: Planes No One Should Have !!!
Great Planes Tutor.
The recommended power system is a joke. It is a kite without a string and the wing is so difficult to keep flat that the ailerons buckle. Don't loop it unless you have glassed the center. Curtis |

An Italian Bomber WWII era....almost every video i see of one has some kind of crash involved

One word......Duraplane. Every flight is an adventure in frustration.

RE: Planes No One Should Have !!!
I had a Hobbico Extra 300 ASAP back in the early ARF days. It was a piece from top to bottom. Lasted 1 flight. The CG was printed on the side of the fuse. I found out later the CG mark was way to far aft. I don't know if more than one batch ever hit the shore.

Dave, any of the early ARFs were a risk, some of the things I have seen that happened with/to them!! I still find a lot of problems or mistakes with the ARFs today but they sure have gotten better. {{For the most part}} I know a number of planes I don't want or like myself but if I mention any of them there are a lot of people that love them that will argue the point. I even know people that loved the Duraplanes and some other total crap that has been put out over the years. I'm not a big fan of the Cub but if you fly then someday you will have one.

megatech arf or rtf
yikes.... my first plane was one of these awful cigarette pack cellophane covering, no support for anything, leaky fuel tank ( im serious) and the simple seven system is a bunch of holes for fuel to enter the wood, and the instructions were almost nill one photocopied b/w front page |

ARF's and ARC's period. Building is a very important part of the hobby. If you don't have time to build it, then you don't have time to fly it.

I like to build from time to time but a nice ARF is great to. For those that say they "just aren't" as good, take a look at some of the latest stuff from the more reputable manufacturers. it is amazing.
I like driving my truck too but I didn't build it from the ground up. Is that OK? |

RE: Planes No One Should Have !!!
ORIGINAL: CGRetired S.P.A.D. s I love our SPAD Debonair. It's a sweet flying plane, a great trainer and a fun casual plane. I also love the fact that the pressure is off when learning to fly with a SPAD. If you crash, chances are it'll fly again without any surgery. FYI - We fly balsa and plastic. Then again, this is stricty an opinion poll and I think you are just yanking some chains. Jack |
RE: Planes No One Should Have !!!
yeah, don't build a SPAD Debonair with a straight wing and as Taildragger, it's a dog. I've been flying mine for at least three years now and it may not be the lightest plane in the 46 class, but I've had a blast with mine. Sure it doesn't fly as good as a previous Avistar did, but it is quite rugged. It will loop, roll, fly inverted and land fairly easily. I'll always fly it when I wouldn't even consider flying balsa. It's been windy and I'm flying when others haven't even come out to the field. It sure is a dog, but I'm flying. ???
