Dying windows/windshield
I know you can dye preformed windshields but can you dye flat plastic sheets that are supplied in kits for windows and windshield? Or will it curl up and become deformed?
Thank you. |
RE: Dying windows/windshield
Keep the temp. around 120* and you won't have a problem. I do them all the time. I use Ritt's dye.

RE: Dying windows/windshield
How do I get it as dark as I can? And I heard that black dye don't dye plastic black for some reason. So how do I get a perfect black dye job?

RE: Dying windows/windshield
Probably more like a charcoal color at best. There is a thread called tinting your canopy that I believe covers the tinting process.

For pure blacked out canopies I've use gloss black plastic model spray paint. Spray the inside of the canopy with the paint. This will keep the paint from getting damaged, chipped, or scratched.

I have mixed red and black ritt and it comes out very black. Not as black as painting like Ken mentioned. I have also shot the inside of the canopy with the auto chrome paint and it comes out really cool looking too. Air brushing inside a canopy is also a lot of fun!!

I dyed my canopy with Rit dye using the following procedure:
Approximately 2 gallons of water One cup of Salt 2 packages of Black Rit Dye and One package of Denim Blue Tap water at 130 degrees Cleaned the canopy with dish washing soap twice and handled it only by the edges Let soak in dye solution for 60 Minutes. I kept the solution hot by surrounding the container with 130 degree hot water. I got a very slight curl on one edge so Next time I will use 130 degree water but let it cool naturally. The canopy came out a very deep black/amber that looks black to the eye. |
RE: Dying windows/windshield
Some types of plastic will accept the dye, and others won't.
I've used the Rit method several times with great results...but on a couple of occasions, nothing happened? The parts came out just as clear as they started? There is a spray on (rattle can ) window tint...you might have a look in the R/C car painting supplies...Pactra makes it. |
