how to fix this?
 

Well today was the first time I've seen this happen but a light poll JUMPED out in front of my uproar and cought the tail of it. it broke off one side of the tail. My question is will it hold if I just line it back up and glue it? If not what is the best way to fix something like this?

Stick it back together, brace it firmly in place level and wick in some CA? Doesn't appear to be too bad but I'm no pro.

You can make new pieces and glue the new to the old. You will then need to bond the new into the old with some bracing. you will need to make some plywood strips the width of the leading and trailing edge and blend it together. After I looked at your picture again, I am thinking that I would cut off the rudder, whittle out the remainder of the damaged stab and build a new one. That might be an easier fix and I know it would be a stronger one. Good Luck, Dave

Hopefully you picked up all the pieces to rebuild it. The Uproar horz. stab is pretty easy to fix. Either put the pieces together or pull out the plans, rebuild a new stab and glue it on. Should take about an hour or less, not counting the recovering

One trick I picked up here on RCU was after either the replacement was made and fitted, or the parts were re-assembled and CAed together, then use a slotmachine and cut some CA hinge slots bridging the repair joint and insert a CA hinge and soak it down with Thin CA, It makes a nice reinforcement with little added weight.

It's easier to cut the hinge slot if the joint is just tacked together though. Then after the hinge is in place, soak it down. It is also easier if you cut the hinge so there is no overhang prior to the CA application. I tried this method on a broken wing and it worked very well, until the battery opened up and the bush ate the plane.

I recently did a repair like that with my Astro Hog horizontal stab. I used a 3" piece of 5/23" music wire epoxied into the wood 1-1/2" each way for additional reinforcement. The wood is 3/8" x 1/4". I drilled into the wood 1-3/4" each way to make sure epoxy would all the way down the hole, and used epoxy to glue the wood together. Then end result is a very strong repair that won't come apart. You also have to be very careful and make sure you drill straight into the wood, not off to one side or the other for everything to line up properly.

When you do the final glue-up put a metal straight edge across the stab to make sure it stays as straight as possible.

I did the same break but mine was excessive X-Acto pressure when trimming. But, I landed it![8D]

What I did that worked great:

I inserted 3- 3/16"dowels into the fuse side and epoxied them in leaving about 3" sticking out. I used carbon fiber dowel but hardwood would work.

I marked and slotted the stab where the protruding dowels fell.

I applied Gorilla glue to the slots and dowels, aligned the fins, placed wax paper and a piece of flat wood on top and bottom of the stab to clamp on.

I clamped it up and waited a day before I took it apart.

Gorilla glue expands and is gap filling. After removing the clamps, lightly sand any excess glue and apply covering over your work.

This worked fine and you'd never know it was broke. As an added precaution I added the triangular bracing under the stab and each side of the fuse.

I think I'm going to end up cutting the stab out all together and rebuilding it. I checked it out a little closer and the rest of the wood that is left on the plane is cracked at the fuse and needs to be replaced:eek:. How hard is it to cut the stab out? I have a dremel, I think that sounds like my best choice. And sorry Ken, but like Brett said, I can't have a second rate design, SOONER!

It's not hard to cut out the stab - done it a dozen times. Just take your time. Remember to make sure that you keep everything straight, especially when you are ready to reattach the stab. Check and then double check the incidence before you glue it on. Use 30 epxoy when you reglue and double check the CG after the repair. I've seen too many folks redo their tail surfaces and don't rebalance and check the incidence. They end up building a little heavier and they fly with a tail heavy and out of trim plane.
