I am buying this box http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...L416&P=ML#tech are the plane stands just for holding the plane while you work on it or can it hold it while the plane is running to break in the engine.

How would you suggest holding down a plane at full throttle don’t want to rip off a wing.

I use a loop of parachute cord (any good strong cord should work), that on one end I have created a small loop that I can put a long screwdrive into the ground to hold it and with the rest I loop over my vertical fin and horizontal stabilizer. Take up the slack I've never had a plane get loose on me.

I use a tail hook. This thing works GREAT. You don't have to have someone holding the plane while you start it (my wife really hates getting fuel/oil on her). It collapses backwards so you just pull the plane backwards, and the main wing bumps it and knocks it down, and then the plane can go forward clearing it.

You do not want to run the engine while in the stand of this field box. It's not designed to hold it back.

To restrain my planes on the ground I use a tent stake and a length of rope. Total cost is right around 50 cents!!!! ;)

The club I belong to has a set of rules some a little overkill like all ca hinges need to be pined and you are not allowed to stick ANYTHING in the ground. STUPID!

Is your club field on top of an old landfill or something?

One local club field near me is and they do have pretty strict restrictions on digging, but, I think they allow sticking an anchor in the ground.

Our club has twelve wooden stands that are designed to restrain a plane while it is running.

You could tie a rope to a table or fence post if your field has any of those.

This is actually quite a good possibility. If a field is built on a landfill they aren't allowed to drive anything in the ground. There are many fields around the country that are built on old landfills. A lot of time the EPA likes to get flying clubs to move into old landfills because it's an acceptable use for old landfills, and will solve problems with clubs losing fields. They're more than likely to NEVER lose a field built on a landfill.

Just tie the rope to a tree, or fence post, etc.

If needed tie a rope to a car or truck, if the plane starts pulling the vehicle, then you have enough power ;)

Depending on the size of the plane, I would think about twice the weight of the plane should be a good start, I would probably go a bit heavier, for a trainer, maybe a big cement block would work.

I was visiting a field one time and brought out my two metal skewers to hold the tail of the plane and one of the gentlemen there strolled up next to me and kindly explained that the field had an irrigation system and one of the lines ran right through the pits. They explained where it was and that I should not stick anything in the ground around that area. Maybe there was an irrigation system and they've had too many problems with "unauthorized new sprinklers" popping up.

A week ago my tiger 2 was running badly, it has a super tigre 61 on it and it just for some reason wanted to be at idle or WOT. So i take it out to the back deck and place an end table that sets under the roof between some patio chairs, over the wings to restrain it. This table is at least a 10 pound table it is solid oak. I set my flight box on top of the table, so all together you are looking at 25 pounds or more of weight restraining the plane. I figured out the running issue, bad o-ring under the carb, changed it and ran it out a bit. I went to WOT leaned it a bit and the plane the table complete with field box on top moved about 6 inches across the floor...fast... Now it is a well kept deck so it was smooth, and the table had the little round plastic skids on the bottom of the legs.It was in no way as difficult as I thought it would be to move. That being said if someone had been close in front of it they would have got nailed by a 12x7 MAS at 10000+ rpm

I told on myself for one reason, PLEASE be absolutely sure that while starting a plane.The thing is completely restrained , the throttle is not wide open, your hands, your clothes, and any wires are all far far away from the prop. I have seen what a hand held grinder does when it catches a shirt, it is terrible, instant set of dentures required. These planes would be far worse.

As a safety officer I have no problem with this method. But I have cut off roten ropes and pitched 'em on occasion.
Don't tie off to the tail wheel though. We had this done at our field once with the guy in front of the plane wide open (wrong in SO many ways). It made the oddest noise when it hit him in the stomach. Minor abraisions and bruises, he was VERY lucky.
