Nexstar Question, PLEASE HELP
 

Hey everybody,

last weekend I purchased the Nexstar ARF, an O.S. .46 AX engine and a Futaba 7C 2.4 radio system. I am very pleased with the plane so far but I have seem to run into a problem, when I installed the engine per the instructions using the supplied hardware, the muffler touches the side of the fuselage when it is installed and I understand that it shouldn't be touching as it could melt the covering. How can I fix this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

You can buy a muffler extension to put between your engine and your existing muffler, which will push your mufflerout further away from your fuse.

A muffler extension would do the trick for sure. I had a Nexstar, and don't remember the mount being that far to the right. I had the RTF version, so the engine came installed from the factory. Was the mount already installed on your ARF version, or did you have to do yourself?

I put the mount on myself, but the holes were already drilled so I just screwed the mount onto those holes.

I also had the .46fxi. Maybe the muffler on the .46ax is a little shorter. Sounds like an extension will be the fix.

I had the Nexstar ARF and had the same problem. Used the muffler extension:

Mine was tight too so I took my knife and shaved it a little. Can't really see the shave as it is mostly under the muffler. Looks like yours is close to the body too. Mine was tighter by the extension. If you do shave anything remember to epoxy the wood to fuel proof.

I took a piece of fuel line and split it and layed it flat between the muffler and the fuselage. This kept it away from melting. But I just ordered the extension as I forgot about the issue LOL.

I flew it the other day without doing anything to it, and nothing happened so I won't worry now, but thanks for all the advice anyways.

I had the same issue with a .46 AX on a NextStar. If I remember correctly, I just slid the engine as far forward as possible and let it go. I don't recall any issue with muffler head damaging the covering, and it had maybe 1/64 - 1/32 between the muffler and the covering. I had more of an issue of the trim and windows peeling off due to the cheap covering Hobbico uses.

If you start to see dark grey matter appear on things, it is from aluminum vibrating on something. I had a plane with a muffler that didn't touch the plane when static, but when running it slightly rubbed on a little corner of the plane. The result was the baffle in the muffler coming loose and other parts starting to wear from the vibration.

Running your nice engine while making contact with the plane is not the best idea. Maybe it won't lead to serious damage, but for $6 you can avoid the possibility.

Funny this was brought up again...The day my extension came in!

But that might not be the only option for the extension.

hmm...now looking at this..the outside is the same size but the inside opening is smaller on the extension then the exhaust port. Is this an issue mabey?

after looking and looking...the part number is the one they say to get....but the opening isnt the same size...thought it would be...weird.

I wonder if it is done intentionally to compensate for the increased muffler volume when using the extension. It almost looks like a restrictor of some sort...

The $15 is made by OS and looks nicer. Fashion ain't cheap;)

I KNOW THIS IS ABOUT A MUFFLER AND I HAVE POSTED A WANTED AD ON HERE BUT HERE IT IS I AM LOOKING FOR POSSIBLY A DECENT USED NEXSTAR OR PARTS MINE HIT A LIGHT POLE ON LANDING TODAY

I put the engine on the plane tonight and realized I dont need an extension on this one LOL. So now I have this darn Fashionable extension for nothing. LOL
