Kyosho trainer tips?
 

Hi!
Just bought and flew my 1st model, a Kyosho Calmato (or trainer 40, same **** different name?)
Now I have an irresistable urge to modify it so the wing mounts with rubber bands instead of screws, seams more healthy (for the plane)....

I was also thinking about the totally built in fuel tank, I would like to get some paint around it in case I would have a leak or is that risk minor enough to ignore?

Anyway, I´m looking for any tips both about flying it, maintenance and possible modifications...

I happen to think that rubber band wing mounts are a plus in a trainer. They can let the wing move around during a cartwheeled landing, or if the plane flips over on the ground. I really don't think it's worth modifying the existing wing mounting though. (There's a lot of guys out thee changing from rubber bands to wing bolts! ;) )

I'd also leave the tank mount as is. If you have a leak, deal with it then.

I would have to agree with DB, in that the rubber bands are going to give you the flex and forgiveness you might need in any mishap. As for the tank, if it's already in, don't worry about it. If your concerned about leakage, remove your engine and coat the firewall and engine mount area with thinned epoxy.

My old Trainer 40 has been flying for several years now with the wing bolts. If you really want to modify it for bands you'll also need to remove the locating pegs and modify the shape of the front of the fuselage. If you don't the wing will still have no real freedom to swing round in a crunch etc. It's not necessary IMO, the wings are pretty strong ;).

The only mod I made to mine was to fix the nosewheel. The rudder has plenty of control authority on the ground and I find a fixed nosewheel a lot easier to handle on grass.

It still flies well with an old SC .46 and will do all the normal basic aerobatics without problems. I'd leave it alone and just go flying. The only thing wrong with the original Trainer 40 was that the covering was really brittle. About 75% of mine has been repaired or recovered by now.
