t28 elevator problem

I bounced a landing with my Pz t28 the other day which seemed to break the hinge line on the elevator! I was wondering if anyone has done this aswell with this plane and if packing tape on the top and bottom was a good enough fix. if someone else has a better fix i would sure love to hear it

Thanks, Dave

On the 2lb HOB decathlon I built (and later smoked a pole with[:'(]) I used covering hinges on the fins with Nelson Lite Film. I think the packing tape is as strong as the lite film so I should think what you are suggesting would work fine... Especially if you made a continous packing tape hinge all the way along the elevator/fin.

Dubro sells hinge tape. Actually I think it is just repackaged Blenderm first aid tape but it works really good. Packing tape might work good too.

You can also get a new stab & elevator set for the plane.

Yeah, I've used Blenderm and it does work fine. But, I would suggest that you put a layer of some sort of adhesive on top of the foam if you are hinging right on the foam material. If so, use some appropriate type of glue such as UHU Creative Glue for Styrofoam(available at just about any arts and crafts type store like Michaels). It goes on easy, and sticks very well. What it gives is a surface for the adhesive on the tape to stick to that is not aerated like foam is.

Just put some on your finger and swab it across the surface where the tape will be, let it set up for the time recommended on the tube packaging, then stick your tape along the glue surface.

Packing tape will be fine....be sure it is stuck well though. Some plastics like it.... some don't. You might clean the area with some alcohol ( but test the alcohol in some hidden place ( inside of the cockpit?) first. RG

One problem you might run into is that the stab is a different foam than the fuse and wings. It might react differently to glues & solvents than other parts of the plane.

I've fixed several t-28's like this with packing tape. Use the Duck brand or Scotch brand heavy duty packing tape, add a little heat from a hair dryer or very carefully with a heat gun and the tape will hold better. You'll rip the elevator in two before the tape will turn loose.
