Breaking in engines is usually done at full throttle, running rich. Slowly taxiing around would not be possible at those RPMs. Trying to break in an engine at idle will not allow the engine to reach proper operating temperature, and could cause premature wear. There are many threads on this subject in the engines forum.

If you don't want to remove the engine from the plane, firmly supporting the plane will be necessary for proper engine break in.

Like FLYBOY said, just don't want to see you ruin your nice plane (or new engine).

If your plane is well built, you'll be fine. Its standard practice to tether the tail at most every where I have flown. It's the SAFE THING TO DO!

Does anyone remove their wing to practice taxi'ing around? That might solve the problem of accidentally becoming airborne... I was considering doing this with mine when I finally get it built, especially if I end up with a tail-dragger (LT-25 or the like). Not to break in the engine, of course, simply to get used to ground-handling.

You won't hurt anything running the engine with the plane held still. The only time it might be an issue is if you had an arragement that required forward motion to provide cooling air. Other than pushers, I don't think I've seen this.

You can run it around with out the wing if you want, no problem. You should cover the opening in the fuse with something to keep the oil and gunk out though.

Do be careful whenever you run an engine somewhere like your driveway. It's amazing how good the prop is at finding gravel and other small bits of junk and flinging it directly at your eyes. Most organized flying sites have had all the small bits of crud already flung out of the way by all the engines that have been run before you got there :D (ok, that's not exactly right, but you get the idea)

the lancair gear is attached to the wing, i dont think ill be taking it off, it would be a pretty good balance job keeping it on the front wheel and the tail with just elevator and rudder controlls.

Wanna' Flip start?

Sand the trailing edge of the prop, any prop. No sharp edges.

For .90 or larger strongly suggest a glove.

Glow, set prop at 2 O'Clock for compression, Gas burners set prop at 12 o'clock for TDC.

Glow: Open throttle 50% or more. Choke or prime. Close throttle to about 1/4 open. Flip prop several times. Attach batt. Hold prop. firmly between thumb on leading edge and first 2 fingers on trailing edge. Rotate prop fully around by kind of rotating wrist for several times, or until you feel a definite *Bump*. (Don't let go!!) Then set prop to compression, give a sharp flip and you should be running. Retard to idle.
If having a problem ask a CL Stunt flier. One flip starts are a near must there.

Gas: Get a Helper.
Check/Turn off ignition. Choke and turn prop until wet carb. Flip prop several times. Set Throttle just slightly open.
Set prop just short of compression, ignition on "CONTACT" and using several gloved fingers, flip and carry through and DO NOT reverse hand.
When running, move back, readjust throttle check for no roll and have helper hold for run-up or release for taxi.

i plan on using a starter stick, dont like the thought of fingers on the prop, ill get a starter later maybe

Dragging a hunk of rope will keep it slow - but there's stuff on the ground that just isn't in the air. Use an air-cleaner or you'll chew up your engine.

you will give me a starter?, sure, anyway, i finally started it up "rich" today with a starter stick to break it in, fired up the first crank, then died out, i finally got it started again about 5 minutes later and it stayed on, kept it near full throttle while holding it between my legs untill it ran out of fuel, i plan on going to a club next week and have someone fly it with me for its next tank.

Yup, the 12v starter just spins the engine over. You'll need a 12v battery to go with that starter and a charger for the battery.
You still need a glow clip of some sort. Either a rechargable one or a lead that plugs into a power panel that connects to the 12v battery....
