How do the cheap 2.4 radios work?
 

I am noticing a lot of small cheap 2.4 tx's that come with all the ghetto rtf planes, and even some of the nicer brands as well. Do they have a coded signal like futaba, do they switch constantly like spekkys? Our club instructor says he doesn't trust them, but I haven't seen a thread or heard anything else about them. I got curious when I saw the little itty bitty foamies coming with them.

the cheap chinese ones, like at hobbycity? only the chinese know. :D
from what i understand about those, they are ok when their are no other 2.4 around, when other 2.4 showes up they are horrible.
or the ones from the vapor or other horizion hobbie thing? those are spectrum.

This is not true, We have 18 stations at our Club and on abusy dayprobably 12 are operating 2.4G Spektrum or Futaba radios with no issues at all. Try that with FM. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...wink_smile.gif

Yeah, that's apples and oranges. Those cheap radios are just that. You can fly the quality systems together with no problems. There are some pretty good deals on 2.4 Technology now.. Airtronics RDS8000 with two receivers for around $200 or a little more, and the latest release of the Spektrum DX6i are nice radios. I've not flown with the Futaba 2.4's but I would imagine that they are up to the standard outstandingFutaba quality.

I have a Futaba Fast 2.4 and just love it. I have had zero problems with it. Good Luck, Dave

I know Futaba and Spektrums are fine and don't have problems, I have both. It's the cheap chinese ones and the little ones that come with air hogs and kyosho miniums that I wonder about.

Ultimately many of the "expensive" ones are also Chinese made.

The design of 2.4gHz systems means that even the cheapies SHOULD NOT interfere with one another.

However that said, QC on the inexpensive radios can be very hit and miss.

I have a 2.4 TX that came with my CX 2 helicopter its a LOW Power unit. I suspect a great many of the less expensive units are just that low power and lack the range of their bigger brothers.

Some time ago I called Horizon and questioned them if my low power unit could be used as a buddy box for my DX7 the reply was no. There obviously are differences in these units, the short range units are just that.
