Timer recommendations
 

My radio does not have a built in timer...However, I think I would benefit from having one...Does anyone have a recommendation for a standalone timer I could attach to my radio? Obviously something small. I've looked around a bit, but I thought if someone had one they could recommend, that would save me a whole lot of wasted purchases.

got a kitchen time with a clip from Target for like 5 bucks. Its digital and simple to use with a loud beeper. You dont need an LHS for everything ya know :D

Ditto the cooking timer. you can get them in the kitchen section of Wal-mart. That's what I used on my older radios that didn't have timers on them.

My radios have timers but I find myself never using them. I always just look at my watch.

i have a timer but dont usually use it (unless im seeing how long i can stay in the air), just run the plane until you think your out of fuel, you will get a "feel" for it after a gallon or so
i usually fly until i feel like landing, or about ten min. i rarly fly at full throttle so i usually have half a tank left. however when im in the mood to just fly im good at guessing when the tank is almost out.
i fly close to the field so in the event of a dead stick i just land the plane (only happened once because of an empty tank)
since i dont have flight lines i dont need to maximize my flight times. if you do, i would go the timer method, then when the timer goes off gain some altitude, fly till you dead stick and land the plane.

Just fly till you run out....now keep in mind I'm still flying an intermediate trainer. But your approaches and landings get much better much faster when there is no 'go-around' as an option....perfect or you're walking a long ways....

I'm using a "talking timer" it announces every minute how many minuts left.
works for the the second year on the same batteries, attach it to the neck strap or to the hat, couldent be happier.

a small digital timer works well, I got mine at Radio Shack the clip eventually broke so I rubber band it to my radio,running out of fuel not a option when flying a warbird, or most any high performance type plane.

I use a Radio Shack timer attached to the base of the transmitter antenna with a spring-type wooden clothespin and Radio Shack Superlock strips. Note: this not a hook and loop material but has both halves with rigid plastic tiny fingers that won't let go accidentally.

Get the talking timer. They announce every minute the time you have left and in the last minute a female voice announces every ten seconds. Sort of like your own "*****in Betty" the fighter jocks have.

I bought a kitchen timer from the Dollar store for a buck, and epoxied a clothespin to the back of it so I can clip it to my antenna.

I have a talking timer and like it for some things, most of my radios also have timers. Now the whole story !! Most of my students use the timer from the dollar store for a buck. It works great and I even use it now and then. BEST DEAL going.

If you have a "Dollar Tree" store near you, get the 99 minute kitchen timer. For a dollar, you can't beat it. Everything in the store is only a dollar.

I like the timer on my radio. 7C. Only counts when the throttle is 1/4 or more and the radio remembers the time I have programed for a particular model. Some 8 minutes and some up to 14 minutes.

hi do fly with a timer -never know were on the field you will run out of fuel go dead stick and risk the plane-i purchased a clear syringe from the hobby shop-that is calculated in ozsEX-if you have a 10oz tank and you use 5ozs in 5 minutesyou now draw out the fuel left in the tank with the syring- in this case it would be 5ozs so you know you can fly a total of 10 minutes max on this planes tank of fuel the syringe is very useful if you have a sudden abrupt landing as the clunk in the tank can be jammed foward in the fuel tank-if you draw fuel out with the syringeand get air not fuel- good chance the clunk has been jammed to the front of the tank-and needs to be relocated to the rear of the tank-(by shaking it loose )-the result of the clunk being to the front of the tank are short unexplained engine runs on take off

I taped the "Chronometer" from my dad's old '78 Chrysler LeBaron onto my radio, and I can run it off the radio's battery! When the display gets dimmer, I know I'm running out of batteries. And we scrapped the car, so the clock and the carb from that car are all we have left of it...

Cellphone? I use my countdown timer on my cellphone - the alarm when the set time has run out almost sounds like a danger alarm inside an aircraft:eek:
