Heres a question for you pros
 

I removed the stock stripes on my Hobbico Superstar. I just wasnt happy with the color scheme. When I removed them, it left some of the color residue that I just cant seem to get off. Does anyone have any ideas? I thought about just recovering it, but dont want to go through the trouble. I want to add some blue and silver ultracote, but figured I need a nice smooth surface first.

Any help would be appreciated....

If the old stripes are self adhesive (stickers) you can desolve them with CA remover. A little rubbing alcohol on a paper towell, then some windex should get most everything off. Once everything is off, use a heat gun or Iron to tighten things up before putting on new stripes. If it has wrinkles before, you won't make it any smoother by putting something over the top.

Track down a product at your local Walmart or grocery store called Goo Gone Spray Gel.

Spray it on, let it sit for a minute then just about any adhesive residue will come right off.

Follow that with alcohol and remove any residue left over from the goo gone before you try to stick anything over top of it. Don't under emphasize this step or nothing will stick well.

Actually....hehe......the great tip came from my wife. She saw me fussing with something similar a few years ago, rummaged around a cupboard and handed me that stuff :)

I've kept it in stock ever since.

Great, thanks guys. I am pretty sure the stripes were made of covering, but which brand I couldnt tell you. On some areas, the clear film pulled off and left small spots of the original stripe color behind...

I will give these a shot and post some photos when I get it completed. I will be in Tulsa for a meeting all week, but will get back on it next weekend.

If it's just normal covering, you can usually heat a corner with an iron to get it started peeling. Then work the iron back and forth while pulling the loose corner back.

MonKote Trim Solvent might clean it off. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...P?I=LXHZ43&P=8 I use it to clean up adhesive that oozes out from under trim.
