Ruined my weekend

The first pic is what my focke wulf looked like when I left for work, the rest are what it looks like now! [sm=cry_smile.gif] Cracked cowl, sheeting under covering on wing is pushed through, and the tail speeks for itself. I had it assembled and left it in the floor of the garage which is a normal thing for me to do. My wife knew it was there when she left for work this morning, but on her way home she almost had an accident just before she got home. Being upset over the almost wreck(typical woman) she forgot about the plane and didn't pay attention until she heard a big crack noise. That was my horizontal stabilizer i'm sure. It's easily fixable, but would look like poop because of the special covering. I'm just gonna sell it the way it is and pick up a replacement. I was probably gonna maiden it next week too, the 26th is my b-day. Will be bittersweet now.[:o] I am now not going to leave the planes there anymore unless I'm home, and the only thing that has me still a little hot is all the time I had put into it already to make it just right. Oh well, I'll be a focke wulf master builder now.:)

RE: Ruined my weekend
Sorry, but you can't blame her. Heck, you can't blame them even if it their fault... for anything! If you do, they make it harder to buy more planes.

RE: Ruined my weekend

RE: Ruined my weekend
Just buy more glue!, epoxy is perfered.....

RE: Ruined my weekend
Tuff break but very nice plane is that a VQ model ?

RE: Ruined my weekend
Don't feel bad... I was in a hobby shop north of here one time just browsing when a guy came in looking to replace his Nexstar trainer. The person behind the counter asked him how he crashed it and he said he didn't crash it, his girlfriend was mad at him so she stomped it to pieces. We all told him to also go out and look for a new girlfriend in addition to a new airplane.

RE: Ruined my weekend
Brett, Fix it, but tell her you have to buy another one. Just maybe she'll understand ? Good Luck. Bob |
RE: Ruined my weekend
Memorize this:
"No honey. I'm not mad. I'm just glad you are okay. The plane is replacable, you are not. See. (shows reciept for new plane at this time)" |
RE: Ruined my weekend
HAHA, great ideas. I just came in from fixing most of the tail. Can I reuse the CA hinges or should I cut new slots? My guess is new. I decided earlier to go ahead and finish it, make it look as nice as possible with some clear coating and my airbrush, and use her sympathies to my advantage.[sm=wink_smile.gif]

RE: Ruined my weekend
I would recomend replacing the CA hinges and cut new slots for them since the balsa is already hardened around the old locations. The other option is to use a pinned hinge you epoxy in place... then you can use the original locations.
|
RE: Ruined my weekend
Hey good idea, I think I got some of those hinges already.
|
RE: Ruined my weekend
if you really wanted to you could save the covering, cut the covering off in one piece and, depending on the damage, just ca the balsa back together. then ca the covering on. it wont be perfect but it works
|
RE: Ruined my weekend
That is kinda what I am doing. Is CA the best way to put the covering back on? I was thinking about maybe some titebond spread real thin.
|
RE: Ruined my weekend
Make sure you post some pic of the repair I'd love to see some after photos

RE: Ruined my weekend
If it's not too late, try and cut along the panel lines as much as you can. Then you can put down a thin strip of black where the cut is and when you lay the covering back down any small gap will be less noticeable. I wouldn't CA the covering back down, just use your heat gun to warm it when you pull it up, then maybe balsa rite or stixit type product to put it back down.

RE: Ruined my weekend
I'm putting an OS 70FS Surpass 1 in it, should sound really good. Got the tail almost done as far as fixing the structure. I will post pics tomorrow.

RE: Ruined my weekend
Yours is in better shape than my clubs president.......his has been lost in a field for a month...

RE: Ruined my weekend
Think of it as battle damage...
Once in service, the newness wore off very quickly...warbirds didn't look new for very long. Maybe put a few "bullet holes" in the damaged area?:D |

It could have been worse;

ORIGINAL: brett65 That is kinda what I am doing. Is CA the best way to put the covering back on? I was thinking about maybe some titebond spread real thin. i just repaired some covering damage to a fun-51. i just pull the covering tight then ca it to the wood. its strong enough to get shrunk again without comming off (well thats monokote idk what you are useing) be carefull where the covering ripped, it has to be glued to something (balsa) before you can shrink it. dont try CAing covering to covering, it can works for small tears (.5 in or smaller) but more than that the ca heats up shrinking the covering and which spreads appart. |
RE: Ruined my weekend
ORIGINAL: oldvet70 It could have been worse; How did that happen? I've heard that the firewall isn't super strong. |
RE: Ruined my weekend
CFIT. The plane is very strong considering it impacted wide open. The fuselage was split almost to the tail in 4 places. The wing has some dents and it's not ever going to fly again.
