What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
Hi all
Not quite a beginner pilot but looking at getting my first warbird, so I hope this is the "correct" I am looking at getting a 40 sized warbird. It will be my first one so I am shopping around what to get. But, what I would like to know is what size four stroke will do a warbird justice. Not looking at unlimited vertical but it does need to pull the plane through standard earobatics such as loops and rolls, stall turn etc with some authority. And I don't want to have to put an anvil in the tail to balance it. At the moment I am leaning towards either an RCV58, (Underpowered maybe, heavy, but a clean installation) , a Saito FA62 (So far my first choice) or a Saito FA72 (Probably a better choice but big and heavy) I had a Saito FA56 in a sport plane but it was a tad underpowerd. I also live about 5500ft above sea level so that needs to be taken into consideration. Marcel |

The Saito 82 is lighter than the 72...It's my engine of choice for 40 size airframes.

Saito 82a Bob |
RE: What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
OS 70 - it has all the power of a Saito 82 without all that shaking. :D

RE: What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
Hmmm $349,99 for a OS 70 FS or $229.99 for a Saito .82
|
RE: What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
Hmmm, $30.000 for a Cadillac or $8,000 for a Yugo :D

RE: What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
So far the consesus seems to be an 82 ..
Had a quick look at the specs between the Saito 72 and 82 and the 82 is indeed lighter ... Not a major difference in price either. I have had 2 Saito FA56's in various sport planes and I can only say good things about Saito ... Just don't like that awfully stubby muffler ... Can see a Saito vs. OS war bewing here he he he :D |
RE: What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
No War, I have a Saito 82 and a OS 70. The 70 does shake less and drinks less fuel. There is the price difference thing. Bob |

I say OS-.70, OS-.81, YS-.63 or the new YS-.70 coming out. If price is an issue look at something like a Magnum-70. The Saitos are good engines of course and you'll do just fine with one but I prefer the others as they seem to break in faster, vibrate less and are less slimy.

RE: What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
Get the Saito 82 while its $229, normally $299. You wont be disappointed.

RE: What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
Minnflyer and I talked about building a engine sled and comparing engines. Sounds like a good winter project ,Would anyone be interested in an engine pull-off ? I`ll furnish the Yugo`s . Mike can bring the Caddy,s.

RE: What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
It appears that the new Saito FA-82b has a metal back plate. If this is true, go that route. I have a FA-72 with the plastic backplate and its way to flimsy.

Most the time I would jump on the YS or OS band wagon, I would lean more towards the YS though, with the pump system YS uses you never have to think about the fuel tank location at all and a bunch of extra power. There were two types of RCV engines but I have only used the one and don't recall the numbers. One looks like a normal engine and the other looks like a honey comb. I stuck the RCV90 honey comb engine in a Sky Shark Hell Cat, what a beast!!! Talk about tossing a big prop!!! The only down side I saw with this engine is the break in, about two gallons of fuel and they should be broken in on a stand due to the vibration until broken in all the way. Very easy mounting and due to the design they don't take up very much cowl room. I was very impressed with the engine for warbirds so if I could I would like to give another one a try.

I'd love to see some numbers to back that claim up. My 82 would pull a MAS 14x6 S2 at 9800 on 15% and 10500 on 30%.

My 40 sized Warbird is getting the Saito 82 because I have other Saito's and am comfortable with them!

RE: What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
My Saitos arent slimey at all....
and they dont vibrate that much, maybe due to the fact i balance the props and spinners. maybe im just lucky...... and by all means....82a |
RE: What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
I have two of the 100s and I have never noticed them vibrating any more then any other engine either?? They are however real slime balls and I have them leaned in as far as they will go. I too balance all my props but I never bother with the spinners. I keep reading about them vibrating but haven't seen it on my engines??

RE: What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
One thing you should probably consider is settling on an airframe first , reason is in many cases warbirds require nose weight to balance correctly so a heavier engine actually might be a better fit , depending on the airframe for example a thunder tiger 61 as opposed to a OS 61FX is heavier and with slightly less output , however the heavier engine may be needed more to balance at the correct CG , its no fun when you build and install everything as light as possible only to find out you need to add 3 to 6 Oz in the nose to balance it , useable weight is better then dead weight .... another reason you may decide is that you don't want the engine sticking out of the cowl and you would prefer that everything cowl in nicely , a diffrent engine then one you already bought might have been a better fit , you'll find that getting the airframe first has many advantages and few disadvantages

RE: What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
I have 2 Saito 1.00,s 2 Saito.72,s and 1 .56. and when the carb is set right, they are a little messy . But I do beleive they run stronger than the other brands of 4 stroke , with the exception of YS.
The smoothest 4 strokes I haveare my ASP 1.20 or Magnum .52 and the most reliable. Cheapest too, The HS needles are a little sloppy, but a piece of fuel tubing seems to be the trick for that . My Saitos are my high dollar engines, but I,ve sure had a lot of luck with the cheaper ASP ,GMS, Magnum and SuperTigre ,s. As I learn more about the hobby, my engine choice is base upon ,weight, power ,prop clearance, etc more so than Brand name . |

ORIGINAL: Insanemoondoggie Hmmm $349,99 for a OS 70 FS or $229.99 for a Saito .82 If I had exactly $229.99 to spend on an engine, I'd wait until I could afford an OS. :D Saito's shake an airframe to death. ;) |
RE: What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
Any engine wiill run rough ,if you dont know how to tune them. Why do you think they call O,S no brainer engines?
