Wing support

Got a sweet deal on discontined model at a swap meet this weekend. It's an ARF Morris Balsa nova 40. No manual came with it. The guy that sold it to me said he would send it in the mail. I have most of the build figured out and it looks fairly easy. The on;y thing I cant figure out is an 18 inch wooden dowl that I'm certain is part of the wing joining procedure, but there are no marking or holes anywhere to be seen on the inside porttion of the wings where they join together. Guess I'll just have to wait on the manual to come in the mail. Was hoping that maybe someone here had put one together. Can't find the manual online anywhere. Lots of threads on the model, but very little info. Couple of folks at the ARF site have promised manuals as well. I guess I'm just anxious to fly.

How thick is the dowel.....since its a midwing plane., is there a hole in the mid of the fuse for the dowel to be inserted with 6 or 7 inches or so sticking out each side for the wings to slide on to? Also do the wings have pins that mate with the fuselage to keep them from rotating?

the wings attach together as one piece. then a belly pan attaches underneath. One dowel centered at the leading edge, and two screw attach to the fuse on the trailing edge. Other than expoxing the wings together and useing the provided fiberglass cloth that goes around the wing joining section, there are no othe provisions for wing strength. THe dowel is somewhere @ 1/2 inch in diameter, looks just like a wing tube to me

What engine you gonna put on it?
I bought mine already built and it came with an OS .46 fx. I didn't get a manual either, but I love flying it, it does the best knife edge of all the planes I have. If I were building a new one I think I'd go with a .55. I'd also ditch the two piece main gear if you can and go with a one piece. It will help a little on rough landings. Hope you get it in the air soon and give us some pics!

I bought this plane because it only weighs a little over 5 lbs. I have a new OS 46 LA and think with the 5lb weight it'll do. Good to hear that some else has one. I know that the 46 LA wont make it a rocket with unlimted vertical, but it will do. I did notice and cable in the bag with the control rod horns. Does yours have a push pull cable installed to the elevator or rudder, instead of a control rod? I thinking it is a push pull system for one of the two. Man I hope that guy mails the manual as he promised. I would like to fly it this weekend!!

Mine has pull-pull cables on the rudder with dual pushrods and elevator servos. I'd agree that a .46 La would fly it fine for normal sport flying. It's not quite as "floaty" as my Somethin Extra, but it's close.

Thanks, sorta figured that the cable was for the rudder. Good hear that it's not a floater, should be a good flyer on breezy days!!

Well, it's not a floater if you're used to flying low wing planes and don't want it to float. But if you try to land it the same way you would a Cub or an Avistar, then it will float quite well.;)

The wing attachment sounds like how it's done on most. Some will have two dowels up front but most have one. The belly pan I asusme is for looks.

RE: Wing support

You would be correct, I've already had to epoxy my belly pan back on after it came loose in flight and only the monokote holding it on. The dowels and wing bolts are part of the wing itself.

Got the manual in the mail yesterday. The 18 inch dowel is not for the wings, it is for a Y elevator push rod set up. That will certainly be a new endevor for me. For the wing joining all the manual calls for is applying thick CA! Would you do that.? I'm thinking it should be 30 minute epoxy! Pics show the wing joining setup minus the fiberglass 1 inch wide strip that goes around the wing joint once they are joined, the strip IAW the manual gets thin CA

RE: Wing support

Yours is a little different than mine. Looks like your belly pan is actually part of the wing joining assembly. But I'd agree with you on the epoxy, CA might be ok where the sides of the belly pan meet the wings and for the strip you mentioned but I'd use epoxy on the ribs and joiners. Good looking plane, you're going to like it.;)

Bill,

I would use a lot of epoxy instead of ca.

PPPPPP Happy belated birthday.

I agree. Strip away as much covering from the wing root as will not show in the fuselage & under the bellypan and epoxy on fiberglass.

You want to end a snap roll with the same number of wing panels as you started with. :D

Thanks all. Followed your advice and added cloth and epoxy. Should be good to go.
