Avoid TroyBuiltModels.com

Troybuiltmodels.com has lost my business forever. I placed an order with their "black friday" deals (the page has conveniently disappeared). Anyways, when I got the final subtotal for the order that I had placed, I noticed that it was less than what they were advertising. So the 95 dollar JR receivers were like 70 bucks. I was like, "WOW! They double discounted me!" since they placed on the order form THEY LIST AN ADDITIONAL DISCOUNT.

Anyways I got his call from a guy named Ewardo who says that "Ops they made a mistake", shipping is more and they won't honor the price that their checkout software said I would pay. He demands "You take this new price or I will cancel the order" several times while I'm trying to figure out what he was talking about. This irritates me to the point where I won't do business with them anymore. He says the double discounted price "its below cost", so I'm like, ok what is your cost? "Oh I can't tell you that". Good grief, if they can afford to sell a receiver for 95 bucks (retail is 189), but not at 70, then what are these people's markup??

I'm a computer consultant and when I screw up, I eat the cost. I've done this only a few times, BECAUSE IT MAKES ME CAREFUL NOT TO SCREW UP. But my customers respect me for that. It shows that *I* respect them in return. It builds a GOOD relationship. I've been working for the same 3 companies for over 10 years now because of this relationship.

I will continue doing business with Tower Hobbies and Horizon. Both stand behind their products and their pricing. I have been doing business with them for years. This shows me that in the future, I should stick to the good guys, not these hacks like TBM. If a company lists additional discounts, they should honor those discounts. Not rudely demand that you either pay up or cancel. In this economy, or at any time, if you want my future business and you want my money, then you need to treat me with RESPECT.

They won't dupe me again. I recommend against Troy in your future purchases.
David

I've talked to the guys at TBM and they were incredibly helpful. Not only did they give me a good deal on the accessories I bought, they went out of their way to head to the warehouse, measure a few wingtubes for ACTUAL diameter, and call me back with a selection of sizes. Great prices, great service. A few guys in my club use no one but Troy Built Models as the service is generally superb and they have good deals on some pretty expensive stuff (giant scale, etc.) I will not hesitate to use them again.

$20,000 isn't hard to get to when you start dealing with Giant Scale gassers for IMAC. I know one club member that easily has $7,000-$8,000 tied up in one plane. And he's building two more just like it.

My experience with Troybuilt Models when I decided to purchase a 30% gasser last year was nothing if not exceptional. They worked with me to put together what I wanted, gave me an incredible deal on the accessories I needed, and answered any questions I had quickly and accurately. Further, TBM doesn't sell any products they don't believe in.

It's a shame that you had a bad experience with their Black Friday sale. I expect they were probably inundated with orders. I hope you find what you're looking for elsewhere. I'm quite certain Towerhobbies and Horizon will be happy to provide you with whatever you want.

They are a great company to deal with in my opinion. Great prices, great service, GREAT PRODUCTS, and as knowledgeable as anyone selling RC in my opinion.

I've made several large purchases from them and got a better price by a considerable margin in one case. They were very helpful and had no problem taking back an item I had a problem with and replacing it. My experience and those of others I know in my club has been excellent so based on that I will continue to do business with them until things change, if they ever do.

Why wouldn't it be gone? Black Friday was last week.

Sounds like a computer software glitch and the guy CALLEDYOU to explain it. And why would you expect someone to tell you their cost? That is not how a business is ran. I agree with blhollo2 on this one.

Good one, smithcreek.

OP- Dude, what is your issue? They had a malfunction in their order system; it happens. It would be really cool if they honored the price, but instead they are sticking with the original deal that they offered to you and you accepted. You were going to buy the reciever at $95, right? So you placed an order at the price you liked, ran across a glitch, and after some shuffling still got the price that you originally agreed to. They can't stay in business by selling items at a loss and a fellow would have to be a real goon to think they should. Mail order houses run extremely tight margins and can't afford to eat much of anything.

I'm also very unhappy with their sloppy customer service. Recently I sent back a new retract for a repair. I sent the following email:

"Several weeks ago I had a problem with a new retract that I purchased from you for a ME-109 Messerschmitt 73”. In accordance with your instructions I sent in the retract for repairs. The block that holds the strut on the retract tightens with a socket head screw to hold the strut in place. After tightening the screw two or three times it became frozen and would not move. Also I damaged the head of the socket screw, so that the allen wrench could not get a grip. I sent the retract to you for repairs about three weeks ago. Today I received another retract. It is a replacement, and most likely a used one. This is obvious because the same socket head screw is frozen, and the head of the screw is damaged. Now I have the same problem that I had three weeks ago – a useless retract, and an airplane that I’ll not be able to fly in the foreseeable future.

The least you could have done (besides sending me a replacement retract) was to check to see that it was in operating condition. I can’t send it back to you because I’m leaving for an extended vacation in 12 days.

Obviously, I’m very upset with the quality of your customer service, and I’ll address this in various forums on the web. This is part of the reason that your company is developing such a poor reputation on these forums. There really is no excuse for this kind of negligence and sloppy customer service. Now I have to find a local machine shop to remove the socket head screw and make some sort of repair. This is what I should have done three weeks ago, if I had known what to expect from you.

I can’t tell you how disappointed I am with your company. Needless to say, I will not be dealing with your company in the future."

They responded to tell me that they were offended by my remarks. They did offer to pay something for any local repairs. The money is not the issue. It's all the lost time. Sending me a used replacement, that has the same problem (i.e. a locked and mangled set screw) is just negligence. It's like they didn't even test or even have the time to look at the replacement and notice that it was useless.

jester_s1 11-13-2013 08:22 PM

Normally I don't respond to 4 year old threads, but like the OP here was told, mess ups happen. They are being extremely reasonable to pay for your local repair costs. The vast majority of companies would only offer to replace your item if you send it back to them at your cost. Take them up on the offer and get the screw fixed.

steph69 05-11-2014 04:01 AM

there is no excuse for bad customer service, if you let a company get away with it they will continue to have poor customer service. it is very reasonable to complain you would not accept this anywhere else so why should the rc hobby be any different.

Probably about 15%. So if they pay $80 and mark it up to $95 they would lose $10 at $70. Most retailers state they will not honor mistakes in billing. You didn't alert them when you thought they had "double discounted" you.
