Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
1 Attachment(s)
Well, the trucks are starting to drive out on the lakes around here and hopefully we will be enjoying a long warm up, as it has been about 2 weeks of sub-zero temps out there. For all of you in the area of the Twin Cites metro area, I'd like to invite you out to Bryant Lake in Eden Prairie on the afternoon of Saturday January 23rd (around 1:30). If there is good interest, I will bring a charcoal grill and some food to cook up. If it is mild (~15 Deg F), I will bring a portable fish house and a heater for people to warm up in. Last year we had about 6 people out to fly and another 6 to watch and it was a great time. The weather was perfect (Jan 31st - 40 and calm), hopefully we will have a repeat. Let me know if you think you can make it. It was fun, and it is a great opportunity to put faces to names or handles. If you have skis or floats, or a water plane, it should be able to fly. The lake itself is rather large and we will setup away from icefishermen and other people enjoying the lake, so there should be no conflict. I have a 4x4 pickup to move people back and forth from the boat launch on the NE side of the lake. Feel free to PM me for details.
Hope to see you then, Curtis P.S. Photos from last year. |

Here is a picture of my stik on floats. They are not the prettiest planes but with the webra 50 on there, it moves pretty good :)

RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
That thing is going to haul. It will be a lot of fun to watch.

RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
Dave E. Kougar with a webra 55 is still 10-15 mph faster , but I can almost keep up with him (not skill wise :( ). The plane took me a while to get used too, but I like it now.

RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
Sounds like fun. I may just have to run down there. I just got the LiPo for a yet unflown UltraStick 25e with floats. I used to fly a Kadet LT-40 on skis but sold it for use as a club trainer. I also have 4 stroke powered UltraStick 40 and a FourStar 60 looking for their first flights on skis.
I fly with the St Paul club. FWIW, my control line club had 20 who turned out on New Year's Day for our annual freeze fly - and it was only 4ยบ for the high temp of the day. |
RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
Sounds like fun Curtis!
I'll have to get a plane ready! |
RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
That would be great Scott, at least it is close. Tell Rick to get out there too.
Pipe Major, I saw your pics about the CL even on New Years, that is dedication, it was cold that day. It'd be great to have you out there and get to meet you. Curtis Jon, I figured Dave might have hooked you up with that Webra, I bet hos really scoots. I think I might have to put some skis on the 4*, it's been too long since I've flown it. |
RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
Well guys, good news, bad news.
The bad news is, I won't be able to make it. The good news is, I'll be flying down in Florida that weekend :D See you at the auction! |
RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
I don't have any planes on floats. Or skis.. for that matter.
Hmm.. I wonder what size skis my STM would require... |

Count me in with the the Piper Cub. It's a well run-in & well oiled flying machine ready for a good winters day. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif If the lovely lady is game, which i'm sure she will be, there will be 2 of us. It'll be good to catch up with everyone... CUTHERE!!! |

RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
Awesome, it sounds like it will be a fun turnout.
Lyndon, grab some skis on the way to the cities (Hub Hobby has the Maiden MP skis, which are aluminum). If we are having the same weather as today (30's) I will bring the grill and some brats and buns. I'm looking forward to it. C |

<span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">Hey All -</span>
The weather on Bryant Lake was, dare I say, fantastic today, with calm to 3mph winds and a partly cloudy sky. The lake has only 1-3"of snow for a base so most any aircraft will work out well for the coming Frozen Float Fly. That being said, attachded are a few pix from today when Curtis and I crossed paths on the lake... quite a nice surprise. Cu all soonhttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif |
RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
Well, it is starting to look like a bad day for flying tomorrow. Anyone who is interested can still fly, but I will let people know by 11am on the thread if i will be attending. Not a big fan of flying in freezing rain.

You guys should come down here.
Here's a shot from outside my office |
RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
Zip it Mike! ;)
Enjoy your time down there. I think there are a few jealous folks here. C |
RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
You're a moderator, Mike. Am I allowed to say "bite me" as long as I do so without malice?;)
|
RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
I will second what Scott says ;)
|
RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
Well, since you guys can't fly tomorrow, I'll send some pics from the field here for you to enjoy.

RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
With regrets, I am canceling for today. I live in the northern Twin Cities 'burbs and it's glare ice everywhere this morning. My son came home last night and can't even pull all the way to the top of the driveway.
It's also very gusty, I did not get my shipment of EC-5 connectors I was hoping for so I'm chickening out and staying home today. Hope you reschedule another event soon! |
RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
I would agree, my wife asked if there is de-icer for rc planes ;)
Jon |
RE: Minnesota Frozen Float Fly (Part 2)
Yep, I'm calling it canceled. we'll see if I can get time next Sunday afternoon, maybe we can do it then. Also, don't wait for me, if you guys would prefer then, go for it, the lake is plenty open for flying whatever you bring and the park is free in the winter.
