Who is a beginner ?
 

25 years ago I started flying RC . I than put away this hobby for 18 years. Now ( 2 years ago) I am back.
I am now going from trainers, cub, gliders, flight sim. to a U Can Do 60 . And having a very stressful time setting it up. I have been asking lots of questions. and feel very new to this hobby all over again.
I have asked most of my questions under beginners . And get answers. when I go to questions & answers , It seems no one answers.
So am I a beginner ?

You'll almost always get answers here. Everyone seems very willing to help. Simple questions are best though. Specific questions could be better answered in the dedicated forum. Questions on assembling an ARF could be better handled in the ARF forum. You'll get answers from folks who probably have the same model, and can relate their experience with it, and maybe have pictures to clarify. You see a lot of questions here on tuning a glow engine. Lots of help available here. But if you want to know something more specific about a particular engine, you might want to post in the Glow Engines forum. It all depends on how critical the info you need is, IMO.

I would say if you're questions are being answered in the beginner's forum, keep posting there.

How does one determine a beginner? That's a tough question. Depending on what I'm flying I still think I'm a beginner, but I feel right at home flying my Ultimate 1.20. Can you still be a beginner and fly a U-can-do? Sure- I've heard they fly very nice with shorter control throws, and when you're comfortable, the throws can be made longer.

For a long time I was scared to fly anything other than a trainer for fear of crashing. A good friend of mine once told me "if you're going to fly, you're going to crash!"

It may sound silly, but I got back into flying a little over a year ago after a 6 year break when my kids were little. Now at 8 & 5, they are self sufficient enough to not drive mom crazy while I'm gone. Though if I'm going to the field, My 8 yr old almost always comes with!

There are several dedicated Moderators assigned to the Beginner's Forum, a couple of Community Moderators (Minnflyer and DavidAgar) who regularly monitor and post here, as well as myself that is always watching what is being posted. If something gets posted in the Beginner's forum that should be somewhere else we'll take care of moving it there. But for the most part if a question has to do with anything related to being a beginner in the hobby we'll usually let it stand. And we all realize just how broad ranging those questions are, and that's why most questions are allowed to stay here.

I am 43. I have been flying RC for 3 years. Flown-built 10+ planes. I have read every book about planes my local libraries had by the time I was 12(that doesn't say much about my local library). Just when I think I am no longer a beginner I open my mouth and say something really stupid. So your thread gave me the the opportunity to appologize for all future brain malfunctions...BW

I believe the Beginners forum has more people reading it and looking to help out. There are about 2.5x as many posts here as in the Q&A forum. After I first started in this hobby, I cruised the beginners forum for a couple of years before I even noticed there was a Q&A forum.

no doubt about it there are more people reading the beginners forum, I get a kick out of reading some of the postings, spend most of my RCU time in the warbirds forums, but check the beginners to see if I have anything pertanent to post on a particular subject.

learned alot from the beginners section when I started back into RC, good people and information, and lively debate at times :) :D

You write very well. Many times I ignore questions from people who do not bother to use proper grammar, spell check, punctuation, capitalization, or write in a manner that shouts "I don't care whether you understand me or not". I hear the shout and move on.

I was in a similar situation: Flew a bit of R/C gliders and control-line and spent 20+ years away then came back in 2002. This was the place I found answers and have stuck around; hopefully being somewhat helpful myself as a pay-back. I like the beginner's forum because folks are friendly and less full of themselves here.

For some reason there is not much activity in the sport flying forum. I would think that would be #1.

So are you a beginner? No. Just an experienced novice in a world of sufficiently advanced technology so as to be indistinguishable from magic.

I'm on my 3rd incarnation as a beginner.  1988-1990, 2002-2002, 2009-present.   Fortunatly for me I havent crashed anything this time around.  Sure wish the weather would come around.  Its been so long since I flew (November) that I feel like a beginner AGAIN.

Well, I got my first kneeknockin flight out of the way, and made a big ol beginner mistake(several really)...long story short,,building a friend a sig rascal .061, boring plane, so I put an OS.10 on it thinkin about puttin floats on it, well it balanced ok and I was at his place flying ,,first time I'd flown it with the .10..well its a floater of a plane so as I was running the landing pattern through my brain,,not that simple as all I have to land on is the dam to the pond (Hey I didnt say it was a good plan),, and yeah just to make it interesting the pond is surrounded by woods on 3 sides.....well I almost always deadstick in,, didnt take too long for that little tank to empty out,,yes now the fun begins, I am over the woods, not thinking the engine is at least twice the weight( norvel .061 vs os .10) and the nose just drops like a rock..coming in hard, fast, downhill, and 180 degrees from where I want to be....that was the first decent day of the year, and I dont think I'll be going back there to fly,,walked away with a broken prop, and was glad that was al!!....Rogl
