I use a credit card for all online purchases so it can be 1 pay , or 3 pay, or 10 pay, but I ONLY use a credit card for online for tracking purposes, anything else, if I cant buy it, I cant have it....Rog

Ok, soap box warning here!!!!!

My wife and I cut up our credit cards 12 years ago, and now we don't buy anything that we don't pay cash for (cars and house excepted of course). I can't count how many times since I've been in the hobby I've seen guys put a high dollar airplane on their credit card just to get it quickly. Then they turn around and crash that plane. The plane is gone, but the payments and interest are still there!!!! Plus, who wants to increase the cost of a plane/radio/etc... by adding interest on it?? To me it's just not worth that just to get it quicker.

My advice here is to simply save your money until you can afford it, then buy it when you have the cash put together. I understand why Tower does this service (making more money) but I disagree with them offering it and I wish they didn't do it. It's this same attitude that is partly to blame for the financial problems in the country right now. Convincing people that they can buy more of an item than they can actually afford. IMHO, if you don't have the cash in hand then you shouldn't be buying it!

Ok, I'll put my soap box away for awhile. ;):D

The CPA in me says don't do it. On the other hand, it is interest free financing isn't it? As long as you pay it on time, keeping your money in your own hands for a bit longer isn't a bad thing. Just be responsible.

Amen. I figured out that the easiest way to build up any sort of significant money is stay out of debt, especially with credit cards. They are an absolute rip-off. Been there, done that, learned my lesson. The card companies act like you can't survive or be somebody without their product but that is a lie. Over-spending on credit cards and excessive debt in general is a serious epidemic in the US. We only have a mortgage and we are on track to pay off the wife's car 4 years early; that's it. We'll also keep that car 10-12 years before replacing it. Funny thing is, I have more money, a more secure future and more "stuff" now that I don't use the stupid cards. As for the Tower easy-pay, I quit using it. I figure if I don't have the money to buy it today, then I just wait a few weeks until I do. Plus, if I don't have the money for a $300 airplane or engine then I'm probably spending too much anyhow and need to stop for a while.

Yep. Some people say that debit card purchases are not as secure but that's not the case, at least not with a Visa debit card. They carry all the same protections as their credit card.

While it sounds great to say you have a radio the holds Xnumber of planes, in reality it's rare that you're have more than 6 or 7 FLYABLE at any one time.Plus, if you have that many planes flyable it'll extend your enjoyment of the planes if you "rotate" them out. Fly 3 or 4 planes for a few months/summer, and then switch them out with other planes. Then when you come back to the first planes it's like getting a new plane all over again!!!!

know i wil have the extra cash
Wait until you have the cash in hand before you buy the radio. Ican't count how many times I've heard these famous last words from people. They buy something on credit because they'll have the money next week/month/year. Then when the time comes an emergency pops up and all of a sudden that extra cash is gone and all you have is a big debt bill. Or even worse, next month you find something else you want to buy instead of paying off the past bill, so you buy it. Now you still have a debt hanging out there. This is EXACTLYhow people get in trouble with credit. They're eyes get bigger than their wallets. Wait until you KNOW you have the money to spend and then buy it ONLYwhen you have the money in the bank.

Trust me, you'll be better off in the long run for it. Sure it would be nice to have that nice new radio NOW. But is it going to stop you from flying? Nope, you already have a radio and planes. Fly those until you can afford the new radio. Ihave personal experience in this from my history in the hobby. Iinherited a plane, radio, and engine from my dad when he past away. At that time Iwas starting a business and cash was EXTREMELYtight and Ijust didn't have a lot of money to buy planes with. Iflew that trainer for quite some time after Isoloed simply because Ididn't have the cash to buy a new plane. The trainer was all Ihad, and trust me in that Ihad a blast flying it. Didn't bother me that Ididn't have the fanciest gee-wiz-golly-bang plane on the market, I was flying!!!!!! When I did get my second plane Iended up trading some computer work for a second hand Airtronics 4 channel radio, Long John (stick type plane),and anOS 40 engine. And then Itook my trainer ANDthe new/used plane to the field and flew both. It was almost an entire summer on those two planes before Icould afford to get a third plane. But INEVER went into debt to fly.

Having had a wallet full of credit cards, and having cut them all up, I can tell you from experience that it's very easy to get along without one. I have lived just fine without one for quite some time now. If I was offered one with 0% interest I would turn it down in a heartbeat. I have no use whatsoever for one.

Well,

Everybody has said good enough, I myself am a victim of credit cards, Thank GOD I got rid of one, and trying to get rid of others, hadn't we hit so bad by this economic crunch, we would be doing great. I just ordered my plane after 26 months eversince I got to USA. Still sporadic jobs, no consistent earning, but I continue to strive, studying so that I can get a better job. Paid cash for my guitar and amp, got money left over from my college grant, I ordered my plane Hangar 9's P51 Mustang MkII PTS. Cant wait to get it this Thursday:D

Credit sucks

We get the offers in the mail every day and shred them. Why in the world would I want to finance relatively small purchases? Not only do they nail you in interest if you don't pay it all in one month, the merchants who take the cards are also charged a fee so they make less too. If I really, really need to finance something, I can always go down to the credit union, talk to a nice person and get what I need.

My Dad used to tell me this stuff over and over in my late teens and early 20's but I never listened. I thought I was smarter. I wasn't.

I do much better with the local banker than I do with any credit company. We bank both our personal and business banking with a local bank and have had the same banker for the last 12 years. Last summer when my wife got rearending we needed to get her a new car (arrrgghhhh, I hate having a car payment now. Her old car was paid off). We went shopping, found the car, I called the banker on the phone, told him what we wanted, we put the dealer on the phone, the banker said we were good for the cash, we drove the car home that afternoon, and signed the loan application and loan paperwork 4 DAYS LATER. How much did they finance?? Close to $20K. All on a phone call to a banker that we've known long enough for him to know we were good for the cash.

Chuck,
Please DON'T shred those credit card apps. What you need to do is take that blank application, stuff it into the postage paid envelope that came with the application, seal it shut, and drop it in the mailbox. Or even better yet, save up your junk mail and wait for those credit applications. Stuff the postage paid envelope with all that junk mail (just make sure your name isn't on any of this) and drop it in the mailbox. Why??? Because those companies have to PAY for every envelope that comes back to them. Consider it the little man's way of sticking it to the greedy banks!!!! ;)

Which means they will just increase their fees and decrease their dividends.

You can't beat they system. I have ONE credit card. I use it for EVERYTHING. I pay it off EVERY MONTH.

That was the ORIGINAL idea behind the credit card - use it to pay for things you would normally pay cash for, and pay the card off monthly. The hype was that you then just carried the card instead of cash. I know because I go back to those days in banking. Just like everything else, the Almighty Dollar and the Bottom Line drove changes. I can't be too critical now because that's where part of my retirement income comes from to pay for my participation in this hobby.

Amen! My wife and I have two credit cards, Visa and AmExp. We pay all of our bills and expenses with them or by electronic funds transfer. The credit cards are paid off in full each month. I have never paid interest on them in the 40 years I have had them. We write maybe two checks a month and I carry very little cash with me. I have always paid cash for the cars we own; the only loan I have ever had was on our house which I paid off as quickly as possible. For the last 10 years we have been debt free and does it ever feel nice.:D If we can not afford to pay for it now we don't buy it.

That's the trick! You have to have the discipline to pay the whole amount every month to reap the benefits of interest free money.

I like the 3 pay. It helps hide those really big purchases from the wife :D

I stick it to the bank by having only one credit card. One that gives me a percentage of cash back on all purchases. I get at least .5% but up to 4% on gas and home improvement stuff. I've never had a late payment in over sevn years. No annual fees. They have payed me close to $2500 back over the years and it costs me nothing! I put most everything on the card (but only when I have the money to pay it off) They keep increasing my credit limit hoping I won't pay if off for some reason. The joke's on them!
