OS 40 LA Plane Suggestions?
I recently acquired a new OS 40 LA nitro engine in a trade. I was just wondering what plane do you suggest i should put this on? I don't want to put it on anything that it will struggle to get in the air. Price is a factor so the cheaper the plane the better....but performance trumps price bc i want something that will fly well. Thanks for all you suggestions. Have a great week!

RE: OS 40 LA Plane Suggestions?
I put my .40 LA in a nitro planes trainer. It flew really well for 49 bucks.

RE: OS 40 LA Plane Suggestions?
For performance, price and all of it, get yourself a Sky Raider Mach II. You can have your local hobby shop order it, or buy from the distributor , Airborne Models, over the internet, or get one from Don Stegall, who lives in Monroe, NC. That looks to be about 30 miles from you.
Best buy is probably from Don. His e-mail is [email protected]. You can get more info from the member list of www.RCPRO.org. Just assemble it as in the instructions, put an APC 11 X 4 prop on your LA and have a ball. Do not add nose weight!!!! Yes, we use them for Club 40 racing, but that is because they are such a great airplane. Ken Erickson |
RE: OS 40 LA Plane Suggestions?
get the tower fun-51, it is a kit but it doesnt take very long to build and is easy to build/cover
im flying mine with a old os .40fp and it flies well, i dont have unlimited vertical but the plane floats along at slow speeds so well its just a ton of fun to mess around with |
RE: OS 40 LA Plane Suggestions?
The O.S. Max .40 LA would be a good fit for planes in a number of categories:
Trainers: Tower Hobbies Tower Trainer 40 MkII ($79.99), World Models Sky Raider Mach I ($99.99), World Models Sky LA Flyer 40 ($109.99), Wings Maker Wingman I ($79.99), Sig Kadet Mark II kit ($69.99) Sport Planes: World Models LA Racer 40 ($109.99), Phoenix Models Dolphin 40 ($99.99), Wings Maker Wingman II ($79.99), World Models Sky Raider Mach II ($99.99), Sig MidStar kit ($89.99), Sig Kavalier kit ($72.99), Great Planes Escapade ($99.99) 3D & Fun Fly: Tower Hobbies Uproar 40 ($89.99), Hangar 9 Tribute 36 ($94.99), Tower Hobbies Fun 51 kit ($49.99), Great Planes Dazzler ($119.99), Phoenix Models Funstar 3D ($109.99) The .40 LA, while not the most powerful .40-size 2-stroke on the market, is a good reliable engine that provides plenty of power for a number of high quality .40-size airframes. Good luck and good shopping! |
RE: OS 40 LA Plane Suggestions?
I agree with Ken Erickson. The Skyraider Mach II is a fantastic aeroplane. Probably the best spent money in my RC career.:D It's cheap; I can relax while flying and try new maneuvers. It can go fast with a 40LA and perform aerobatics. It can fly slowly and putt around the field at 1/4 throttle. Gentle and straight forward stall in most situations.

Down load some free plans for an Ugly Stick. 48" span for a 40 is good. Try the scratch building forum's sticky for free plans. Its as easy a build as you can get. I would stick with built up wings to keep it light.
Or down load Paul Swaney's 25 size TACO profile plan. an LA 40 should be close in weight to a ballbearing 25. also an easy build. |
RE: OS 40 LA Plane Suggestions?
I'd vote for the Tower Uproar. I have a .46LA on my Dazzler, which is pretty much the same plane, and it's got plenty of power. The Uproar should be a bit lighter. Get the ARF for $89 and have fun with it.

RE: OS 40 LA Plane Suggestions?
Because of the relatively LOW power of the LA engines, if you are not intending on flying a trainer, then you should go with a far SMALLER plane.
The LA .40 is about the equivalent of a .25-.30 standard carb/bearing engine in terms of power. That makes it better suited to a .25 to .32 sized plane. I fly the LA .46 in a .25 ModelTech Extra, and it could use a bit more power. As someone here once said, "the LA .46 is the BEST .32 engine, I've ever owned!". |
RE: OS 40 LA Plane Suggestions?
Nice looking little plane Mike is showing. You can also look at the House of Balsa web site at some of there smaller planes. I only use the LA .40 in the smaller trainers but have used the LA .46 in a number of 40 size fun fly planes like the Up-Roar and Dazzler. For some reason there is a huge difference between the power of the .40 and .46 in the LA series. The LA .40 may fly the GP Up-Roar ARF??

RE: OS 40 LA Plane Suggestions?
If we start with the manufacturer's overstated specifications:
OS .65 LA - Output: 1.70 hp @ 16,000 rpm OS .46 AX - Output: 1.65 hp @ 16,000 rpm OS .35 AX - Output: 1.30 hp @ 16,000 rpm OS .46 LA - Output: 1.20 hp @ 16,000 rpm GMS .32 ABC - Output: 1.2 hp @ 18,000 rpm OS .40 LA - Output: 1.00 hp @ 15,000 rpm GMS .25 ABC - Output: .85 hp @ 18,000 rpm Of course the above tends to be extremely optimistic. I've never gotten my .46 AX's to that high of an RPM on the ground using a recommended prop. In spite of that you can use the above as a rough guideline to tell you how the engine would perform. So an OS .65 LA might do well in a .40 sized plane. While the OS .40 LA would do well in a .25-.30 sized plane. |

SPAD - FREE!!!
Find a used Coke sign, the only cost is the radio equipment that you will have to put in any other plane. Tim |
RE: OS 40 LA Plane Suggestions?
Hi!
Of course it will...if you prop it right! use a 11x5 or 11x6 RAM or APC prop if you fly at sea level! A 10x6 is not that good. |

ORIGINAL: jaka Hi! Of course it will...if you prop it right! use a 11x5 or 11x6 RAM or APC prop if you fly at sea level! A 10x6 is not that good. The OS .40 LA has a hard time turning an 11x6 prop and it will bog down badly due to the low power. A 10x6 is somewhat optimal on this engine. |
RE: OS 40 LA Plane Suggestions?
Hi!
No ! It will turn a 11x6 APC at around 9000-10000rpm! |

RE: OS 40 LA Plane Suggestions?
Another vote for the Skyraider Mk II.
Plenty of power for the plane and the plane itself will do all the tricks. |
RE: OS 40 LA Plane Suggestions?
Got an OS40LA in my Avistar and it flys no problem, of course you actually have to fly it like a real airplane and not do crazy 3D stuff but thats more interesting to me anyway. Basic loops, rolls, stall turns, inverted flight is all easy.
10x6 prop is your friend. |
