What to do?

Ok, I am looking into getting a plane and all that fun stuff. I have already paid for AMA membership and the closest flying field is about 40 miles away. It is not that I mind that, but I have tried my best to get ahold of somebody that belongs to the field short of driving ouyt there everyday and sitting around waiting. I went through the AMA club list and email the guy there and I found another contact on RCA that I tried to contact. No one has gotten back. I have done everything short of driving out there everyday and waiting till someone shows up. I am almost of the thought of just driving the 2 minutes to the open filed down the road and learning to fly on my own, but that negates the usefulness of the AMA insurance.

Try stopping by on a weekend of better yet find out when and where the next meeting is held and show up.

Meeting nights tend to have more people show up

"Be patient young grasshopper, it is unwise to use knowlegde you do not have."

Keep trying the field and try your nearest hobby shop, they always seem to know the right people to contact. I would not try it on your own, could be a very expensive lesson waiting to be learned.

IF You cant get any help lerning to fly after a while and you want to do it yourself tri geting a Firebird XL,thats what I did. The XL is easy to lern by yourself and is very stabale. It can go about 25-30 MPH and fly for about 15 min. or longer iv you likr to glide.

Also the Firebird XL cost about $130 and you can get spare parts. It is vary strong and can take a few nose dives at 25 MPH with no problom.

Yes, I understand to try a meeting night...but when are they? I mean seriously, I live in the boonie. The nearest hobby shop is 50 miles "the other way" and there are other clubs in that direction, but since this one is closer (ok, it may be only 25 miles away, i didn't measure). When i looked I didn't really see any board to post anything to and no contact info on the sign.

maybe I will look into other clubs near Cedar Rapids, IA.

DO NOT GET THE FIREBIRD XL!! it is only 2 channel, get the aerobird... if your going to get one of those it has rudder, elevator, and speed control .. the firebird XL does not have elevator so you will have to give throttle to gain altitude i have the firbird II and its the same way my brother has an aerobird and its ALOT easier to fly cause you have total control .. if you headed for a fence with the firebird your screwedif you can aviod it by just rudder control.... i've seen aerobirds for $149 free shiping online and the aerobird come with EVERYTHING including 8 AA batteries for the transmitter... IF you have a radio already i would suggest a GWS beaver or a slow stick look on ebay a guy name tlrascal sells them for a good price... just ask him what all you need ...

or alother alternative would be to get the superstar EP, off towerhobbies site and just buy larger wheels for it like dubro super lite wheels 2 3/4" or 3"

try the field on Sunday between 10 or 11 am, to 3 or 4 in the afternoon there should be someone there in that time period. If it's hot that day go early or late.
