I was flying with my instructor when 10min into the flight the muffler fell from the sky. I tried looing but to no avail. When i went to retrieve the plane ( the engine quit as soon as the muffler came out) only the 2nd part of the muffler came off.

1) how do i keep this from happening
2) Where can i purchase only the 2nd half without buying a whole muffler

Engine: Mangum Xl .40

Check the parts list that came with your engine you may be able to replace it. Also take it to the LHS they might be able to match it with another brand. Worse case Slimline used to make a clamp on universal muffler that was cheap

Try lock tite or a drop of thin CA

Threaded Rod

This seems to happen enough that many at our field have replaced the "stock" rod or long bolt with a heavy threaded rod available from a good hardware store. The replacement can be thicker and will hold up better. You will drill through the threaded end of the cap, use two nuts to lock it on there. Use a nuts on the front end also. In addition I was just told to mushroom the ends of the rod to prevent the nuts from coming off.
I'm off to the hardware store right now!!

You can use just about any old can on the back of the muffler if you want. The cans that hair mousse come in are popular. Get bit of threaded and some nuts from the hardware store and screw it together. Use some RTV available at an autoparts store to make a good seal. Drill an outlet hole somewhere (location is not critical) and away you go. It's ugly, but it's cheap and works.

Of course, you can always just order a new muffler. Magnum parts are quick and easy to get, I should know, I've ordered enough of them.

The second link is the parts list for the Mag .40XLS. It's 2 pages. Looks like a new muffler is around $25, a bit pricy. You could also try a Tower or other brand muffler. I don't know for sure in your case, but on the smaller engines, the Magnum muffler mounting dimentions match up with OS pretty closely. And I'm pretty sure the OS and Tower .40s have the same muffler bolt pattern.

The same thing happened to my os46la on its first day at the field. I used a piece of 1 inch aluminum conduit and turned it in a lathe to fit inside the muffler and heli-arced a cap on the end. I drilled two holesin it one for the mounting screw and the other angled back for the exhast gas. I used 4/40 threaded rod to attach it and double nutted it. It is almost as quiet but has a deeper sound. If I ever replace it the muffler for a Tower Hobby 46 BB will fit it for $14.99.

2nd half of muffler fell off. How to replace???

a good tip. os mufflers seem to have that problem form time to time. the muffler on my easy sport fell off and somehow went through the righ wing. i am not sure how. Here's what you do. you buy some threaded rod of about the right diameter. put a locknut on top of a lockwasher on each end. it will never come off in mid flight again.

btw, if you keep an eye on your engine (if it's not cowled where you can't see it), you almost always get some warning before the tailcone of the muffler falls off.

The warning is in the form of some black oil-gunk appearing on the outside of the muffler. That black gunk is metal filings from the two parts of the muffler rubbing together. If they move enough to rub and create black gunk, you have the beginnings of a problem. In general, if you see black gunk appearing in your exhaust or around your engine, shut down the engine and take a few moments to inspect all your bolts and nuts. Something is working loose somewhere. I've found loose carb bolts, loose mufflers, loose muffler tail cones, and loose engine mount bolts on my planes and on student's planes just by watching for that black goo.

aluminum oxide grease. I sometimes see that stuff come out of my cown, but i have checked everything, from the reculator plate, to the exhaust manifold, to my engine mounting bolts (i have an aluminum mount) and nothing shows up. there is no ratteling or any kind, nothing. i guess trouble means black goo, but black goo doesn't mean trouble.
