2 part question on evolution engine and props
 

hello all and thanks for the help in advance :).

ok i have a evolution trainer engine i just bought and i am wondering 2 things about this engine=

#1 what is the actual size of this engine ? the displacement says its .455 cu in is that about the same as a .46 size engine ?

and now the 2nd part, what prop have people been using with this engine other than the 3 blade ?

btw this engine will be going on a slowpoke sport arf i think. still undecided or if its same size as a .46 it may go in my machi veltro 205 warbird if you all think it has enough power ?

p.s. one last question = when you switch to a larger diam prop does it help you to slow down for landings ?

I have an evolution trainer engine installed on my Hangar 9 Alpha Trainer plane, which is an excellent .46 engine, and it runs like a champ right out of the box. The .46-size engine has been broken-in and adjusted at the factory prior to shipping. It’s meant to just, install in the plane and Fly. That what I did and had no problem at all with this engine. Start up every time like clock work.

I did remove the 3 blade prop and I am using an 11x 7, with this prop the Alpha Trainer plane fly’s a lot nicer. The 3 blade prop slows the plane down to mach on take off not enough power. Moose, if your are going to use a prop with 7 of pitch, use the 10x7, your gonna over-heat the engine with the 11x7 in due time, trust me. I think the best prop for that engine is a 10x6. It's a lot easier to ake off and land, and u can go vertical with it. Try that with a 11x7 ;) Also, if you want to do maneuvers, high speed, put in a 9x8, you'll be living life:D Later

basman.. hello there.. i also have this engine on the alpha and its great...not sure which engine you have..i think i read somewhere that the one on the alpha is classed as a .45and the new one that is sold by itself is more like the .46 put out by O.S. ...love the engine...i have been using 10x6 and 11x6 on it like the 10x6 better...anywho thats my story..spooner

I fly vertical with the 11x7 prop now on my alpha no problems ;). I will give the 10x6 a try.

If this engine is a .46, then a 10 X 6 prop is too small. 10 X 6 is the recommended prop for a .40 size engine. A 10 X 7 might be okay, an 11 X 5 would probably be better. (That 11 X 7 is WAY too much prop for the engine.)

Ditto, I'm almost finished with an RCU Review of the Evolution, and after the 3-blade, I went to an 11-7. It is outstanding!

All of you guys who are saying that the 11x7 prop is way too much for the Evo .46 are dead wrong. You really need to fly this engine before you make any judgements. I have been running a 11x7.5 Top Flite wood prop on my Evo .46 ( not the trainer system engine that comes with the three blade prop) on a Kadet LT40 for two months now, and it performs great. the plane WILL go vertical with this prop, and there have been no signs at all of any overheating problems. The only other prop I have run is an 11x6 MAS, and it performs good as well, but not as good as the 11x7.5 does. I have put the Evolution .46 up against two other Kadets that are set up identical to mine, one with a O.S. .46fx, and the other with a ThunderTigre, and the Evolution .46 on mine outperformed both of them hands down.

hey the EVO rocks, i think its the best especially for the price, my avistar out preforms a guy in the club who has a centaur with the OS .46 FX on it.

minn wich engine did you do the review on was it the trainer or the .46 size ? i have the trainer engine ahd from what i hear its going to be a great engine. thanks all for the responses.

The one I am reviewing is the Evo Trainer Power System.

It is a 46 (.455) BB engine. The review should be coming out next week (I just need one more pic), and all I will say right now, is that it will be getting an excellent review.

Dont know about the flywheel on yours, but if you buy the actual Evo .46 by itself, and not the "Trainer System", it doesnt have a flywheel. Any spinner will fit. I am running a 2" Great Planes aluminum. I think you can take the flywheel off the other engine without any problems though. Basically all it does is allow the engine to idle slower (I think). :D

The engine comes with 2 thrust washers. One has the weighted hub, and the other is standard.

After trying the Trainer hub and prop, I switched to the standard hub, a Master Airscrew 11-7 and a Great Planes 2 1/2" spinner.
