Prop shaft question
 

Hi guys,
Iburned 15 tanks on my OS 46AX and noticed that the prop shaft has play in it..Not side to side but in and out. Enough play to where if I push it in and turn it by hand, it feels rough likeit's rubbing against somethingBut when in the normal seatedor pulled position it turns smoothe. Does that make sense?

Have you had it apart before? There's a washer that goes inside there that prevents that rubbing. Maybe yours got left out?

No I haven't hadit apartit's still a new engine. If I do will I void anything with OS?

There is a washer behind the thrust washer behind the prop - if it came off when changing a prop the washer/spacer could fall off. Another thing could be the crankshaft rubbing the back plate due to bump starting (spinning the starter then bumping the spinner).

delman, I have the prop,thrustwasherandother washeroff the engine to where it's only the shaft sticking out. I never used an electric starter on itjust a chicken stick.
But if it's normal cool I won't worry about it unless I start hearing knocking or something. Just seems not normal..lol

+1 they usually have a little play dont worry about it
remember then the prop is spinning it will pull the shaft forward so their wont be play

Did you notice that before, or after you took off the prop &amp; hub?. Without the prop &amp; drive hub etc on there, the crank may be sliding back &amp; contacting the back cover. Try putting the prop &amp; hub &amp; washer etc back on &amp; snug it up &amp; see if it still rubs. Make sure you have that little thrust washer that goes on first <u>behind</u> the drive hub. A bearing engine shouldn't have alot of endplay or rub on back cover plate once the prop is tightened.

All ball bearing engines should have slight axial play (0,1-0,3mm).

Agreed, that was in essence my point, it should be a slight amount. When the prop is tight, the inner race of front bearing is sandwiched tight against the shoulder on the crank so any endplay on the crank is what ever play is in the bearing which should be slight.

If the prop was loosened, being that the ax doesn't use a collet on the drive hub, (just has a flatside on the crank), that would allow the crank to slide back &amp; rub against the back plate. That's why I was trying to find out if the original poster had the prop off when he noticed excessive play &amp; rubbing. If so, that would be normal.

If prop was tight &amp; crank was still rubbing on backplate, that would indicate perhaps the thrust washer is missing?

If number 9 has never been off, you shouldn't need to worry about number 10.

He clearly says it's been off. Anyway, the drive hub just slides off. Sure wouldn't hurt to check.

If it's never been off, then leave it alone. Taking it apart may lead to the OP losing the "#10" which, if I recall, is very thin small part.

Experienced people said it's normal. Leave it at that and fly the thing.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

He first said he didn't have it apart... So I'm going to assume, and we know what we do when we assume, That he first had the problem before he unassembled it. ... With the spacer, thrust washer, prop hub, prop, washerand prop nut installed and tight, There should oly be 0.1-0.3mm of end play in the crank. that small amount of travel would be bearly noticable if u pushed and pulled on the shaft. the other thing he said that it was rough when he pushed and turned the shaft. that would indicate to me only one problem, Since the parts are all there now.. when he put the prop on the first time (although he didn't remove any of the parts that go on before the prop) they moved off location and the spacer washer got lodged on the land of the flat that is ground into the crankshaft for the prop hub so he had more play in the crank than he should have had. ... good thing he didn't use a electric starter or real damage would have been done... u may have put some scrapes into the backplate but other than that you should be fine. just make sure that the spacer and thrust washer are seated on the bearing before u tighten things up in the future

What he's describing is normal when the props unbolted. At first I wasn't sure if he had the prop on or off. It'll be good to go once everythings bolted up tight.
