thinking of getting a plane
 

hi. im normally a car guy but im thinking of trying my hand at a plane. im just wondering what a good starter would be. my dad has a hobbico supercub and its a good plane, but i dont want to have the exact same plane as his especially because im probably gonna learn on his. what would be a good choice? im looking at hobby king and i have found a few but i want some opinions from people who have experience with planes. i would like something that i can start with stock but then could possibly upgrade as my skills improve.

for a beginner i would suggest something like this,.very durable and you can add flap/ailerons with some Modifications down the road,i started with the original HZ super-cub 5 years ago and i still have it,and have crashed into about everything lol

Do you want to stick with the foam electrics or are you looking to get into glow powered airplanes?

If you are wanting to stay with the RTF foamies then it sounds like you have a good trainer if your dad lets you use his Super Cub. You could always get your own but you might want to wait and purchase your own intermediate airplane. Some options might include:

I was reading your post, s7 and I agree with going for the Super Cub from Hobbyzone....that plane is almost indestructable. I have had mine for a couple of months and for what I've put it through, it should be in a recycle bin. It is, however still flying ..with a taped up cowl, missing spinner, rear fuse broken twice and bent servo rods. This plane is a lot like the eveready bunny....keeps going and going and........besides everything else, it's a reasonable price whether you go with BnF or RTF. Here's a couple of pics of mine after the last incident I had with gravity...

This was the first glow plane I bought, LOVEIT. I also have two 40 size trainers, and this one is MUCH easier to fly and to learn on. It has lots of power, which makes taking off much easier. The 40's are less powerful, and climb out much slower, meaning you have to put in more input / concentration when taking off. Plus, the 60 fly's better inverted, flies better in the wind (flew it today in the wind) and is a lot easier to see due to its size.

If your on a budget, its only $127 month for 3 months, comes ready to fly with a computer controller. Just my two cents... Scoot

The HZSC was my first plane also and could not believe how battered they can get and still fly. I have moved on to lots of other planes both electric and glow and ANY plane that is considered a trainer you should be alright with with your dads help. A flat bottom airfoil like the super cub is going to be easier to fly than a semi-symmetrical like the Hobby star or like my Avistar.

Either way GET A PLANE!!!

yeah i dont plan on getting a nitro. at least not now. college eats up most of my time and money. my dads supercub has been through hell as well. thats one thing i have always liked about it and the fact that parts are easily available at the lhs. can the supercub be modified at all? by modify i mean just a more powerfull motor and maybe a lipo battery with higher mah rating for longer runtimes.

Absolutely it can be modified. I had a E-flite Six Series In-runner in mine, I had to limit it to about 60% power though as that is all the airframe could handle. I have seen others that mount 480 Brush-less Outrunners also, either way its about 20x more powerfull than stock and will go verticle till its out of sight. A 1300 3S Lipo should fit in the stock battery box or a 2200 3S will fit inside the fuselage.

You can also add ailerons/flaperons and flatten the wing which will take the self correctivness out of the plane and make it fly like a "real" plane. This would be a good next step as it is then a true 4 channel plane and will fly like one.

Now that I am back on my home computer here are some pics of my old HZSC.

Brushless Inrunner, Ailerons and Clipped wings.....I miss that plane, such a relaxing fun flyer.

Note: The swastikas are extra from a FW190 that I built, I am not a Nazi :D

wow those are some cool setups. what kind of speeds and runtimes do you get out of those motor/battery combinations?

I honestly dont remember, it has been well over a year since I retired her. I am guessing anywhere from 15-20 minutes depending on throttle and about 30-45 MPH and this is with only about 60% throttle as I had to limit it because of over-amping the ESC.

The good thing about brushless is the efficiency, yes they can suck a battery dry in no time but if you throttle back and fly around at the speeds a stock Super Cub flys at you would be up for almost a half hour no problem.

I just bought my first plane and I'm waiting for it to arrive in the mail but my father-in-law recommeded this p-51 mustang pts it comes with a simulator and the trainer cord to connect to another control incase you get in trouble. It also comes with a spektrum ds6i computer remote so you can program other planes into it and don't have to switch remotes. He also has another trainer and has flown a couple of my brother-in-laws planes and says this one is the most stable one he has flown and has had alot of fun with it. this site is also the only place i could find it that wasnt on back order as well.

Hay goran619, before you buy the Hanger 9 PTS P-51 read the thread in this same section titled "which Hanger 9 P-51 should I buy". There's a lot of good info in there you should take in.

Yea Larry I did read that post the only problem was it didn't come with the computer remote plus I couldn't find anywhere to buy one I read that it was no longer available

hey guys. just wanted to say thanks again for the help. i might just hold out til my dad gets a new plane and ill use his supercub. i was just gonna buy one but i think i might get an hpi baja 5b buggy instead.
