expo%

I`m very new to rc flying. Learning on a alpha 40 and using a spektrum Dx6i radio. I seem to fly better on low rate set at 50%. But the expo not sure about. I like NO expo the best but the instructor says keep playing with it and get use to it. What % is a good starting point?

Thanks Bill</p>

RE: expo%

I would not put exponential on an Alpha 40. As a drill to familiarize yourself with the feature on your radio you might try 30% just to see what it does.

It's really to "numb" very responsive models to small stick corrections. Has no real benefit on models with dihedral or sensible control surfaces.

While learning to fly I recommend to avoid using any expo at all in the radio. Learn to fly first before you start messing with such settings as expo.

I agree with Ken, IFthe plane is set up for reasonable controls mechanically. The expo softens the wild stick movements that new pilots makes, speaking from my own experience. It doesn't fix in the stick in the corner movement though as I found out. It just makes movements around the center softer. I use them. Each plane has a dual rate and expo set up to keep me happy. I still find my best landings are the ones that I kind of Freeze on the controls once I have my glide path set. Nothing more that a very slight nudge on any control Those are sweeter. When I revert to the sticks in the corner mode though. things go ugly. Expo helps but doesn't cure the newbie stick control. That is why Ken and others will suggest none. It forces a sharper learning curve on proper stick control.

RE: expo%

I only use it when a model feels twitchy in the middle. That said, I haven't found a trainer yet that felt twitchy. The only surface it might come in handy on is the elevator, but even then it's a luxury. Anyone should be able to fly a properly set up trainer without any expo just fine.
