To get started with new gear in a .40 glow powered trainer you will need approx 350-600

1. Plane engine Radio about 299-320 depending on combo and where purchased

2. Field equipment 50-100 (hand pump, hot shot, props, wrenches, fuel, assorted tools)

3. junior AMA Membership 15

4. Club dues 10-200

Electrics can be even more expensive because of the costs of batteries and the charger.

At 14 you might want to try a firebird XL BUT remember this plane doesn't fly they way more mainstream R/C planes fly nor is it controlled in the same manner.

Reason why I don't recommend these types of planes is because I believe that they create more frustration then fun however if you're dead set on getting a plane this one is one of the few that are in your price range.

If you are lucky you might be able to find a used trainer combo for that price. The price of a ready to fly trainer combo including radio is on average about $280 from Tower Hobbies. But even with those combos you still need stuff like extra props, fuel, a starter (optional), and a glo driver. I would say unless you can find a good used combo, either save up your money and buy a new combo or buy that firebird that was suggested.

I would'nt say there's no such thing as not gettin a plane for $50, but your odds would be the same as if you tried to teach yourself how to fly as well. One suggestion is to look for swap meets. I know of nice used LT40's going for $40. BUT that is the plane and the plane ONLY. As said earlier, Radio, engine, props, fuel, starter, field box, yeah 350-500 range to get into it. Hope this is'nt discouraging to you, but those are the facts. :eek:

Like I said before it is not impossible that you could get a cheap trainer and radio for $150 but it would be pretty hard. I guess you could buy a trainer dirt cheap without the radio gear and the you could buy a cheap Futaba Skysport4 you can always find these radio fairly cheap used. Look around in the ads here and see what you can find, oh and I couldn't get your ebay link to work. Just be careful buying off of ebay as some things go for more than they are worth new. If you find something show the guys in here and I am sure they would be more than happy to tell you whether or not it is a good deal.

You can go to your local Hobby shop, and they will have, or can get a plane from the Firebird XL people that comes with EVERYTHING for 49.99! I believe it's called the "Outlaw" for around the 89.99 range you can get a "firebird" or at 109.99 Firebird XL.
Or..... a "Sky Scooter Pro 2" 159.99- comes with EVERYTHING- IT'S A REALLY GOOD PLANE FOR A FIRST ELECTRIC.

I've seen a number of people who have started with the Firebird XL, and they sem to like them okay. (Someone here on EZone says the Aerobird is quite a bit better, but I've never flown any of them.)

These small electrics will let you fly, but they do not have the power or aerobatic capabilities of glow powered aircraft. From everything I've seen and read, if you enjoy the hobby, you will be looking for bigger, more powerful stuff soon. And that WILL cost money. :(

Maybe you should look for a paper route, or mow lawns or something to fund this adventure.

Dan, stay away from e-bay, if you don't know a lot about R/C planes, you'll end up with someone elses problems, and you won't be happy at all.

I don't know about a "real" R/C model for 50 bucks, but let's try to encourage him.
I would have been flying years earlier if I hadn't listed to the LHS owner, " Oh, I can get 'ya flyin' for around 4-500 dollars."
I built my first model and taught myself to fly for 118.00! Of course that was with a two channel radio, glider, and a Cox engine. I learned building, REPAIR, and flying, and eventually wore it out (permanently) not in a crash, but from so many flights it just got really weak, and folded up in a loop.
With a little research, and imagination, you can do it.
Don't give up Dan! (or anyone else concidering "going it alone")

You can always get an air hog from Walmart for under $50 and save yourself the trouble. If you don't want to spend the money and get into a club and learn the hobby right, don't start it at all. It will cost you more in the long run and you won't stick with it.
