Hello =) - Optic 6 Help with programming Flaps

Hello everyone!<div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); padding-top: 5px; padding-right: 5px; padding-bottom: 5px; padding-left: 5px; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; ">
Firstly, I would just like to say how AWESOME this hobby is, and how AWESOME rc universe is =)

I've been interested in this hobby since i was little, but never could "afford" to get involved if you know what i mean, when i had some spare time, I'd try to learn about it and wow theres heaps to learn.. but NOW, i'm really involved and i love it!

And I'm a bit of a noob so please bare with me.

I Currently own a 140 scale Yak 54 (never flown), I've installedpush rods and all the little bits and pieces, all i need for it are some decent servo's and a motor. I've also built this really old slope soarer from a scratch build kit which was given to me when i was like 6? I also built a foamy park flyer (RIP) that was awesome for about 5 mins, until i crashed it, repaired it and painted it with a paint that wassupposeto be foam safe, according to this women at Bunnings.. But I have a problem with my newest model.

I purchased the Pheonix by Esport a few weeks ago, and its a great plane to start off with, people said to go the very basic trainer for starters, but i figured becauseI'vebeen practicing (hours everyday onReal flightG4.5) I'd step it up a notch..So I went for the pheonix, after flying it about 7 - 8 times I started to get abit bored with it, so I decided to switch from the 2.4Ghz transmitter that came with it to my FM Optic 6 and wow there's a massivedifferencein response times.

Everything went smoothly until I launched it, I was on fullthrottle and it pitched up, stalled then crashed. the damage was repairable tho it now looks abit.. bent! I'm pretty sure I forgot to balance it before launching because I did add a bigger motor and smaller battery and because the motor is behind the CG it makes a big impact overall, lesson learned I guess..

ANYWAY, I've since added flaps to the pheonix, controlledbyseparateservo's, the ailerons are also controlled byseparateservo's but are connected via a Y cable.. My problem is setting the whole thing up.. Here's my setup:

CH1: Right flap
CH2: Elevator
CH3: Motor
CH4: Rudder

CH5: Ailerons
CH6: Left Flap<br type="_moz" />

I have flaperon ON, so the flaps are also ailerons, but I want to figure out how I can have the ailerons and flaps seperate.. I figured I'd be able to use to Y cables to control the ailerons and flaps and make them flaperons, but that kindadefeatsthe purpose, and If I were to set it up like that, the flaperons are on the wrong stick, as I'm use to having the ailerons on the left stick and the rudder on the right, Is that normal??? I dunno.. maybe i'm just weird.

Almost every personI'vemet has been very secretive of RC planes and what go's into setting them up, I dunno why, but i've always found it difficult to find help, hence whyI'vefinally joined this awesome site..to mingle with like minded peeps! So thanks in advance to anyone who's willing to give up some time to help out an enthusiastic noob like myself! lol. =)
So, anyone have any ideas??<br type="_moz" /></div>

I Should probably add that I've tried figuring it out through the optic 6 manual, and searching for similar posts in the forums. I couldn't find anything but if anyone noes of similar posts, or links that might help me find a solution to this problem then It would be greatly appreciated.

OK, I may have found a solution.. After not getting any response from anyone in this thread, I spent a couple more hours looking for a solution, and came across a post on rc groups, I'm sure I can figure it out with the help of this post. Check it out, I hope this helps anyone in a similar situation.

Hi Spina,

I also have an Optic 6 so I'll try to help out. the fact that your rudder and aileron is mixed up is because the servos are plugged into the wrong slots in the reciever. AFAIK,
Channel 1=Aileron
Channel 2=elevator
channel 3=throttle
channel 4=rudder
channel 5=gear/aux
channel 6=flaps

Of course this all depends on which mode you fly. However, your monual should have everything you need to set up flaps. You will need a Y-lead for your flaps and a reversing Y for your Ailerons.

Hope this helps a bit if not, give us a shout.

Hi Tipstall,

I will try this asap. I havn't flown in about a week and I need my fix!! It's driving me nuts, I was getting so frustrated the thought of giving up just started to wonder in my mind.. But now I'm REALLY enthusiastic again and I cant wait to start designing my own planes.. eventually.

So thanks for replying. It seriously made my day, =)

Spina,

I am happy to help. If you have any more issues, Ill dig up my manual and see what I can do. I enjoy my Optic even though most people here fly the popular brands and like to burn Hitec.

Good luck and keep us informed,

Regards

RE: Hello =) - Optic 6 Help with programming Flaps

This is the first chance I've had to read this thread. First of all, I wish to welcome you to the wonderful hobby of RC Flight.

No one, so far, has asked you the big question.. is this your first plane? Are you new to this hobby?

If you answer YES to either of these questions, then you really should put aside that YAK and go with a basic trainer to get started. What you have been working with prior to the YAK is in no way sufficient to get you started in this hobby.

If I may, I suggest that you find yourself a decent trainer (look in this thread and pick any of the ones in this list)

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4537845/tm.htm

Then, find yourself someone that is experienced in training you for RC Flight, and work closely with that person. Otherwise, you will most likely gain experience in how to destroy the planes you have chosen to learn with. The YAK is not, in any way, a trainer aircraft. You really need to work with a trainer and an instructor to get you on your way to learning to fly RC. And, after you have "mastered" your trainer, you can move up to a low wing trainer, learn to fly that, and master that, and then, possibly, get up to learning to fly that YAK you have.

All this information is offered to you because we all know how difficult it is to learn to fly RC and that learning in to fly comes in steps. You cannot learn to fly with a plane that is way beyond your capabilities.

Good luck.

CGRetired.

RE: Hello =) - Optic 6 Help with programming Flaps

Spina,
The way I understand your setup you have 2 servos for the ailerons, and 2 servos for the flaps. A total of 4 servos for the wing. In that case the easiest way to get this working is:

Plug a “Y” into channel #1, plug each aileron servo into one end of the “Y” You don’t need a reversing “Y” if you set up your servo control arms correctly; with each arm pointing toward the wingtips or toward the fuselage. Set up this way one will push and one will pull.

elevator to channel #2.
motor or esc to channel #3
rudder to channel #4
leave channel 5 empty

Set up channel #6 the same as channel #1 BUT! Huge but here. Set up the flap servo control arms so they both point in the same direction, either right or left, because unlike the ailerons(one goes up the other down) you want the flaps to both go up or both go down. The flap switch will turn flaps on or off and the rotary knob will control deflection.

Rudder will be on the left stick, but that is normal Mode 2.

There are other ways to set this up using channel #5 for one of the ailerons and using aileron differential to mix the channels or plugging one of the flap servos into channel #5 and using some other mix ( I don’t remember which one), but the setup above is the easiest way to get it working.

Spina,
If you have to have rudder on the right stick and aileron on the left stick just switch the plugs to the channel you want it to function on. Plug the aileron "Y" into channel #4 and plug the rudder servo into channel #1. Since you are not using any mixes everything will work the way you want. Aielron left stick rudder right stick.

@SBOT

Thanks, I wish I had known about installing the servo's in one direction before I had already milled out the slots. But I'm glad I&rsquo;ve gone down this path because I really had no idea about the reversed Y cable and how to set all this up, I also wanted to make the ailerons into flaperons at one stage..

I ended up getting it all working and went flying Saturday after picking up my NEW 2.4Ghz Module for the optichttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif <![if gte vml 1]></span></span><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="" times="" new="" roman="" serif=""><v:shape id="Picture_x0020_1" o:spid="_x0000_i1027" type="#_x0000_t75" alt="http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/teeth_smile.gif" style="width: 14.25pt; height: 14.25pt; visibility: visible;"><v:imagedata src="file:///C:%5CUsers%5CDaniels%5CAppData%5CLocal%5CTemp%5C28 %5Cmsohtmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_image001.gif" o:title="teeth_smile"></v:imagedata></v:shape><span style="font-size: small;"><![endif]><![if !vml]><![endif]>.. I had some close calls because the wind picked up just after I launched and a cold front moved it.. Wind speeds (according to the radar) were up around 33 - 40 kph, and shish she was a hand full, I freaked out for a minute there, because it was like it just came from nowhere. Man these small scale planes (if they are?? I don't understand the scale??) really get knocked around.. No crashes tho, and the flaps work really well, I can't really judge it's handling considering it was windy that day, and I was really busy keeping her up there, she glides really well especially with some head wind but has a tendency of pitching up when flaps are deployed. I think some mixing is involved, I'll probably add more throw on the elevator too.

@CGRetired

Thanks for the welcome. <![if gte vml 1]></span><span style="font-size: small;"><![endif]><![if !vml]><![endif]>

The Phoenix is my 1st plane I&rsquo;ve flown with apart from the park flyer I built, and I&rsquo;m fairly new to this hobby, although I've been learning about it for years.

I fully agree with you about my Yak 54. It's basically a Goal I've set myself to help me master my flying skills quicker, it's the 1st real plane I&rsquo;ve bought, I don&rsquo;t consider foamies "real" planes lol.. I no there&rsquo;s a lot to learn about this hobby but until I'm at that level of flying I'm just gonna have my Yak sit there staring at me.. I've found it helps me learn things faster.

TheARF Phoenix Esport I purchased about a month ago is the plane I'm learning with, I could probably say I've almost mastered it. I couldn't picture flying without ailerons like some basic trainers, so according to the guy at the hobby shop, the phoenix was the next step up. Even tho it's a sports model and not an overhead wing.

As for my experience I fly almost everyday, in the mornings before work, then after work. And when I can't fly or before I could, I'd practice everyday on Real Flight G4.5.

I'm planning on signing up with a club near me, and gaining experience through the members like you said, and considering that I know bugger all people here in QLD it's probably a good way to meet people too.

Just a few questions (I could come up with thousands)

1. I'm thinking of getting the Aurora 9, has anyone used it? And how does it stack up to the other top brands like the DXi?

2. How do I go about getting bigger/smaller motors for my aircraft, say if I wanted a larger motor in my phoenix, would that mean I'd need a bigger LiPo, or higher voltage/mA? Bigger ESC??
Basically all I understand about electric motors is, the larger the gauge wire with less turns, the more torque? And the smaller gauge with more turns, the more rpm/speed?http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...n/confused.gif <![if gte vml 1]></span></span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span times="" new="" roman="" serif=""><![endif]><![if !vml]><![endif]>This is really confusing but I think it's something like that...

3. I'd really like to get into building my own planes but I'm not sure where to start, does anyone have any advice?

4. I've ordered some retracts for my phoenix, is there anything I should know before attempting to install them?

Thanks for all the help guys
