Next Plane
 

I have 2 trainers I've been flying for about 1 yr ,I'm ready for my next plane but not sure what to get. I'm thinking a low wing or a Bi-Plane.
Something that flys fairly stable but can do some aerobatics. I like the Electric PT-17 but not sure how easy it is to fly.
I'm flying from a private grass runway thats about 200'-250' long so a fast landing plane will eat it up quick.
I have 2 O.S 46's and 1 O.S 65 and servos I can take from the trainers for the next plane if possible.
Any suggestions

Any good low-wing sport plane would do well. I'd save the bipe for your next airplane. Take a look at some of the "intermediate" airplanes on this list:http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4537845/tm.htm

Another option might be some sort of fun-fly plane with a large thick-wing. They can be a little wild with full throws but I imagine you'd do fine if you keep the throws tame for a while. They'll fly slow and don't need a lot of runway.<br type="_moz" />

You won't go wrong here. Assembly is quick and No Modifications are needed for a great flying plane.

i second the escapade. its my second plane and its awsome. super stable and capable of insane aerobatics all in one package. also pretty quick wiht a os 46 as

There are quite a few planes that you could use, although most folks recommend the Four Star, Pulse Xt, Escapade, and even the Twist or similar models for a second plane. Often it really depends on your skill level. One of the guys at our field has a 60 size four star and the thing comes in like a trainer just gentle and relaxes down on the runway with ease.

The Pulse XT 40 was my second plane (both Revolvers as my 3rd and 4th planes) and it is a gentle baby to fly or you can max it out and scream it and yet some even have trouble flying that type of plane as a second plane. I upgraded the engine to an OS 55 AX and I simply have the grandest time with this plane. I can take off in less than 25' and land it in such a small area since I have been flying it for some time now, but I am very used to it now and it is a tad overpowered.

If you have been flying two trainers for a year and are reasonably proficient you should be fine with most decent low wings or even some of the top wing acro-type planes could be a great second plane. There is a guy at our field that has a Twist and that thing flies like a trainer yet will go completely wild if he so chooses to fly it that way. The thing almost can land with no airspeed!

I don't think anyone at our field has a PT-17 so I just cannot comment on it. Again it really depends much on your skill level. If you are going to use a 46 and it is an AX engine then the Escapade might be a good choice because it is a bit smaller than the Pulse and the 46 will haul freight on it. [8D]

I go along with the Escapade, I have one with an OS 46AX and it flies great. You do have to keep your landing speed up in my experience they hve to land a little hot.

Escapade would be a great choice. Might like at building a four star 60, it's more fun than you think. Or, you tube some videos of some Ultra Stick 60's. Super 2nd plane, fly it with an AX75. They land like their on auto pilot, and fly great in the wind. That's my 2 cents lol

roo man really? mine glides in beautifully. I usually have to chop throttle to idle before my final turn for approach to slow down to a nice easy landing.

It's probably just me, I have had problems geting it to slow down so I always land a little hot.

Your trainers are tricycle landing gear right?

Are you comfortable landing a tail dragger? if yes, then I'd vote for the Great Planes Escapade or a one of the Uly Stik Variants on the market.
Hanger 9Pulse also flies well but I don't like the price vs quality of construction. Just my POV, others will differ here. Black Horse Blade is also superb. Lovely little ARF that just needs a few runs of cold glue ver the joints inthe wing box, assembly and you're ready to fly.

If you are no comfortable with a tail dragger, then a Phoenix Models Tiger 2 or 3 is superb or one of the Black Horse tricycle gear planes like the Travel Air.


Any constant chors, semi symmettrical wing ARF with longish tail moment will be great. Bi-planes tend to have short tail moment which makes them a handful in the landing pattern, steer clear for now

The trainers are Tricycle gear, a taildragger doesn't bother me, I flew a twist once and at the time ( no exspierience) it was a handfull but I did take off and land ok.

Sig. The Four Star is one of the easiest kits to build, and EVERYONE I know that has build a "kit", has built one. Very popular kit. I have one about half built, I'm finding it to be an extremely entertaining, rewarding and relaxing. Building one is just a thought.
