DX7 Toasted itself!!!!!
 

My DX7 mother board fried itself last night. I was charging the battery. the stock 1500 8 cell NiMh with my onyx 230 charger. about 8 min into the charge there was smoke. I unplugged it, checked the battery, battery looked fine. then noticed burn marks on the back case near the green bind light. will be calling spektrum today. I have no idea what happened, Left a nasty burn mark on my shop floor that will have to be repaired. Good thing I didn't decide to go outside and mow the grass or something. I have charged this battery in the DX7 at least 30 times with no issues.

Reads like the charger may have went haywire on you, but you would think the protection built into the radio would have kicked in. That is a total bummer. That is the one thing about electronics, sometimes when they go, they really go. Hopefully Spektrum can get you going quickly.

Yes they run on blue smoke,when that escapes they don't work anymore.

Well, it is with much embarrassment that I post what I found out. I brought the DX7 and charger with me to work. After looking at the charger harness. Which is the Jr harness that allows you to connect to practically any kind of battery, I discovered that I had left a 150 MaH liPo plugged into the harness (from flying last Sunday). I recharged the tx battery, plugged the back of the DX7 off and checked the system fuse, it was blown. Replaced the fuse and it is working fine. Thank God for fuses. So the Lipo is what caused the black marks, its was completely toasted as well as the carpet in the basement!. The fuse in the DX7 is a 3 amp 250 volt fuse. All I had at work is a 2 amp 250. Will stop on the way home a get the correct one. Now I just have to figure out a way to repair the carpet in the basement shop before the misses sees it!! She will blow a fuse!!:D.Anyway, lot to be said for never charging batteries unattended. I will most certainly double check the harness from now on (d@#n tiny batteries). Anyway, Tx is working fine now, and another lesson learned.

Where you charging both the nMh and the 150 mA Lipo
at the same time ? Or did you not change the chargers
battery settings ?

mistakingly charged both at the same time. Charger was set for the 1500 Mah NiMh and the LiPo 150 MaH was still attached to the charger harness. Just didn't notice that the tiny 150 was sitll attached. Charger was seeing the 1500 not the 150 and therefore way over charged the 150 causing a global thermal nuclear meltdown of the 150. :D

 Good that you found the cause and that the damage was not worse that what it was. As for the carpet in the basement, sounds like it's time for a new coffee table or something else to set on the burn spot so nobody sees it!!!!  ;-)

nah will cut a piece out of the back area of a closet and get some good seam glue and go for it. Should be alright as along as I get the nap going in the right direction. It certainly could have been worse.

Well, pretty easy considering the at 150 Mah lipo is a extremely small battery that is used for micro's. The harness I use for charging has about 14 different wires with different size connectors to accommadate practically any RC battery used today. When I was flying last sunday I had charged the 150mah at the field, but never used it. I decided at the field just to leave it attached for the ride home. Anyway, forgot all about leaving it attached and when I hooked up to charge the tx, the 150 was simply buried under all the harness wires and I just didn't see it. Had it been a 300, 600 or 800 I would've noticed it for sure. I do not expect to win "RC battery charger of the year" for this incident and I could've as well saved my self the embarrassment and not posted any info. But feel that mistakes are just as important as no mistakes. I'm sure everyone that has read these post will double check (including me:D) before they charge their batteries next time. Hey Gorish, been wondering where you've been. I got mine at the LHS, but you can get them online. A main hobbies has them and some other places. they are @ 20.00

I have one from hobby king but it only has 6 pig tails on it. have to check with A main hobby. been flying alot and getting ready to go to a float fly tomorrow. Hope I don't end up with a submarine with wings.
