What diameter

replacing the rudder CA hinges on my giant scale PT 19. They are just old. I was rolling into the shop a couple of weeks ago and the rudder just came off. Glad it happened there instead of in the air. Anyway, I want to put robart hinge pins in place of the CA hinges. They come in different sizes, what diameter of hinge pin should I get for this plane? To be safe I'm going to replace all the control surface hinges with the Robarts.

Thanks

I use robarts all the time. In most cases I use the 1/8" unless the control surfaces are quite thick. Make sure you put some oil or vasoline on the knuckle. I also use Pacer hinge glue but I know lots of people that use the gorilla expanding glue. I just don't like the mess. BTY I have never had a hinge fail using the hinge glue. Also, water clean up. When I install the hinges I take a 1/4" dowel and wrap a piece of sandpaper around it and then I sand a small circular slot where the hinge is going to go. That will allow the knuckle to fit into the slot so that you have a very small gap on your hinge line. Just my 2c

You can also use titebond glue. I used it when hinging my Funana x100 and it holds very well.

If your hinge line is beveled, use a Brad Point drill bit. It will help you when centering the holes. The tip on the bit keeps it from walking.

Use the 3/16" diameter hinges and be sure to buy the drill guide

Thanks. I bought the 50 pack of the 1/8 robarts, came with the drill guide, used it on cub last night for the elevator, works well and not the mess that I usually make with the CA. will get a bag of the 3/16 for the PT 19

Hey Minnflyer-I don't have those nice slides. I have to explain it the old fashion way,,,,I earn it,,, Ooops, I think that was an ad for Smith and Barney?????? or some financial institution. Wasn't sure on the 1//8" or the 3/16" didn't know how thick the leading and trailing edge was on that plane.

Well, he said "Giant Scale". I use 3/16" on anything larger than 1/4" wood

bill,,,where Minnflyer shows the chamfer is where I use the dowel and sandpaper to achieve the same results.

It was understood Gene. My question to you is where are you getting the Pacer from?? I'm almost out and I really like the stuff. I use the tite bond too. Gorilla if I have wobbled out the holes from test fitting.
